Playstation graphics have come a long way

Cutting edge! - Darryn circa 1997

You know what the really bad thing is about going to E3 in a year where next-gen consoles were unveiled? Upon returning home, all my current-gen games looked crap in comparison to what I had experienced. I’ll be the first to admit that graphics don’t make a game, but I am also a high definition whore. And the Playstation brand has come a long way from jagged edges to bleeding edge visuals.

Oh hell, some of those video examples above have brought back some cringe-worthy memories. Just look at those anti-aliased edges on game characters. Solid Snake didn’t even have hands in the first Metal Gear Solid game, but had to rely on blocks of wood for appendages instead.

I scoff at those visuals. Scoff to the max! But at least I have some good memories to go with those classic games.

  1. Aaah, Paul Phoenix and that hated Yoshimitsu. Good times. The graphics got better but gameplay started to suck 🙁

agree so much! Final Fantasy may not have looked as awesome back in the day, but the game play and story was so much better!

Exactly how I feel about MGS. I am yet to enjoy a MGS title as much I enjoyed that first PS one.

Companies are going more for eye-candy than brain-candy these days. Even the new XCom (which I love to play) pails in comparison with the depth of the original. But apparently graphics are more important to the current generation of “gamers” who cannot handle deep games 🙁

You’re telling me, when I think back to my childhood, these games pop in to mind. I just generally miss these types of RPGs long forgotten now.

I totally agree with you! I looked at Project Phoenix now and pledge towards it on Kickstarter. Looks like its back to old school and they know what they doing! So maybe just maybe the good old RPG is not forgotten.

I also just think people don’t appreciate RPG’s like back in the day… Now its just flashy graphics and lame stories for a quick buck

Man Project Phoenix looks so great , was listening to the music samples and whooo boy, it’s awesome! and I agree, thing is, generally , the vast majority of the gaming world doesn’t have the patience for any sort of proper development and pacing in a story, given, some games drag, but everything needs to be big and explosive. No one really cares for those small moments anymore, like Rhinoa floating to Sqaulls lap in Ragnarok or even silly things like Cloud dressing up as an escort and seducing Don Corneo lol…..but I do hope it makes a return some day

Ah dude i just laughed so hard when i read the Cloud dressing up as an escort.. Was so fun. I agree, I would rather play a long dragged out game with a proper story line and some emotional depth than a game that is flashy and when you finish it you ask yourself “Was that it??”

I really hope Project Phoenix brings back the small moments like you mentioned.

lol All I could picture in my head while typinng was Don Corneo humping the air.
and me too man … me too. Hopefully that new Ubisoft game will bring it back too

PS graphics have always been poor. PS1 graphics were teh worst and xbox had better grafix as PS2, and Xbox 360 had better graphics as PS3. Therfore xbox one will blow ps4 out of the water and into a ditch where it will lie screaming in pain.

Not really true about the 360 and PS3. PS3 games were typically lacking due to developers building on the 360, then porting to PS3. With the extra layer of translating, the PS3 was still able to keep up, which is impressive. If devs had built on the PS3 then ported to 360, and PC, then 360 probably wouldn’t be able to keep up, and PS3 would be better off.

I will say that xbox was better than ps2 in the graphics department, but I believe it also had a higher fail rate. Something that MS can’t quite seem to get away from.
