Pettiness comes to Steam Greenlight

1 min read

Valve has blocked the publication of a game on Steam after the developer opted for using a publisher once it had found one, instead of sticking to Steam Greenlight.  Code Avarice now needs to go back to Steam Greenlight in the hopes of getting enough support, despite their publishing deal with Adult Swim.

In a bizarre twist, Valve is blocking publication of Code Avarice’s game, Paranautical Activity, because they

didn’t want to send the message that indies can seek out publishers to bypass steam greenlight

Are you kidding me?!  So because the developers found someone who wanted to publish their game, they can’t say ‘no thanks’ to Steam Greenlight and still use Steam?  Considering the huge competition on Steam Greenlight, Valve would be happy for any of the developers who manage to find another route to publication.

Now look, this doesn’t look like my kind of game in the slightest.  That said, it seems really bizarre that Valve would do this.  Let people publish their games, especially if someone else is willing to pay for it!  If you want to hear the developers explain what happened, as well as promote their Steam Greenlight, check out the video.

Steam cannot be that guy now. Steam is legion, Steam contains multitudes, Steam is the many, the one.

problem is when rules are rules when the person making the rules wants them to be.

Follow money trail to land of happiness and all that. Quite different to a happy trail, I should think.

These guys tried to short cut the system. If Steam allows them to do that then the entire system collapses. Cities will burn, the dead will walk the earth.

They can say what they will about steam, but 4 years ago steam wasn’t the crap service it is today. Their support is a joke, they don’t test an update before releasing it, their steam servers are always overloaded and they clearly lost all interest they had in gaming. Thanks to steam, I can’t play the games that I bought from them, thanks to their updates.

    Second EA here we come.

Are we even using the same steam? I used to get pissed at steam starting up to play but since I got origin and uplay now there is something to compare it to. Then you get the steam specials and the integrated voip and messaging , man you GOTTA love steam.

I have had issues, nasty ones.

But perhaps those issues are to do with the game developers?

I have had to bypass Steam startup for certain purchases to eliminate various issues, eg Quake (I wanted to get the NIN soundtrack up and running). The guys at Steam do not do proper testing before releasing older games to the public.
Their forums are loaded with tips that users have had to provide feedback for to get various features implemented or just getting titles to work with differing system config’s.
They also cut features like songs from the GTA franchise.

            Along with the following:

            · Ozzy Osbourne -“Bark At The Moon”
            · Kate Bush -“Wow”
            · Herbie Hancock – “Rock It”
            · Afrika Bambaataa -“Looking For The Perfect Beat”
            · Lionel Richie – “Running with the night”
            · A couple of songs from Radio Espantoso

            Just saying…

Yeah same steam, though not the same steam I signed up to 4 years ago. I play games, I don’t chat, so to me integrated messaging is pointless. Recently formatted again, installed a fresh copy of steam and CS:GO, and to my expectations, offline CS:GO and steam works perfect, until I switch online and update the game. instant steam exit and crash.

Me too. Steam has made my gaming life a misery. It has two partially redeeming features (you can download game if you damage/lose your disk, and you don’t have to go searching for updates) but it’s draconian measures offset this.

It constantly undo’s changes you make to it’s settings (for instance, I have lost count of how many times I have told it NOT to update a game automatically, log on hoping to play, and am forced to wait an hour while it pulls in a 200 mb update I didn’t want). It’s offline mode is a joke (you can play offline for a while, but then it “loses” your login information and you have to reconnect. This is a global problem – check forums for people with limited internet connectivity like those working on oil-rigs, deployed in military etc). It attempts to download whole games off the net instead of the disk, even though you tell it otherwise.

I’m not a new-user looking for gripes or who has had a couple a bad experiences. I’ve walked a long journey and agree that Steam is better than Origin, Uplay etc. But you know what was even better? Put-Game-In-PC-and-it-plays. Ah…..those where the days.
