Explore No Man's Sky's 18 quintillion planets

No Man’s Sky is a massive, massive game. Massive in the sense of scale each of its thousands of galaxies have, with the entire game populated by over 18 quintillion planets from players globally to slowly chip away at. It’s so large that the odds of warping into another player are miniscule, which is why the first video in a new series of four trailers for the game showcases nothing by lonely exploration.

There’s nothing but you, your ship and a seemingly endless expanse ahead of you, and I must admit this has to be one of the most alluring features of Hello Games’ title for me (aside from reeling over how all of it is essentially created with mathematical algorithms). There’s just too much in No Man’s Sky to explore without getting incredibly lost, which is equal parts exciting and daunting. Thankfully all the planets we’ve seen (a drop in the ocean, almost literally) look to be beautifully varied, so you won’t be jumping from one soulless husk to another.

If you happen to be the first on a planet, you’ll get to name it whatever you like for other potential explorers to happen upon. The same goes for any flora and fauna on the surface, as well as mammals, fish and any sort of weird aliens you encounter on your journeys. A new planet immediately becomes yours in No Man’s Sky, ripe for exploration and exploitation if you so choose. Just keep an eye on those galactic watchers that don’t take kindly to players looking to just destroy some of the galaxy’s finest work.

Exploration is just one of the pillars of gameplay No Man’s Sky will offer, with upcoming videos aiming to tackle Trade, Combat and Survival. It’s likely that one of these four will end up being the hook that ultimately forces you to sink endless hours into the exploration title. It’s just as possible for none of them to resonate with you, which is kind of the hurdle this truly intriguing game will have to tackle head on when it launches on August 9th.

Remember to name a planet in a certain someone’s ‘honour’ if it is seventh from that system’s sun.

Or if it is the seventh moon

You know, despite not meeting the base graphic card requirements this is one I will probably still buy.

And yes, I will most definitely name a certain planet a certain name and maybe post pictures and the exact co-ordinates for our fellow Lagz brothers and sisters to visit.

The only thing I’m looking for to about NMS are the thousands of crying hipsters when they realise the game is boring AF….

I just don’t see how this is going to be any good at all

I like exploring stuff. I’ve been looking for a chilled exploration game like this for years. Probably almost a decade. So while some might think it’s boring to just explore, for no reason other than “hey that’s new”, others like me enjoy that.

Exactly! I’ve waited for a game that is endless. Something that has no boundaries or limitations, it’s you and a whole universe to do as you like.

I think it will have appeal to certain people, for sure.

I am, however, firmly in your corner with this.

I won’t hit the game just yet, but it’s been pretty obvious from the start that it wasn’t going to be a story-based in depth game about different cultures. It’s main focus is exploration, and if you as a child looked up at the sky (like I did) full of imagination and wondered about all the strange things that could be out there, regardless of how futile or characterless most of it might be, then you will look at this game differently.
I won’t buy it because I’m looking for a game that’s made the way games should be, I’ll get it because that kid in me would enjoy getting immersed in something that he’s always dreamed of being able to do, even if it’s not perfect.

After reading this yesterday, I don’t think it’s going to be as great as it’s hyped to be. :/ Probably my own fault for expecting too much.

Yes but planets are degenerated after you leave them. So no one can see what you built or mined. It says that in the article in my OP above.

Naming the planets can be dangerous. Wxpect to at least at some stage land on Jack’s Penis, or Your Mother.

yeah, that is going to be amusing to say the least. If the game proves very popular, articles will be written about the draconian measures in place to try prevent names like that.

Followed up by articles about how enough is not being done to protect our kids from rude names

First thing I’m doing when the game releases is:
Name myself star lord, search for a squirrel, groot tree, green alien chick and big blue guy to help me out and become a guardian of the galaxy I spawned in…….. Or just stay on a green lush planet and call it Endor.

My problem would be that I would probably go exploring and then never return to the galaxy I’m supposed to be guarding :/

Same here. Regardless of how many sci-fi movies have come out, few have captured that real open space with different planets and races like that movie did.

No Man’s Sky is going to be amazing.

But the best part IMO would be if they develop the tech further so that they can customise individual planets to create a narrative.

Imagine a Mass Effect style game with a full story, narrative and level design overlaid over an infinite universe.
