No, Anonymous did not hack Xbox Live

Did you try signing in to Xbox Live this weekend? If you did, it’s quite likely that your attempts were futile – and you spent much of your time staring at spinning circles and error messages. Xbox Live was down for a a large portion of this weekend – and many, including me, thought it may have be a hack attack by anonymous, protesting the next-gen Xbox’s rumoured perpetual connectivity requirement.

According to the official Twitter account of the loose, decentralised hacktivists, the whole thing has nothing to do with them.

The issues have since largely been fixed, with Microsoft saying that

“If you were one of the members who was having issues signing in to Xbox LIVE, good news! This issue has been fixed! Thank you so much for your patience during this time, feel free to go enjoy your favourite games and content!”

However, not all is well. According to the Xbox Live Status page, Minecraft’s cloud-based saves are inaccessible.

Users may experience difficulties with the following services:

  • Creating new or accessing existing Minecraft game saves

Were you affected? did you have trouble signing in the vastly-superior-to-the-competition, paid-for Xbox Live this weekend?

OVG couldn’t access his account for a few minutes, just adding to the black label induced rage from the night before, but I had no issues.

lol I didn’t even think it was hacked.. Thought it was my international DNS that I am using… I guess this sucks for people (like me) who wants to use the Xbox for SkyGo, NetFlix, Hulu etc.. Without XLive we can’t use it..

First thing that came to my mind was: Sooo.. you guys still going to do that “always-on” DRM thingy? 😛

Sorry for messing with your favorite DDoS attackers… The moment they really hack something important, then they’ll get my credibility

Yet another reason why online cloud base is a bad idea for gaming. One hack and it all comes crashing back down.
