People love sports games and the good ones are consistently within the top-selling games on any platform, every single year. It’s a bit unfortunate that there are some sports games that seem to be marginalised. Yes, I’m talking about Rugby and Cricket. While Cricket finally got its pretty good game in Don Bradman Cricket, digital Rugby fans are still waiting for a game that’s really worth playing.

Rugby World Cup 15 doesn’t look like that game. All eyes then, to the other contender – Rugby Challenge 3. This one, at the very least, has the licence for South Africa’s own Springboks. Yes, SARU’s awarded the video game licence to the folks at Tru Blu, giving you the opportunity to don the green and gold.

The game will feature key Rugby powerhouse teams such as the Springboks, Wallabies, All Blacks, England and more, all under official license. The release is planned for the last quarter of 2015.

Rugby Challenge 3 builds on the success of previous games to take the franchise to a new level with the best of the best Rugby Unions.” said Tru Blu Managing Director, Sebastian Giompaolo.
“We are excited with the evolution of the new generation of consoles pushing graphics into a stunning new zone. The new consoles compliment Rugby Challenge 3 perfectly”.

Here’s its great big feature list.

  • NEW! Rugby Sevens – this first time addition brings all the realism and fast-paced action of live seven-a-side Rugby to the Rugby Challenge series.
  • NEW! Take total control in Be a Pro mode. Join a club team as a rookie and control your own destiny over 13 action packed seasons. Complete match goals to improve your skills as a player and work towards becoming the captain of your club. Work your way up the domestic ladder, and impress selectors to play for your national team on the world stage!
  • NEW! FanHub – the interactive Player Creator allows you to create yourself as a player and play then through the ranks.  Players and teams can be shared online across all supported platforms.
  • BRAND NEW! Crisp next gen graphics – increased resolution and textures.
  • Real-time commentary from seasoned rugby commentators Grant Nisbett and former All Blacks turned commentator Justin Marshall. French language commentary from Eric Bayle and Thomas Lombard.
  • Play in different game modes including: Single Match; multi-team Competition; extensive multi-year Career Mode; Be a Pro Mode; and Online Multiplayer Mode.
  • Play over 11 competitions including the all new Super Rugby, ITM Cup and Currie Cup

It’s coming to XBOX One, Xbox 360, PS4, PS3 and PC in the last quarter of this year.

It is funny how many people think eSports is just playing the latest FIFA or Rugby Challenge/World Cup rugby competitively on XBox. Then they make jokes about it in that line just sound like complete retards.

This game is apparently the reason why the “official” IRB WC rugby doesn’t have the “official” Springbok team in it. Because SARU worked with (read received some randellas) from the developers of the World cup rugby game released 3 months after the Rugby World Cup.

Selling brand rights is a valid and smart move by any sporting organisation.

Whether they gave these guys exclusivity or not is a different story but properly organised international sporting bodies should have sorted this out in the main agreements…

I really don’t see how SARU can be seen as doing anything wrong here. The more money they got the better for local Rugby

More of dig at SARU’s press release wording that said “SA Rugby is in the process of developing a digital gaming product with HES” as if they had meaningful input in the game.

The IRB should carry the blame for not proper all team licensed game under its own banner.

Also not releasing a month before World Cup within all the the hype build up is a bit of a business fail.

I honestly think it’s bad writing when you start off an article with “People love sports games. You might not, and I certainly don’t.” I don’t like sports games that much either, but it is really off putting if someone is excited to read up on the new Rugby Challenge game and then reads those first sentences. You are basically saying: Your choice in games is bad and you should feel bad. I don’t mean any offence, it’s just my opinion. Constructive criticism, if you will.

We’ve always added opinions to news, it’s what makes us special.

However I agree with Mossel on this one as well, it is something I’ve raised before with the team

Yeah, got the same feeling from that 1st one. I’ve been keen on playing a rugby game for some time now just could not find one that will justify the price tag. Almost game up reading after ” Rugby fans are still waiting for a game that’s really worth playing.”
