It seems South African fans of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds are hungry for competition. Yesterday, Orena announced their first PUBG Battle For The Throne which offered 100 spots for aspiring Battle Royalers. Those spots filled up within 6 hours of opening, prompting Orena to offer a further 100 spots for those who couldn’t sign up fast enough.

Battle For the Throne is a fitting name for PUBG, and name Orena has been used since its inception to promote the competition in South Africa. The BFTT offered 100 spots at R50 each with a base prize pool of R1000. The prize pool will be crowd funded via entries which means it’s now going to grow with each person, noting that 100 slots have already been taken. Several weeks ago Bluehole and PlayerUnknow’s Battlegrounds announced that they would be offering their competitive platform to established hosts around the world, with Orena boasting the first partnership on African soil.

“Orena is once again paving the way for the future of local esports by obtaining the first official “CUSTOM MATCH” server partnership in the African region, as we did with Twitch.tv back in 2014. This allows us to host our own PUBG online server thanks to the awesome team at Bluehole.”

Registrations opened yesterday, and promptly closed ahead of the shut-off date, but as mentioned above a further 100 spots have been opened up and entries now close on the 16th of September. The tournament will kick off the 17th of September, and if you still want to sign up you can purchase a ticket over on Quicket.

The tournament will be solo play only, played in the Custom Match on European servers. Orena has also offered 15 seats to players who wish to play at their Orena Gaming Lounge situated in Emperor’s Palace, which are first come first serve. Four preliminary rounds will be played ending in one Grand Final Battle Royale match. The Grand Final will feature the top 50 scoring players from the preliminary rounds, and points will be determined via “kill points” and “round points” for each player. Points will be allocated as 1 point per position (coming first is 100 points, and so on) and each kill will get you 5 Kill Points. The prizes will be allocated as follows:

  • 1st Place: 60% of Prizepot + R150 “CHICKEN DINNER” Voucher
  • 2nd Place: 30% of Prizepot
  • 3rd Place: 10% of Prizepot

It would be incredible if Orena got KFC on board as partners, but maybe next time. If you’re serious about being a part of South Africa’s first PUBG tournament then sign up asap before the next 100 slots are filled.
