Nintendo’s profits down $1.3 Billion

You must have noticed over the past few months that the Nintendo Wii has been receiving less and less (good) media attention and that virtually all the focus has moved to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PS Vita.

This is basically because the Wii is at the end of its lifespan now and there just aren’t that many new good titles coming out for it. Granted it’s going to receive and awesome last hurrah with the next Zelda title but after that it’s looking a bit bleak.

It’s not just the media that isn’t focussing on the Wii anymore, sales of the Wii have plummeted recently and along with that so have Nintendo’s profits. In fact Nintendo’s profits have dropped and eye watering $1.3 Billion.

Though to be fair it’s not all due to poor sales, we here in South Africa love to complain about our foreign exchange rate no matter which way it goes but spare a thought for Nintendo who have lost $526 million in profit simply because the Yen is currently over valued. That’s half a billion dollars thanks to a crummy exchange rate.

But that still leaves another $800 million in profits that have been lost and with it’s full profits only (snort) being $460 million you can see the writing’s on the wall for the Wii.

Personally I really don’t see the Wii-U turning this around for Nintendo and hope they have something else incredible up their sleeves otherwise they are in for a bumpy ride in the next generation.
