November NPD Hardware Stats – Surprise 3rd spot for Sony

Sony3rd

The much anticipated NPD sales figures are in and I am truly shocked at the hardware results.

These figures include Black Friday where all the stories were about how amazingly well the PS3 sold and how it trounced the Xbox 360 in all areas so I was expecting the PS3 to be pushing the Wii hard this month and possibly become the top selling console for the month.

However when all the excitement had died down and the actual figures were counted things were not as rosy for Sony.

Once again the Wii is the all dominant home console with it’s little sibling also burning through the sales charts.

  • Nintendo DS – 1,700,000
  • Wii – 1,260,000
  • Xbox 360 – 819,500
  • PlayStation 3 – 710,400
  • PSP – 293,900

The PSPGo has been an abject failure and Sony really need to get back to the drawing board with that one and release a model with a UMD drive attached.

But the big news for this post is that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by 109,100 units in November, while I still see the PS3 as great value for money I do think it is going to struggle to beat the 360 this silly season after these relatively poor results.

I really did think the PS3 was going to take it this month.

Microsoft sure know how to play a good game of poker(that poked ya right in the face). As for ps3 doing badly thats a hyperbole on yr part. They r in a better position from last year were they took a beating. Po po po poker yo face po po so poker yo face! Microsoft sure know how to play a good game of poker(that poked ya right in the face). As for ps3 doing badly thats a hyperbole on yr part. I don’t think anyone would argue that they are doing better… but I expected them to win in November and I am a notoriously bad loser 🙁

I was also completely taken by surprise…

for once vgchartz actually predicted sony to take the month and what do you know they got it wrong!

but always remember amazon and walmart aren’t counted by NPD. but still walmart had awesome x360 bundles, and from what the amazon sales/activity chart thingy said the ps3 was leading that – so probably cancel themselves out anyway.

Also remember wallmart and amazon had the one week in november where they sold the arcade at $200
with $100 giftcard, etc – I am sure they sold a lot more xbox 360 in that week as well.

Microsoft will most likely drop the price by $50 early in the new year to maximise profit this holiday season, They have a good install base and the console still sell well above expectations even with the rise of the PS3 Slim. But the real comparison will come end of january when we see the financials of both companies, and I predict that Sony will loose at least $500 Million
this quarter alone, with the introduction of the slim etc. The yen also took a dip the last few months so Sony will be bleeding, so the age old question is quantity vs profit, and I think Sony got it wrong, yes they are selling a lot of systems but at what price, Xbox software is still outselling ps3 software even though sony sell more systems wordwide that microsoft.

        Interesting times.

I’m not even sure the financials will help because sony bundles their gaming with other forms of entertainment don’t they?

from last year , they include the laptop range in the same section. But they make up a small portion of the whole.

            E.g. Laptops.
            PS3
            PS2
            PSP
            and other network devices.

I bet seeing the PS3 come third must have give fatlazyboy a huge erection.

What amazes me even more is how stupid and patriotic the yanks are, even for a piece of crap like the 360 (I know they crap, i had 2 myself). But then again theyve never been know for their deep intellect anyways.

South Africans, on the other hand, are much smarter, and this can be seen by the number of 360 owners ditching M$ and migrating to the PS3. I did as well about 6 months ago. Wish I did it sooner.

Once again MS has brought out great bundles this holiday season.

I think cheaper Blu-Ray players are hurting the PS3 sales.

You do realise you say “only” in the same sentence as the DS which sold 1.7 Million units?

Also the Wii’s decline is pretty much spot on when compared with previous generation consoles… so Nintendo aren’t crying.

      I mean they outsold the 360 by 400 000 units… but I’m just a Wii fanboy

There is a rumor of a Logitech releasing a UMD Addon drive for the PSP-Go.
I wonder if this is true, and maybe just maybe it’ll help that stupid thing keep afloat.

I sincerely doubt Sony will allow that. External umd readers would just blow the piracy door of its already squeaky hinges.

remember this is just USA. every where else the ps3 is pretty much killing it.

how ever much the ps3 is beaten in the US japan pretty much always evens that out. so that leaves Europe/Others – which seems to have the ps3 200-300k ahead monthly.

Yeah the PS3 is quite strong in Europe and I think it will probabaly maintain its thin lead over the 360 until Natal comes out. From the positive things I’ve heard from developers about Natal, it really could kick-start the 360’s sales again.

I highly doubt it, I in my opinion think the natal is a piece of crap to rape us even further of our money. People are gonna buy it for the novelty. and sell it again after a week.. mark my words

I wanna lay down and game not stand up and jump for joy , otherwise i would of gotten a wii

Lack of live support in South Africa and the shoddy (cheap) nature of the xbox 360 has seriously hurt Microsoft here (The E74 errors are merely repackaged RROD errors).

It would be safe to say, that the PS3 is now the console de jour. In other words, SONY has finally recaptured South Africa. I sincerely hope that MS can bounce back (in territories other than the US), purely because it keeps SONY on their toes.
