So all those who were at rAge this weekend at least got to see a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One even if you didn’t manage to get to play on one.
So now that we have close to first hand knowledge it’s time to chat and see which one you are planning on getting… I’ve jotted down some pro’s and con’s for each console below to help the argument discussion.

Now here is the hearsay part, when speaking to most journalists at the Lazygamer party I was very surprised to hear that most of them would prefer to get the Xbox One simply because of the better launch titles and those haptic triggers.
I personally am not sold on the controller; the triggers are cool and all but I don’t find the controller to be that comfortable with the sharp angles actually being uncomfortable after a while.
But what we really want to know is what you think? Are you Rockefeller and will be getting both or are you going to hold out for the Xbox One or is the temptation of playing next gen games this year just too much to resist?

I must say, and this is nitpicking. But I like the fact that my PS3 can stand vertically. Saves me a load of space. It’s a real bummer about the Xbone not being able to do that (or at least not officially)

It is good for heat reduction when it is designed that way, this design doesn’t really seem to get any “special” benefit from being placed vertically, since heat goes up and the vent is right on top of the fan, horizontal seems better for that console.

In principle, and this is greatly simplified, a hoot-like structure retains more heat than a slender tower – regardless of the number of vents. It all boils down to how heat is concentrated.

How the hell is vertical better for heat reduction? On Xbox 360 it covers the biggest air vent on the system and was a major cause of rrod.
Also vertical lets all heat migrate up through the motherboard vs horizontal where heat rises away from the board.

Quite simply: What happens to heated air? It rises, right? Simple high school physics .
Now, what happens when you have a larger surface area (like a horizontal slab i.e. xbone) with a pocket of hot air underneath it? It dissipates that heat much slower than a smaller surface like a vertically standing PS3 or xbox 360. It’s also one of the reason why IBM replaced their old line of flat computers with vertically standing towers back in the 90s, and for the very same reason, it’s recommended to have a PC tower standing upright.

Is this on the newer 360 slims? I still have an elite and the air vents are on the side and in the back. If they made it harder for the slims to stand upright than that’s some shitty engineering on Microsoft’s part.
Regardless, a horizontal 360 or PS3 can double as a room heater – now just imagine your components cooking! Mmm… taste just like bacon!

The only thing that was wrong with the PS3 was after years of use, the processor overheated due to the dialect grease drying up, and then, only then did the Yellow Light of Death occur. I had 3 of the 360’s within a 7 month period get the red ring of death. The second time it happed, it was only 12 days after I got the replacement! That may not have occured to everyone, but most people that I talked to said they had to do it at least once.

Have any of you looked at the new design of the xbone. It has been designed to stay on for ten straight years, with drastically improved ventilation and a giant fan. Plus it can reallocate power to reduce heat when it gets to hot, so this argument is moot.

Not really, M$ has been tweaking chips not even stress testing it and saying they made the xbox one more powerful now buy are crap… The Xbone could turn into a firehazard if they are not careful better yet a red ring scenario, OR the system fail safe as people assume there is one will prevent the system from starting after a day of hardcore gaming..

Standing the system vertically wasn’t the cause of the RRoD. Microsoft being too cheap to use metal RAM heatsinks and instead using foam caused the RRoD. I ended up owning 3 Xbox 360 and only one PS3. I won’t buy from Microsoft again because of an inferior product and nickle and diming you on every accessory.

Unprovable Mike, you may have a case once the lifecycle of these machines has come to an end, but right now, you cannot make a claim to know the facts on games that haven’t launched yet.
Additionally, whose to say Ryse doesn’t get fine-tuned and tweaked by the time it releases, and it reflects last gens (PC-wise anyway), industry standard?

That’s assumption, Gavin. As with Kinect on the 360 (or move for the PS3) any developer adoption for multi-platform titles will be absolutely minimal at best. Gimmicky and clunky at worst. Kinect fans will have to look to purchased exclusives, and Microsoft’s in-house studios for compelling content. And going by history, they aren’t in store for much of anything special. That ‘killer app’ for Kinect, has yet to show itself, and there’s no reason to suggest we’ll be seeing it anytime soon.

Was leaning towards the PS4 before rAge. After hands on time with the PS4 controller, I wanted it less. Then I had hands on time with the xBone controller, and I cannot use words to describe how comfortable it is and how awesome that Haptic Triggers feel. The games on the xBone also look better. We got a VW Vivo or something on holiday in June. Man, is a boring car. It does everything well, is comfortable, but just left me feeling, meh. Whataver.
The Getz I got last time was a lot more fun BUT neither of the two hire cars I used this year (each for a week or more) were fun because they were manual. Manual is for Sunday afternoon, in a sports car.

I actually did research for average prices for service, major service, Cam belt and common fixes on cars. Had a spreadsheet: Audi, Merc, BMW and Volvo.
Volvo was last by a mile and Merc came out tops. Bought one, I find the parts quite cheap. Brake pads the twice the size of the ones in my wifes car, for R50 more. Lasts 3 times as long too. Stuff like that. Most expensive service was R8K, where a part of R4k was replaced. I love!
Reliable is not the correct word, but it is all I have.

Yeah, but if your gearbox breaks, um, oops. I actually have insurance on parts like that, not very expensive, but a new gearbox is R80 000, for example. But that is the same in most cars.

In a years time, when the hype around games not yet released on the new platforms has died down, I will get the one that most closely matches the following:
1. Reviewed Games I am interested scoring generally well
2. Games I am interested in being good, not just reviewed with high score, then hype dies down (Saints Row IV)
3. The one with the new Mass effect / Dragon Age type game
4. Is it worth the money vs current Xbox 360 for the amount of games to play? If not, wait another six months or a year.

Still not hyped about anyone of them. I don’t trust these big corps anymore. They’ll promise you the sun, moon and stars to get you to buy their console and then a month or two afterwards change all the things that will make their wallets bulge but take away the fun in gaming.

My personal view….I’m not willing to wait 2 years plus for that to happen. Sony’s selling the PS4 at a loss once again and are now focusing 80% on the Vita! They’ve spent an insane amount on advertising and will have to wait for current 1st party titles to turn profitable before they’ll be able to expand more on that! They’re also much more focused on PS3 exclusives an Indies as they’re cheaper to produce! Sony simply does not have the budget MS have for next gen 1st party development and that is why I’ll stick to the Xbone! Maybe I’m proven wrong but the launch titles alone show MS have a huge advantage!

I cant go so far as to believe that Sony will wait up to 2 years to start their focus on next-gen. Yes they are focusing on the vita, but its been starved for that focus since release, they cant be planning the same mistake again.
Also i think we are going to see some very cool ps4 – vita pairing in the near future, which is why they are hitting the vita so hard all of a sudden.
MS has the advantage with launch titles you are right there, Im not entirely sure why Sony gave that to them on a silver platter, but i am hoping they have a sneaky little plan up the old sleeve.
I do not believe they are too invested in ps3 exclusives and indies to also focus on their new baby. Its just not good business practice or logic, and they are not idiots, so that is not the case.
MS have shown themselves to be an absolute bunch of buffoons since day one of the reveal, and to think they have it in the bag is a big mistake.
While I dont want to call xbone shit because its not, it is a good piece of hardware with good potential, i do believe that sony will take this one for the sole reason that they are more customer driven, while MS is opinionated and arrogant to thier own misguided beliefs.

Quite a few actually, but to benefit, you’ll have to create an american xbox and PSN account, and at this stage with Microsoft console banning people for accessing content outside their geographic zones, we might see something similar on the bone’s xbl – Actually assured, given the security boosts on account creation and maintenance.
Sony has been mum about this issue, but I think it’ll become an issue during the generation, so I wouldn’t be surprised if both SOny and Microsoft start banning people for accessing content that’s not licensed in their regions.

Not trolling, this is a serious question. Why is everybody saying the Xbone has a better launch line-up of games? I’m not really seeing it. I get that the controller is a matter of personal preference, but the games I don’t get. Are you saying this just because of Dead Rising 3 that was on display behind closed doors at rAge? Ryse and Dead rising. I don’t really call that a “line-up”. And please don’t say Forza, because then I will say Driveclub and Gran Turismo (granted, GT is also on PS3). I would much rather call both console’s launch line-up mediocre.

I think it is all a matter of opinion. To me the Xbox One lineup is better. I want to play 8 launch games from the One compared to 4 from the PS 4. That’s why I will probably get the One first then the PS 4. It is all about personal preference.

Why is it so hard for people to admit, straight up, that Box A has more than Box B? Through common sense and general public feedback everyone knows that the difference is how it’s used But, the larger (and/or faster) resource pool is a measurable metric, and is typically listed as a pro, except in cases like say.. The PS3 where tapping into those resources took more time, new methods of programming etc.
The difference is, now it’s the easier to program for, with the best specs, and cheapest price. So even if the One’s Esram isn’t that big of a deal to work with, the PS4 has the higher ceiling, that’s just reality, why word things ambiguously? Time will tell if that translates to better experiences…but you can’t really put that disclaimer on the bottom of every console box, can you?

Yeah, I’m still torn. I owned a PS1, PS2 and currently have a PS3 and 360. I hardly ever use the PS3 mainly because I loathe the controller (no matter what little bits I put on it [rubber sleeve, trigger button clip-ons etc] it never sits in my hands comfortably. Therefore I’ve always used my 360, and I got rid of the Wii after it got boring about 2 weeks after I bought it.
Now with the next gen, I have absolutely no interest in Kinect – do not want it do not want to pay for it, and the PS4 controller redesign looks good; although I’ll need to handle it to make sure…
Having said that, the upcoming Steam console is also interesting….so….I really don’t know!
At the moment I’m leaning to PS4 and Steam Console…..

Like Xbox 360 has proven for the last 4 years of it’s life XBOX WILL NEVER GIVE MORE. They will take your forced pay to play xbox live subscription (which also paywalls everything other than single player and blu ray player) make 2.75 billion per year + revenue from ads on home page yet NOT deliver exclusives.
Sony has an army of studios so it will always pump out new exclusives. Sony puts money back into the games like the free exclusive content on AAA multi plats (PS3 – Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, Batman AA & AC, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Far Cry 3, FEAR, Battlefield, Fight Night, Assassins Creed – PS4 – Destiny, Watchdogs, Black Flag).
So cons against Xbox needs to include paywall services, non upgradeable hard drive, no free games with xbox live, no free exclusive content (only pay to play timed DLC from 3 publishers), & exclusives on PC (titanfall, highest rated xbox one game is gonna be better on PC with free online play the PC way).

Let’s look at the Next-Gen/Microsoft timeline:
Febuary 2013- Sony holds a conference. Rumors of DRM were already out there because developers requested it. Sony has no comment on that situation.
May 2013- a.) Microsoft holds a conference for the Xbox One. Tells you about DRM openly and always online. Took the initiative and all the negativity.
b.) Few days later AFTER MS, Sony announces NoDRM to undercut Microsoft. They also undercut Microsoft by removing the PSeye from being bundled with every system, thus removing the 100 bucks off the PS4’s price. (Which backfires because they are now selling at a loss of $60 per PS4. We know the PSEye is $60. If PS4 were to sell at $499, they’d only be selling at a $20 loss. They choose the “Shame Microsoft to get consumers” route, which until recently has been working charms.)
June 2013- a.) Were it not for MS’s DRM, they would have eviscerated Sony at E3 because Xbox’s exclusives are better. Titanfall killed it. Ryse looks good. Dead Rising 3 looks like badass fun. Forza 5…do I need to say anything else? Killed Drive Club. However, Sony pandered like they never thought about DRM or a PSEye Bundle.
b.) Microsoft comes out and removes DRM/mandatory connection a few weeks after E3. They evolved to the consumer. It was the Developers who asked for DRM. Remember that. You heard no developer complaining about the Xbox’s DRM. Only the consumer. Call it what you want. Microsoft trying to save profit. Etc etc. You, the consumer, figured out that you had power to affect Microsoft.
c.) PRISM scandal surfaces and has Microsoft’s name plastered across the front page. Sony has not been linked yet.
August 2013- Gamescom. No retail PS4’s were available to play games, except for Knack. Every other game was running on a PC or Devkit. Xbox One games are seen running on Xbox One’s and available to be touched; wires running directly from Xbox One to TV.
October 2013- Sony admits they cut the camera out because of price. (Yet, like I said, they would only be at a $20 dollar loss if they had it bundled. How does price make sense I ask?)
So…Now we are here. You know all of Sony lies. You have proof. Where has Microsoft lied? I can possibly give you 1 area. They said they couldn’t remove the Kinect without drastically changing things, but they did anyways. Did they lie? I think so. Yeah. They did. But…why does that white lie matter? Just trying to sell you something. It’s like saying “I don’t want that extra controller in my bundle. So since you are forcing me to get it, I won’t be buying your console!! BITCH!”
1 lie. 1 half-assed lie to sell you something. And if you have fears of Microsoft spying, they can’t. The Same X1 is launching in Australia. The Kinect was removed because of Australia’s laws, as was the mandatory connection. People seem to think that other countries don’t matter. And NOW China is going to allow Microsoft to sell an Xbox (or look-alike rebranded)! China. The most security conscious body on the planet. The one country that trusts no one. Thank you China. Thank you Australia. Thank you Germany. Thank you guys for your laws that force Microsoft to be truthful. Xbox One is not region locked. Means all Xbone’s are the same. SO! The American on is the same as the European one. Microsoft cannot spy on you without breaking major international laws and possibly starting a war with China.
Yeah…Microsoft has no choice but to tell you the truth, coupled with 1 white lie so far. Yet…Microsoft is gonna reverse DRM. Or spy on me. Like I said. Developers want DRM. DRM is on Steam. DRM will make it to consoles one day. If you think Sony is excluded, tell that to their pocket books which lost 4 billion dollars on the PS3. Sony will be the first to screw you over cost.

Well they said Windows 8 was good. Anyway PS4 for me as Infamous beats anything XBox have to offer and I’m also looking forward to Killzone. Plus there’s also all the future exclusives from Sony’s studios. The only game in the launch line-up from ms that I find the slightest bit tempting is Dead Rising but I played the first two and never finished them as they got a bit boring after a couple of hours. So nothing there to make me spend £430.

What does windows 8 have to do with Xbox? By now, you as an internet user should know that you do not buy even number OS’s from Microsoft. The odd numbers tend to be the best. IE, XP (5) and 7. Plus, we know Windows 8 is a mobile OS they are forcing on desktops before everyone has a touchscreen desktop like in the future movies. It’s a great mobile OS. Just a shitty desktop one.
Anyways. Dude. Go back through all the E3 videos. Watch all the PS4 and Xbone games videos. THEN pretend like PS4/Xbone/PC don’t exist. Pretend like all those games are on Wii U. Then come talk to me. Be unbiased. Infamous looks ok for me. I’d rent it. I wouldn’t touch Knack because I make my own Knack with Project Spark. As a Carpornosapian, Forza is my holy grail. Drive Club just looks like shit to compare to Forza. Even more so when I have Forza Horizon on my 360 which I play on a daily basis when I get bored. Drive Club is a let down. I also suggest you listen to no one who calls Forza arcade because it is……….with all the assists turned on. Tell them to turn the assists off and THEN rate the game. Ryse looks pretty fun. I have no clue what the story is gonna be, but I want to find out. I understand the game will lose playability after you beat Multiplayer and the Story but I’ll give it a buy later. Not day one because I’m not sure they have the Kinect functions from the first iteration of Ryse where you can punch and kick and block with your hands and feet. And then you have all the cross-platform games which are amazing. And let’s throw in the Order 1886 i think? I have no clue about that game but I hear some good things. And then we have the first true Next-Gen announced game: Quantum Break. They decided gameplay was not enough. They made a tv show to go along with the game with episodic content and it’s cool that your actions in game decided what happens in the show. I don’t know if it will work, but the game concept does not exist. Remedy is so far outside the box, they’re boarderline on the event horizon of the nearest black hole from Earth (exaggerating).
Now that’s what I saw. You go look at them for yourself. Pretend platforms don’t exist. Then come talk to me.

You said give an example of when Microsoft had lied, you weren’t specific that that it had to be about the XBox. Anyway I was just messing more than anything else. I couldn’t be more unbiased. I’ve gamed on ps3, xbox 360, pc and Wii this generation so I went into the next gen with an open mind and for me ps4 came out on top. This was mainly due to Sony’s studios as I’m not ready to give up games from Naughty Dog or Santa Monica yet as them along with Infamous have been some of my favorite series. I can live without Halo and Gears of War. I’m not much of a racing game enthusiast but I might give Driveclub a go as Sony are giving it away free.

PS4 for me. User replacable HDD (My PS3 went from a 60GB at purchase to a 500GB now), no paywall for Netflix, Amazon Prime, F2P MMOs, etc., better hardware for less money. I have ZERO interest in motion controls (Kinect, Move, or Wii.) Plus if it makes it to the U.S. the PS Vita TV looks pretty sweet for a bedroom PS4 without having to buy two top $$ consoles.

More launch titles? Are you REALLY going to buy all the launch titles? PS4 is coming out with some good games at launch (Watch Dogs, Killzone, Assassins Creed, 2K, etc.) by the time you’re finished with them there will be another awesome lineup of games released. The only reason I would consider getting an XBOne would be for the Halo Series. Been playing Halo since Combat evolved so I want to finish the series. Anyways, Sony thought things out better, and unlike Microsoft who had to backpedal on some of their “ideas”, PS4 will win the console wars. Peace out – Red

The PS4 has some amazing launch titles! Call of Duty Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassins Creed 4, Knack, Driveclub! I don’t think you should be the one to tell us what is good and what is not. Keep in mind also that you will be able to stream old Playstation titles via Gaikai. I’ve been a gamer on xbox for years now. However, I think Microsoft let Oboma in their office to just fuck everything up. Fuck what the people want and lets set some hideous rules and regulations. I think Sony kept the consumer’s needs and wants in mind.I know this is my sole opinion however I’m out for the best interest in what we the consumer’s pay for and want. Yes I’m very glad to be switching to Sony. Microsoft keep the Oboma mentality out of your office and start listening to what the consumer wants. Look at the economy and how fucked up things are and keep that in mind for your next go around when making all these rules and regulations.

to me, they are same. In the end it’s really depends on what my friends are getting on. but I do love PSN is free. This year, due to busy schedule, I didn’t touch my PS3 for 9 months. if I had Xbox live, I would’ve paid for that 9 months for nothing. I know it’s not expensive, but xbox is made by microsoft who made 100 different versions of windows just to nickle and dime customers.

How does the Xbone have better launch titles?. Ryse looks clunky and boring, and the visuals aren’t as impressive as they’re making them out to be. Forza looks pretty good, but its racing game not a system seller, and dead rising 3 may or may not be laggy as hell due to so many enemy being on screen, it certainly won’t be at 60 fps. I’m not saying the Xbone is bad system it has its pros, but launch titles is not one of them.

You cannot create a label for unreleased games, that you’ve not played in their entirety. Once upon a time, Skyrim was a 10/10 on this very site, was it not? So, stating ‘amazing’ titles, is subjective and not provable by this site, or anyone until the games themselves are in the populaces hands.
As far as including XBL/PSN…not sure the consoles themselves can use that as a pro/con. Unless they’re giving subscriptions away for free with the purchase of those consoles, I think Sony is for all pre-orders (a year free), not sure about Microsoft though (and even then, for the rest, it’s not a pro, because you have to pay on top of the original cost of the console, just to have them). Plus, it’s not like PSN/XBL aren’t available on other consoles…so how is that a pro/con for PS4/Xbox One?
A more factual pro for the PS4 would’ve been, capable of accepting any 3rd party HDD for upgrade (How useful was that for the PS3? Hands? Who upgraded their PS3?)
Stating improved controller this, or haptic trigger that, is subjective also. I’ve seen people who dislike the new PS4 controller and I’ve seen people who dislike the haptic triggers.
“Paid for exclusives by Microsoft” – Also subjective, nobody knows the quality or quantity of these titles.
A Pro you missed for the PS4, but added for the One….Sony’s offering live TV shows, through the PS4, without needing a cable box (Deal with Viacom). Yes, Microsoft is offering TV features, but they also require a TV Box, so in addition to the One, you’re also paying for the Cable subscription. But, we’ve yet to see how these features will pan out on either machine, so calling it a pro or con for either is a bit premature.
“Apparently more powerful” – An asinine statement if I’ve ever read one. You have a list of pro’s and con’s here, and you can’t even be straight on one that really has no confusion, or subjectivity to it. The specs on the PS4 are more powerful, end of story, it’s a pro. Deal with it. As I said in a different post, time will tell if that power gets used in ways we can see and appreciate. But, when creating a list like this, before the consoles launch, you have no idea how those resources will be applied.
You purposefully state that the LG staff’s choice is heresay because of the haptic triggers and launch lineup, but forget that you added those two as Pro’s, for the Xbox One. Heresay, is not bullet points for a Pro/Con list.

You cannot create a label for unreleased games, that you’ve not played in their entirety. Once upon a time, Skyrim was a 10/10 on this very site, was it not? So, stating ‘amazing’ titles, is subjective and not provable by this site, or anyone until the games themselves are in the populaces hands.
As far as including XBL/PSN…not sure the consoles themselves can use that as a pro/con. Unless they’re giving subscriptions away for free with the purchase of those consoles, I think Sony is for all pre-orders (a year free), not sure about Microsoft though (and even then, for the rest, it’s not a pro, because you have to pay on top of the original cost of the console, just to have them). Plus, it’s not like PSN/XBL aren’t available on other consoles…so how is that a pro/con for PS4/Xbox One?
A more factual pro for the PS4 would’ve been, capable of accepting any 3rd party HDD for upgrade (How useful was that for the PS3? Hands? Who upgraded their PS3?)
Stating improved controller this, or haptic trigger that, is subjective also. I’ve seen people who dislike the new PS4 controller and I’ve seen people who dislike the haptic triggers. For example, people have expressed a keen interest in the new UI for the PS4, but that’s not listed as a Pro. Why? Because it’s subjective, what one person likes doesn’t mean everyone else does.
“Paid for exclusives by Microsoft” – Also subjective, nobody knows the quality or quantity of these titles.
A Pro you missed for the PS4, but added for the One….Sony’s offering live TV shows, through the PS4, without needing a cable box (Deal with Viacom). Yes, Microsoft is offering TV features, but they also require a TV Box, so in addition to the One, you’re also paying for the Cable subscription. But, we’ve yet to see how these features will pan out on either machine, so calling it a pro or con for either is a bit premature.
“Apparently more powerful” – An asinine statement if I’ve ever read one. You have a list of pro’s and con’s here, and you can’t even be straight on one that really has no confusion, or subjectivity to it. The specs on the PS4 are more powerful, end of story, it’s a pro. Deal with it. As I said in a different post, time will tell if that power gets used in ways we can see and appreciate. But, when creating a list like this, before the consoles launch, you have no idea how those resources will be applied.

Honestly, I’m not as much of a gamer as most people on here, but I just want to say that I think x-box 360 fans are going to get x-box one and ps3 fans are going to get ps4. I’m getting a ps4 bc I have a ps3 and I could care less if someone’s getting an x-box one. You can get down to the nitty-gritty spec and content comparisons, but the reality what console is REALLY better is a matter of opinion… It’s a war of alliances… And 4 months nobody’s gunna care anymore! Just sayin

Obvious choice is obvious. Not using the PS4’s Dodgy Headset or PS Eye anyways. The other issues like launch titles, well Killzone and Watchdogs is pretty exciting and neither console is backwards compatible but both companies are still supporting the older ones till who knows when.

If game developers were smart this next gen they would develop the game at top quality first for PS4 then it would be cheaper to port over to xbone because all they would be doing is downscaling it too 900p and chopping half the graphics out. .. Developers please do it this way then we do not have to live with xbones poor graphic quality and resolution .. thanks 🙂

Personally I’m getting a PS4, saves space since it stands vertically, I personally like the controller better and Rumors of the Xbone causing circular scratches rendering disks unplayable? Sadly I don’t wish to take that risk, and personally I like Sony better than Microsoft.
