I hate Ubisoft’s Rabbids. I hate them nearly as much as I hate those bloody minions from Despicable Me that you now see everywhere. The fact is that they’re essentially the same thing (though Rabbids came first). They’re ungovernable, annoying little things that I’d love nothing more than to drop-kick straight in to the sun.
They got their start as a spinoff from Rayman; starring as the enemies in Rayman Raving Rabbids – a series of mini games tied together with some sort of silly story. It was mindlessly fun, and I have to admit to enjoying it a little. That was before they spun off in to their own, seemingly unending series of party games, mini game collections and otherwise terrible games. It became a whole transmedia franchise; spawning a kids’ TV series, books, cartoons, merchandising and everything in between – but the Rabbids popularity has waned a little. Instead, we’ve got the ubiquitous servbot/Rabbid hybrids – the Minions – everywhere.
It’s perhaps time for the Rabbids to come back and claim their spot in the sun. Or, if you’re cynically minded, Ubisoft’s furious about The Minions’ success and wants its slice of pie back; the Rabbids are getting a movie.
If you’re anything like me, this news would have had you rolling your eyes and suggesting some sort of aquatic endeavour, but there is something mildly intriguing about this new film adapatation of the annoying cretins; the film will be written by Matthew Senreich, Tom Sheppard and Zeb Wells – three of the people responsible for writing Robot Chicken. Like that series, the new Rabbids will blend live action and stop motion, and be likely be filled to the brim with puerile humour.
