No Unreal Engine 4 until 2014

It’s easy to poke fun at Epic’s Unreal Engine 3. The prolific engine has given us extremely bulk, macho characters rendered with digital steroids, and has paved the way for a sea of “brown and grey” games to flood the market this generation. It’s just as easy to forget that it’s incredibly versatile, and is the magic that powers some of this generation’s best games; Gears of War, Arkham Asylum Mass Effect, Mirror’s Edge, Mortal Kombat, Borderlands and Zumba Fitness, to name but a handful.

In fact, it’s probably the single engine that largely defines this console generation – and it would be a lovely bit of conjecture to believe that Unreal Engine 4 would be tied to next-gen. So when’s it coming?

Not for quite a while, it seems. Speaking to IGN, Epic’s Tim Sweeny said that "this is technology that won’t see the light of day until probably around 2014". Not exactly concrete stuff, but it certainly ties in to what supposed “industry insiders” have said about the advent of next-gen. For the most part, developers seem happy with the current generation of consoles.  "I think it’s going to be a while still, I really do. I think consumers are happy with the current ones, there’s a lot you can do with them," Bethesda’s Todd Howard said to PS3M . "So I don’t think it’s coming next year or the year after."

I have to admit…I’m getting bored of this gen. It’s not just that PC games have started looking leagues beyond console counterparts, or hat that games themselves are getting tiresome. I think it’s mostly that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are so much at parity that the silly fanboy wars that kicked this generation off are pretty much over, and I’ve not giggled at some stupid fanboy rant in ages. I expect that to have changed by 2014.

What do you think? are we getting new consoles along with a new Unreal Engine in 2014? I suspect it’s a pretty safe bet.
