PES 2008 Review for the PS3

Pro Evolution Soccer has been a PlayStation mainstay for many years now and is developed by the same company that develops the incredibly popular Metal Gear Solid franchise. Which is why what I am about to report on must be very  worrying for the PS3 fans.

According to Pro-g.co.uk (a popular non biased UK website) the PS3 version of PES 2008 sucks. It’s absolutely terrible.

Put simply, the game suffers from horrible slowdown and drops in frame rate that happen too frequently to ignore.

Whenever the ball gets more than a few feet above head height, you’ll notice the frame rate drop to worrying levels.

But the annoying thing is that when the game inexplicably and implausibly slows down, it puts you off your timing.

However what I found the most disturbing was

While we did manage to improve matters a little bit by turning off the stadium effects, knocking off the commentary and playing without weather effects in a different stadium, we can’t be expected to game under these conditions just to get a playable match

The thought of having to turn off effects is a horrible flashback to my bad PC gaming days. The main benefit of consoles is that you never need to fiddle with them to get the best game-play.

And before anyone has any bright ideas

It’s simply not on. And yes, the game was installed on the PS3 hard drive, before you say anything. Suffice it to say, whatever way you play PES 2008 you’ll instantly notice its glaring technical performance flaws

They do go on to say that apart from that the game is better than PES 6. Apart from that? How can there be anything apart from the game being virtually unplayable.

So how is the multi-player? Well the servers haven’t been turned on yet so they don’t know.

There were a lot of complaints about how bad FIFA played on the PS3 and I know a lot of people have been looking forward to this, but by all accounts this game is an insult to PS3 gamers and if you are lucky enough to have a PS3 and 360 then get this game on the 360. None of the above problems have been reported on that console.

So how do you feel about Metal Gear Solid 4 now?

[Update] There are now competing reports about how bad the Xbox 360 version  is. Apparently the grass looks ‘funny’ when looking over varying differences. Seems a bit of a non complaint really? Especially when compared to the PS3 problems

    Another view:

It’s by no means perfect: the frame-rate drops when the screen gets really busy, usually during a quick clearance when the box is flooded with players or, occasionally, during a replay. But, when you’re actually stuck into the action, it’s likely you won’t really notice or indeed care.

Apparently, the Xbox 360 version has its own problems:

It’s by no means perfect, though: compared to the PS3 version it runs more smoothly with far fewer drops in frame rate, but on the flip side there appears to be a weird distance filter which overlays the pitch, so the grass near the camera looks sharp, halfway up it’s a bit more blurred and in the distance it’s fuzzy. Normally that wouldn’t be a problem but the depth changes are fairly visible

I know this is gonna be a big knock for a lot of fans, the ps3 forums have been buzzing for a long time about the release of this game, so this is potentially heartbreaking.

However I already have FIFA08 which is awesome and I have no need for another soccer game 🙂

Don’t believe everything you read guys, the article states that there have been a lot of complaints about Fifa, but Abev says “… I already have FIFA08 which is awesome…”.

You’ll probably find the same thing with PES08, do you really think they’ll release a game that is “unplayable” come on.

Reminds me of the Gamespot review of Lair, but everyone i speak to that has the games loves it. How can that be?

@Abev, don’t make me go find that thread about you complaining how bad FIFA runs on the PS3 😉

@Banana, Lair got lambasted by every single non partisan game reviewing site so I think there may be something there

Read IGN UK’s take – they say the framerates in the PS3 version are a minor niggle and that the Xbox 360 version has some visual problems of its own in the form of dodgy depth of field.

@Lazy, yeah Lair got bad reviews from almost every site out there. But the people that pay money for the game say it’s great. I’m not talking about fanboys here, i’m talking about people who actually played the game for more than an hour. How long do you think these reviewers spend on a game?

The people i spoke to said that the controls are difficult and the 180 degree turn didn’t work properly but that after a while the controls are great.

But that’s Lair, we’re talking PES here and all i’m saying is the game can’t be nearly as bad as they make out. Remember even these so-called non-partisan sites have reviewers who are biased, reviewers who are morons and reviewers who don’t spend nearly enough time playing the games they review. After all these “professionals” are nothing more than individuals who have an opinion.

A perfect example is all the 10 scores Halo3 got, they give the game 10 but then say “graphics could have been better” or “could have been longer” How can a game get 10/10 and have ANY bad points? This is an example of moronic reviewers.

I completely agree with the glut of 10 scores at the moment.

However frame rate issues on a sports game are not acceptable. If a game is bad it deserves to be lambasted.

I agree, my point however is that we can’t trust reviewers opinions. Take the 2 reviews from Pro-g and IGN UK, both respected.

They cannot decide on a technical issue, one says it’s a “minor niggle” the other says “It’s totally unplayable”. How do we as consumers consolidate these 2 opinions?

We don’t, we wait for someone we know and trust to buy the game and let us know.

Yea Lazy I will admit that I did complain about the framerate in FIFA initially. This was for a number of reasons the first was that I hadnt heard anything of this nature before I bought the game, in fact I had heard the opposite so I was looking forward to a graphically great game.

Keep following the same post though and you will see how it has evolved, it almost seems like it was a first run weird thing (dont know how that would be possible though). Seems to be going fine now, but maybe I just dont notice it as much.

I also gotta agree with Banana on LAIR. I have down some research into it and people that own it seem to love it and they say it just takes a while to grasp the controls.
So ultimately PES might be okay. I know IGN gave it a 9.2!

I suppose people who dish out $60 for Lair wont call it kak now will they? 😉

In regards to PES08, I would rather play a demo or rent a copy to see how bad the lag affects your gameplay, coz since its a game which require proper timing to succeed it could just ruin the fun.

Like Abev said, currently FIFA08 is enough for now in terms of soccer.

@Ruslan, “I suppose people who dish out $60 for Lair wont call it kak now will they?” i can only hope you are trying to be funny or sarcastic.

People who pay for duds complain more, they don’t try and pretend the dud is great. I see PLENTY of 360 owners complaining about the RROD situation, and plenty of people complain about the PS3s (supposed) lack of games.

Why would people pretend Lair is good if they don’t do it with much more expensive consoles?

The truth is it’s only the reviewers who had a problem with Lair, and i suspect it’s because they don’t have the time to master the controls.

The irony is that reviewers can make or break a game. Although in some cases so called gaming gems got extremely high scores but were never accepted by the gaming public. Several PC & Console games come to mind which were different brewed games that didnt stick to the regular “EA niche” formula and were avoided.

@Banana – the smily was meant as funny btw.

Hey according to FIFA (or someone else as irrelevant in my life) football games are the reason England suck at football, so take one for Queen, don’t play soccer games, they’re destroying the empire! ;P

I have been a fan of fifa since 98 and i love it, but i also like playing pes against my mates. Ive just bought a ps3 and got pes 08 and noticed that it was slowing down. When I first played it i was like what is going, but ive got used to it now. i only notice it in the entrance scene when they walk on the pitch which really cheeses me off cos i like having a football game that feels real and has the atmosphere. I think they they shud stick more people on the sideline and bring the crowd closer to the pitch, that wud make it feel better.

    I am relieved though cos i thought i bought a dodgy ps3!

pro evolution is a good game. sure pro evolution has its glitches, but so does every other game. And if you cant wait for the game to load up, well then grow up and and wait for the darn thing. this game is great compared to other games. And 1 more thing, just because this game may have glitches, it doesnt mean that every produced by this game will, so dont even start about that dumb ass, each game has certain memory, and the more memory, the longer it is to load. Know that reviewer dumbass.
