Nintendo respond to Robin Williams tribute petition

If you’ve just stepped out of some week-long slumber, you may have missed the news that sadly, Robin Williams passed away last week. A petition has since gone up to have the actor immortalised as an NPC in the next Legend of Zelda game

One thing I never knew about him before his death, is that he was an avid gamer. In fact, his daughter’s name is Zelda, taken right from the well known Nintendo series itself. They have both worked on promoting the series in the past.

An Australian fellow called Nick Schaedel has put together a petition to have the actor immortalised in the series he loved, in some form or other. Signature wise, it currently sits at over 108 000. Schaedel included the following on the petition:

If Nintendo does do this, it would be an unexpected but wonderful outcome. If Nintendo takes some other action or even just posts a statement … that is also a wonderful outcome. If Nintendo doesn’t do anything, then this petition simply stands as a reflection of a lesser-known way that Mr Williams touched the lives of many people. That’s fine too.

Nintendo have actually noticed the petition, and have since commented (via Polygon)

Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo. Our hearts go out to his entire family, and especially to Zelda Williams who we’ve worked with multiple times. We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community, and hear the request of fans to honor him in a future game. We will not be discussing what might be possible for future games during this difficult time, but we will hold our memories of Robin close.

They haven’t necessary said no. I think it would be silly of them to not pay homage to the actor who not only played their games, but helped to promote it.

This sort of thing isn’t new. Gearbox for example included a NPC of Michael Mamaril in Borderlands 2. He was a cancer victim who loved the series dearly, and he received his own memorial as a living digital character who gives the Vault Hunter loot whenever he is found. I’m sure Nintendo can, and will (hopefully) do something just as awesome.

  1. I think the timing is a bit off. I don’t think it would be proper to announce something so soon after his passing, but there’s nothing wrong with immortalizing Robin in the future.

Dont do this now….Seriously, he just passed away. Its also unfair pressure to put on Ninty as well. Now is not the time to push these things. But I do understand it is coming from a good place

Yeah true. I just think gamers/fans should just let it be for now. Its a really nice gesture but ya know, they cant expect anything from ninty. I’m glad they did respond to say they cant confirm that it will never happen

I thought it was a fitting reference, since he passed on. Plus I loved the visual imagery in that movie.
I guess the fans won’t relate Robin Williams to drama, just comedy.

“Thank you for every kindness. Thank you for our children. For the first
time I saw them. Thank you for being someone I was always proud to be
with. For your guts, for your sweetness. For how you always looked, for
how I always wanted to touch you. God, you were my life. I apologize for

It’s not a cowards way out. Its the brain giving him no option. Suicide is just a means to an end. Please educate yourself on the matter, for you can some day or someone close to you could suffer from depression and may try to end their lives. Not because they would want to when they are healthy, but because they can’t rationalise it any other way when they have the condition.

Actually it is, it’s the means to end severe, prolonged emotional distress that the person sees no escape from. Whether any of us agree with their choice or not is irrelevant to them.

            August 19, 2014 at 10:34

Travis your case of ” rather try and turn your life around” does not apply in this case. He had quite a kick ass life if you don’t take into consideration the depression but we can’t. He was severly depressed and as said in earlier replies, he did not see another solution. As for your beliefs, which I am assuming are christian beliefs, they are based on a book that was written many years ago and no one can confirm or deny the part that says that people go to hell if they commit suicide. This man was an inspiration to so many of us so lets give him the respect he deserves and let him rest in peace.

I do feel sorry for him and his family and friends etc. Depression is a serious condition, and i do know from experience. I dont however think that you have no option if things get really bad to kill yourself, but it looks like we will just have to disagree on that. August 19, 2014 at 12:21

*sigh* yes I read it, and that shows you don’t know what you are talking about. there is more than one type of depression, Robin Williams was never diagnosed but based on what has been said it was bi polar depression which is chemical. You don’t over come chemical depression you learn to managed it. even with pills and a psychology it can still be very difficult and depending on how bad it gets people some times never learn to deal with it. chemical depression means a chemical imbalance in the brain, it’s not something you get over. this is why I know you have no clue what you are talking about. seriously at 40 you’d think you would have had time to learn something…. seems you never too old to learn pity some people are incapable.

          • Travis

            August 19, 2014 at 12:27

Again you should think before you comment. My wife if you must know has shizophrenia, which is similar to bi-polar (and has nothing to do with split personality as most people think when they hear about schizophrenia). Chemicals in your brain can cause you to be very depressed, but they dont cause you to put a noose around your neck and hang yourself. Fighting to live is a better option, and yes I do believe in hell which seems to very unpopular on this forum, but even if you dont believe in it you can at least respect that I do and I dont want to people to suffer for eternity.

          • Kyle Logan

            August 19, 2014 at 12:50

and no I don’t respect that you believe in hell, I will never respect stupidity. and all religion is stupid and show very basic lack of ability to read and comprehend simple science, but that’s another topic. I agree with the rest, the conversation is pointless.

            August 19, 2014 at 12:52

            August 19, 2014 at 13:11

Yes lol looks it. They are obviously not the same, but the symptoms are similar, similar and overlapping drugs used to treat both conditions. And people from shizoprenia do not suffer neccessarily from both hallucinations and delusions, they can only have 1 of these, and its not all the time. When they do suffer from those symptoms its called a psychotic episode, otherwise they can still lead happy and healthy lives.

was going to ignore nut this was too easy to pass up:

            Schizophrenia
a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behaviour, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.

Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) causes serious shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior—from the highs of mania on one extreme, to the lows of depression on the other. More than just a fleeting good or bad mood, the cycles of bipolar disorder last for days, weeks, or months. And unlike ordinary mood swings, the mood changes of bipolar disorder are so intense that they interfere with your ability to function.

I have a very strong backround in psychology and truma assistance. better luck next time

            August 19, 2014 at 13:21

Oh you have got to be kidding. I have spoken to physciatrists who say its very difficult to tell the differences, as the symptoms are the same. You dont think a breakdown between emotion and behavior also causes your emotions to go manic and depresses, because they definitively do. Even the drugs used to treat both illnesses overlap as they both cause depression.

For example my wife takes abilify (she has schizoprenia). The same drug is used to treat bi-polar disorder.

I think its you that needs better luck next time

do you know how many drugs there are out their for depression, do you know how many other treatments they are used for. including weight loss and to stop u from smoking. really, you don’t have a clue about this and it shows…. this is why I don’t like talking to people, they never one the same level and it’s so frustrating trying get down to their level.

You claim to know so much about science, but dont even agree that shizophrenia and bi-polar are in the same family of mental disorders, that have similar symptoms, treatments, and both cause depression.

Sorry i am not on this extremely high level you seem to be on, careful not to fall off.

Don’t be an ass Kyle. You had a good argument, don’t fuck it up now with 12yr old rants like “no I don’t respect that you believe in hell”. Don’t knock religion. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, as you are to your own.

I know I got bored…. but I honestly have no respect left for religion. if you people want to believe fine… but don’t use it to justify or try defend any view point.

I’m agnostic, but still respect others religion. I do agree that one shouldn’t use religion to justify or try to defend any point of view though. That just pisses people off.

I’m atheist that makes my views better! joking, no real problem with religion. in fact I love it when they come round over the weekend, love watching them try work out science and how I know more than they do about their own religion, keeps me entertained. but don’t use your religious opinion to try attack others based on something you have no really clue on…. but that’s my humble opinion.

Yet again I’m agnostic, so I don’t have an religious opinion about anything.
But you are correct. Keep religion out of it.

What the hell is going on here. This is getting out of hand. What one man decides to do with his own damn life has nothing to do with any body else.
