Overwatch will never charge for post-launch content

Blizzard is full of surprises. Earlier last month the acclaimed developers announced that their newest IP in over a decade, the class-based shooter Overwatch, wouldn’t in fact be free-to-play, like so many were suspecting. Instead it’s a full priced, multiplayer-only shooter, which had some sceptical given the state of the market of games right now. But Blizzard being Blizzard are doing things differently.

They aren’t segmenting the game’s community through trivial DLC bundles, and instead planning on giving all post-launch maps and characters away for free to anyone playing. This means that purchasing the game locks you into all its content forever, unless you really want that fancy costume for Widowmaker. That’ll cost you extra, but will make absolutely no difference to the way the game plays out.

Game Director Jeff Kaplan confirmed this roadmap in a new community video yesterday.

“We have ideas for additional maps and heroes that we’d like to add to the game. So we thought about this and decided the best way to add them to the game is to patch them in as free content and not as DLC. Hopefully that alleviates some concern that people’s have.”

It might sound like something that should be standard, but you’d be surprised by how many multiplayer-only titles choose to segment their players through DLC. Evolve, for example, sold additional hunters and monsters post-launch, while games like Battlefront feature season passes with maps and more requiring additional buy ins. Overwatch may be full priced, but at the very least you know you’re getting the complete, uncompromised version from the start.

And that’s really just going to ensure that people stick with the game. Overwatch is out on PC and consoles next year. The closed beta is also going offline for the holidays from the 10th of December.

Hmmmm. I just don’t know if I can trust anything said by developers anymore. Especially the shooter kind.

Titanfall – PVP only, Season Pass
Evolve – PVP only, Laughable DLC and Season Pass
Battlefront – PVP only, Extortion level Seaon Pass
Rainbow Six – PVP only, Season pass and MT
Overwatch – MT but for cosmetics only?

        Titanfall – Failure
Evolve – Dead before the first dlc came out
Battlefront and Rainbow Six – Too early to tell but seem to be on the same path
So its just good business sense . Who said gaming companies never learn ?

It says a lot about the industry when a publisher has to come out and try convince or reassure the public that their concerns are not warranted. That the product they are trying to sell wont nickel and dime the consumer.

I’ve resorted to whipping Darryn as well as Geoff to get it fixed, but all that I’m getting out of Darryn is screams of joy.

So I’ll have to reconsider my tactics.

But they are working on it, honest!
