Pillars of Eternity could be set in a whole new world

A whole new woooooooooorld

2015 feels like the year of the successful Kickstarter for me. Or the Kickstarter that really, really delivered on its promises. One such sterling example of this has to be Pillars of Eternity.

Old school to the max, Pillars of Eternity was a classic throwback to the Dungeons and Dragons RPG action of yesteryear that defined games such as Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale. The game has been a big success, so of course a sequel is being considered. One that’ll pit players against the rising tide of darkness in a stranger land.

And that’s something that is being considered, as developer Obsidian gets to work on the first expansion, The White March. “For [The White March], we’re taking on the other side of the Infinity Engine equation, which is Icewind Dale,” Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer said to PCGamesN.

It’s not really that big of a departure, but in the base game we very much made something that was very cosy, very Dalelands, very temperate. Meadows and forests and things like that.

I would say in Pillars 2, if we wound up doing a sequel, which we certainly want to do, we would probably take it to someplace which is not quite as familiar.

Which is exactly what Baldur’s Gate II did. Baldur’s Gate II took you to Amn, to Athkatla, which is nearby the rest of the Sword Coast territories but it’s different enough that it feels new and interesting.

Whatever designs that Obsidian comes up with for the expansion, it’ll most likely be a good long while before we see a sequel, if it ever does get greenlit. Because right now, folks are more than happy to experience one of the better RPGs of 2015. No rush, ya know.
