PC gaming makes more money than consoles

PC gamers have been hearing about the death of Pc gaming for years. They’re also told, whenever there’s a shoddy port of a game on PC, or when a PC release is nixed that they’re a bunch of pirates and the real money’s on consoles. Only that may be a load of codswallop.

According to analysts at DFC Intelligence, PC gaming now earns more revenue than all of the consoles combined.

“On a global basis PC games have surpassed console games,” DFC Intelligence boss David Cole told PCR-Online in an interview.

“Among core gamers there is a heavy overlap with most console gamers also playing on a PC. The big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity. Just a few years ago the reverse was true. This means PCs have the broader audience."

Of course, this is a bit of a skewed statistic; a bit of a logical fallacy. The revenue isn’t generated by the AAA games space that consoles largely occupy. Mostly, the revenue in PC games comes from MOBAs and free-to-play titles.

"The MOBA games League of Legends and Dota 2 dominate everything else by an order of magnitude in terms of more usage than other products," added Cole. "In the first part of 2014 we saw some signs that may change with the introduction of new titles and some increased play of games outside the MOBA category.

"But MOBA is dominant. Beyond that it is a nice mix of MMO, strategy and first person shooter.

"We can say that our top 20 list for 2013 had no titles released that year and in Q1 2014 we saw three new titles crack the list: DayZ, Rust and Hearthstone.

Cole does, however, concede that the new consoles could change things. For one, they embrace free to play games, which the old ones didn’t.

For sure. But by the sounds of things it’s not going to be the same way round this time.

Everything I’ve read indicates devs wanting to move over to PS4 and Xbone because of simpler architecture and coding.

PC hardware isn’t really that expensive anymore. It’s much cheaper to upgrade my rig, that’s already better than the PS4, than to buy a PS4. BUT. That being said, there sure are some damn nice exclusives that I always feel I’m missing out on.

For sure. From scratch you are going to have to pay a bit. That’s if you need screen, keyboard, mouse, PSU etc.

But once you have the permanents in place then upgrading is pretty cheap

This happens every time new consoles get released. About a year or two before new consoles get released, gamers upgrade their PC’s to get games looking nice again. Then when the graphic card can’t handle the games at full settings anymore, you buy a console.

So now that consoles has basically become PC’s and PC’s becoming more like consoles, is it really going to be worth it, going back to consoles after seeing The Witcher 3 on PC.

Not so sure hey. I’ve never bought a console because my graphics on PC “don’t look nice anymore”

A graphics card at the price of a new console would be more than strong enough to handle the new games.

You also assume that every single PC gamer has to run games at full graphics. That is a fallacy. I’m happy for my graphics to run all the way down to medium before I even consider getting an upgrade.
One has to remember that what my card can run now it will run for its lifetime. So when I play on high now, in a few years time that high may become medium. But medium will still look like high does now when that time comes. So after years I haven’t lost any quality. In fact what is high now, will be medium in a few years and actually look better with optimisation in game code, DX handling etc. So my graphics also tend to go up over time even though my quality setting is technically going down. Yes there comes a point where the degradation really starts to kick in, but that’s only after 5 or 6 years where the tipping point goes in the wrong direction. With the new consoles they have mentioned already that the generational release will be every 6 or 7 years. So consoles vs PC is really coming to a point of much the same all round and is about personal choice and preference.

Another point I’d like to point out is that hardware sales are down but game sales are up… This also indicates that most PC gamers run with their current rigs for years and don’t upgrade as often as everyone tends to think they do.

i think games are up and hardware is down , because pc games havent realy been pushing the grphics , ie last true pc gamer centric game was crysis 1 ? with the new consules doing well , woulnt bee surprised if hardware sales go up next year due to the standard of games be developed for ps4 and its 5gig DDR5 Ram

also i expect my pc rig to actually start working next year some time as more games get focused on the new systems – at the moment my RIG is just to OP for the standard of games comming out

Heh. WIsh I could say my PC hasbn’t broken a sweat yeat. I can feel the effects already with some new games but I have no doubt that for the next 2 years still my PC will be able to handle most new games on medium – high even though it’s almost 3 years old. 5 years is a good lifespan for a PC that has had no upgrades made to it in those 5 years. after that time I’d search out another 560Ti and SLI it for the bigger perfromance boost to keep going for a while again.

But yes, I agree that PC games will start pushing again now that consoles can handle a bit more than their previous gen. Quite excited to see what comes out graphics wise over the next few years

I’d love an SSD but just can’t justify it. I’m not too worried about how long my games take to load a game or startup from boot.

SSD’s don’t give actual in-game bonus to performance so it’s pretty much a thing of “If I ever have the disposable income and got nothing better to do with it then I will get an SSD”

my PC is almost 3 years old now and it’s pretty much capable of running games at the same quality as a console can (I’m talking about the same look here. Not ultra on PC vs console version. I am talking about whatever quality setting on PC looks the same as on the consoles)

That being said I can play any game at ultra with 60FPS if I put my resolution down to 720p which is on par with the res most console games are playing at.

It depends on the display – PC or console. Play BF4 via XBOX one on my PC display… it will look shocking 720p on a native 1600p display lol.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            April 30, 2014 at 07:53

For sure. But that’s why you get a decent display that can handle both full 1080 and 720.

I have my PC connected to my TV.. It’s a native 1080 TV. Yet my games still look great at 720 because I did my research before buying my TV and I didn’t even buy a super expensive one.

It’s all about smart buying and buying for what you need.

I knew that at some point I would have to downgrade to 720p for ultra gaming or go to high settings if I wanted 1080. So I got a display that could handle both resolutions well.

Still, I can run all games high at 1080 with 50FPS+ so I am still happy for now and have yet to permanently downgrade to 720p gaming.

          • Aron

            April 30, 2014 at 08:02

Yeah its all about thinking before you step.
You must still have a decent video card if you can play everything at 50fps up on high – say a 670 or 660ti or equivalent AMD card? Better than the XBox One no?

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            April 30, 2014 at 08:06

            Prepare to be shocked:

            a 560Ti.

If I run my games on high I get 50FPS+. Utlra then I start looking at the 35 – 45FPS bracket depending on the game naturally. But if I drop any game (even Metro) to 720 on ultra I get 60FPS.

On a 560Ti. This is why I get edgy with people assuming that you need a uber card to keep up. It’s just not true

Yeah it grills me too. It skews what PC gaming is actually. There are very few people who always have to play at Ultra. Most PC gamers are happy with anything up to down to medium, with some even being ok with low.

Very few have to always have Ultra.

Yes it’s nice when you do upgrade and get Ultra. But we know that that will last maybe 2 years then we downgrade to high. After that another 2 years and we are playing on Medium. Once you are on medium that can last a long time.

One does not always need ultra and medium on PC doesn’t look crap compared to a console. It looks pretty much the same . Yes it looks “bad” compared to a PC ultra setting but again, not everyone needs ultra. The vast majority don’t need ultra. I don’t. I’m happy with medium – high.

PC & console are almost different markets now. If you mainly want baysplosions, pew pew or a spiky-blue–haired androgyne ((c) Geoff) then play on a console. If you mainly want strategy, online BS or taxes then use a PC. Unless you want both, then get both – or just a PC & settle for a few less of the first options if you only want one.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the huge sales were because of things such as Steam, HumbleBundles and GOG.

However as they pointed out the majority of revenue comes from MOBA and Free to Play.

This means that the biggest cash flow is microtransactions…. I’m not really sure how I feel about this…
      I know it’s not a good feeling tho….

Usually the argument was consoles have the larger market and less piracy. But the mobas disproved it now, and WoW disproved it in the past. Piracy is also going down considerably now with the convenience of Steam, Gog, Humble Bundle and Origin. Kickstarter also works great for PC, since you don’t have the QA and red tape of the console environment.

And now your PC is moving to your living room, either streamed through Shield or Steam OS or just physically with SteamOS or Steam Big Picture Mode and controllers.

I can simply put my PC in the living room over weekends, watch all my series and play the games in Big Picture Mode. :>

If you own a PC, you own a console. And once everyone realise that. Valve is going to end the PS5 and Xbox 2 race before it even starts. The master race will triumph. The console environment is archaic for developers and gamers. And it will underline its self inflicted doom.

Lol have an upvote because it was such an awesome post. However I have to slightly disagree.

There will always be a spot for consoles. Whether it’s SteamOS on a microATX form factor PC (That is really just a console that isn’t as optimised as a true blood console) or just a device you know you don’t need to upgrade or touch in any way for at least 5 – 6 years.

No I am not a console fan. I am a PC fan. But I think the argument between PC and console is invalid. There is a market for both and both will stay strong for generations to come. Not because one is better than the other but simply because of choice.

Build a killer PC that can last for 6-7 years and save on games, or fork out less for a console, pay a little more for games but have the convenience of size and no need to upgrade any component at all (a PC might need a new graphics card halfway through its life time, but not a monster one. Just a mid range R2500ish card).

So it all evens out really and it comes down to what games you prefer.

There are many console games I wish would come to PC but not enough to get a console. I am sure there are many PC games console ownes wished would grace their platform too but not enough to switch.

It’s all about the games and what you prefer to play 🙂

      VIVA GAMES!

Sir… I disagree with you – just a guesstimate how many people with consoles have PCs? Taking that into consideration buying a console isn’t saving at all because if that person used their head and purchased just a mid to high end video card they would have a cheaper and more round system that would last them much longer than any console. Also if more people used their heads there wouldn’t be exclusives on consoles right – why would they be… they would be seriously limiting their market which wouldn’t justify doing it. PCs are the way forward just think about it bar exclusives console are rubbish – pieces of plastic that take up space. My PS3 went on once during that last 2 years and that was for GTAV now its in the bin as I needed the space.
        Awesome comment Rags 🙂

I think you missed the whole point of my post.

There is a market for both because people have different preferences.

I only have a PC. No console and I believe PC is a better buy.

I bought a PC 3 years ago that still performs fantastic and doesn’t need an upgrade yet. I bought myself a midrange 560Ti and it still performs fantastic. High settings for all games even now.

SO yes, I very much know that smart buying is the key.

But just because I am capable of doing that doesn’t mean everyone wants to or wants to have a PC. I have to accept that there are people who prefer console for their own personal reasons.
Therefore there will always be a market for both PC and console simply because people prefer choice and make choices based on what they feel is best for them.

For you and me it’s PC’s that don’t have to be the strongest on the market. Smart PC building as I like to call it. It doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and can last at least 5-6 years with maybe a midrange graphics upgrade halfway through or perhaps just getting a second card of what you have to SLI and sustain performance (thus being even cheaper)

So yeah, I agree with you about the benefits of PC’s and how to smartly go about not having your PC chase you out of pocket. But it’s short sighted to say that consoles should not exist or that buying a console is stupid because there are many good reasons for having a console that console owners would be able to point out and effectively argue

Range of games, for one. in the Xbox360/PS3 gen, I switched to console mainly because of ease of use, but also the range of games on console was better than PC.
I am thinking of fighting games like DOA, Tekken and the like that will not make its way to PC. Also, a lot of the FPS games I loved was being released on console too. Plus amazing (at the time) exclusives like Gears of War 2 and so on.

and that’s the choice I am talking about right there.

You bought what was smart for you to get because of the games you wanted.

I am ok with not having those games (However, the Last of Us nearly made me give in) as I am happy with the games that come to PC. That is my choice.

It’s also why neither PC nor console will become irrelevant. Personal, diverse choice, keeps both platforms alive and always will

I’m fully with you guys its maybe because I’m the kinda guy that doesn’t like having two devices that can both do the job – waste. I only buy the console because of exclusives its such a shame and then when playing it, its so horrid compared and I have a sweet TV. It would even be nice if you could boost the consoles performance somehow but they really are poor.

          1. I have both PC and console (Like Albany, best of both of both worlds)
          2. PS4 is a greater buy than a mid range video card IMO.
          3. Consoles still has exclusives and it is not going to change and I would have bough one just for God of War trilogy and RDR.
          4. Consoles are pieces of plastic that take up space? Do you rent an apartment in Japan? The PS4 is a teeny bit bigger than the PS3 slimline. That’s until the PS4 slim line gets releases eventually(plus a price drop usually coincides with it.)

PC will always be no.1 when it comes to gaming but you can never leave the average Joe in the dust. Not everyone want’s to screw open their PC and fiddle around with RAM or a video card. They press a button, the console switches on, they select a game and play. Plus console games always work. I tried to get the LOTR MMO running and had to struggle for a week with my ISP to get the proxy configured. Plus go to any MMOs website and see how big the bug list is.

I reiterate PC will always be no.1 and I am almost sure that anyone who thinks consoles are useless doesn’t own one, but they should own one anyway because for one, Last of Us is coming to PS4

“2. PS4 is a greater buy than a mid range video card IMO.”

Fair statement but it costs the same as a high end card. So if I bought a high end card for the price of a PS4 would you still say the PS4 was a better buy?

And I’m actually asking not trolling.

IMO I disagree with you even on the midrange buy because of my midrange purchase I made with my 560Ti which still keeps up today.

But if we are going to compare price for price I’d like to think what your view would be if I went and upgraded to a R6k graphics card whether you’d still say that the PS4 is a better buy. Legit question. not trolling. Just like to hear your thoughts on price for price

            April 30, 2014 at 08:12

Well if I were to upgrade my video card I would really want to be assured that I will be able to play most games on high graphics for the next few years. I’m not sure a R6k card will last that long, but maybe I’m wrong. I myself am still using the Radeon HD 6800 and it gets the job done.

I just feel a Ps4 is a greater buy because of exclusives, PS+ (yes the only have indie titles at the moment) and peace of mind that every single game will run without any issues at all.

But consoles are a luxury item, no denying that at all. The games are ludicrously expensive.

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            April 30, 2014 at 08:21

Yeah agree on the luxury item part. At least a PC you can do other things such as documentation and work etc.

My gfx card cost me R2200 or something almost 3 years ago and it’s still doing the job well.

a R3k graphics card now still gets the job done more than is needed.

So if my R2.2k card is still doing high after almost 3 years then what would a R6k card like this do?:

Nope I’m not in Japan but recently moved and wanted everything mounted on the wall plus I have the original PS3 the fat one. I agree there was a place for consoles but if you look forward, how many PCs/Macs/Steam box etc. are ready out the box (future and even now)

How much is a PS4 around R6.5k that will get you a top end video card that will out last a PS4 any day and perform over 100% better or it will get you two mid range ones still better than the PS4, then give one to your GF if that floats your boat.

I also have both only because of exclusives – and do the marketing research around exclusives maybe it will enlighten you as to how they work – Nintendo Mario etc. are exclusives tell us how they are all working for Nintendo and Mario?

My point is consoles are very quickly becoming irrelevant – not needed and pointless.

            April 30, 2014 at 08:26

The PS3 sure was fat. Wish I had a GF. Exclusives are one of the reasons I stay with Sony and I say again. Average Joe will always buy a console. Plug and play gaming for the less technically inclined. I mean XBOX and PS combined have sold more than ten million units in less than six months already.

            April 30, 2014 at 08:34

Here is the thing… If you didn’t have anything, sure you could buy a PS4 or a high end Gfx card at the R6k mark… However, the Gfx card is not all you need for a PC. Building a PC with Gfx, HDD, Ram, KB/Mouse (Again, not something included as a controller is with a console) and still try and match that R7k price or even stretch it to R10k as you can ‘use it for other things’, your PC specs become a bit more limited. I am from the master race and will always remain (My PC’s have pretty much always lasted me 5 years+, Gfx included), but this logic is just wrong.

Consoles have their place and some games just game easier on consoles with controllers. I love my FPS/RPG/RTS on PC and some of that I will never touch on a console. However, something like Fable just works extremely well on a console…

            April 30, 2014 at 08:36

This is where the kicker comes in. If you already have a PC, then upgrading is very reasonable and not that expensive. It’s the initial purchase that can turn people away because it can be so pricy.

However, I was able to build my rig for less than R10k and it’s still going strong (I also aim at the 6 year mark for the PC to last) but when I upgrade it will only cost me R2500 or R3k max for a new GFX card. Maybe even less if I just buy a second GFX card that I have for SLI purposes. Then it evens out to having 2 generations of console.

SO, meh. Much the same same all round no matter which route you go

            April 30, 2014 at 08:56

I get what you saying but most console owners do have some PC in their home for work or administration purposes the same be can argued when saying you need to included a TV in the costs for a console. Even if they don’t and are avid gamers you can get way better value out of getting a new PC over a console – I have no doubt if you take everything into account – Hardware/subscription/benefits and additional royalties you pay for games.
Why can’t Fable be played on PC – remember they are pretty much exactly the same hardware except the console is propitiatory and exclusive. The only thing is exclusives and all we doing is feeding this exclusivity by buying this rubbish – and I fall for this same trickery 🙁 I refuse to purchase a PS4, Ill get buy.

Yes, they make more money on PC by providing a products people want & the consoles don’t supply. Why is that bad for the gaming industry & why shouldn’t they do it? Does everything have to be GTA, FF or COD?

How does it take away from the console experience to have a different experience on the PC? Why assume that we’ll see less AAA games & more betas because of this? I don’t understand what you’re on about because there’s no threat to console gaming from PC gaming.

The problem is the people who make PC games are also the guys who make console games. When something occurs in PC it’s not too long before it heads over to consoles. Microtransactions, always online, forced social integration.

All this started on PC and slowly bleeds over to console. It’s the natural progression of gaming.

Therefore when they see it really “works” on pc (even though it’s not working it’s just often the only choice PC gamers have) then they start implementing it on console.

SO it’s very possible that the whole kickstarter / early beta paid for access /etc will start to appear on console.

With consoles now also being so connected it’s even more possible that console games won’t be as polished as they always were because it’s just so easy to release a patch over the internet.

So the same sickness that has many people angry in the PC community will start to appear on consoles. It’s unfortunate but the industry is about making money and the easiest way is to push products out faster which lead to unfinished, unpolished, buggy games

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            April 30, 2014 at 09:05

It’s already happening everywhere & no platform is immune. But that’s not the fault of either platform, or the gamers on said platform, it’s the fault of publishers. All this crap has been happening for years & steadily getting worse everywhere as they try to get away with screwing everyone over as much as they can while lining their pockets.

Personally I don’t mind betas for testing, not that I play them much, but I hate the idea of paid early access games & will never support that. Other people love it, good for them.

I really do think that consoles are moving away from their core strength, which is switch on & play a game, to add BACK all the PC fluff that they stripped away in the first place.

That’s the thing consoles no longer are that.

            Games on new consoles need elements installed to drive, they are getting microtransactions, etc;

Consoles are moving away from core gaming the same way PC is. The entire industry is shifting.

Yes, it’s not the consoles fault but publishers and devs. But unfortunately this is where it is all heading

Our PC’s are imported, but I don’t want a ready made PC with a Celeron in it. I would have to build one and in our currency that can easily cost R15000, but the PS4 costs R6500. So that is in fact a huge difference here. So even with Steam sales I still think that console gaming is better here unless you have another use for the PC like coding or whatever.
