Playstation Move breaks the 4 million barrier

46 second read

The tit-for-tat between Microsoft and Sony continues, it was only yesterday that Microsoft were shouting from the rooftops that they had sold over 2.5 million Kinects in 25 days and now Sony has hit back.

According to Sony they have sold 4.1 million Move units which works out to be 1 Move unit for every 10 PS3’s on the planet which is an incredible return in such a short time period.

Granted it would be fair to point out that you’re only going to ever own one Kinect while having 4 Move controllers isn’t out of the question, plus they are cheaper.

But 4.1 million is a lot of units none the less and will simply mean that more developers are going to sit up and take notice and that just means better games for the end user… you.

According to Sony, they’ve shipped 4 million PS Move bundles (individual controllers excluded from tally). I initially thought it was just 4 million Move controllers, but 4 million PS move bundles… insanity!

Which probably means they’ve sold close to 3 million PS Move bundles to customers, but we’ll only know how many was ultimately passed onto PS3 gamers by the end of this quarter.

Neither of the big 3 releases “sold”, especially before a quarter ends. Microsoft has been known to use sold and shipped interchangeably, but it still means “shipped”. They just don’t have the decency to say so. Sony on the other hand explicitly states “shipped” (sold to retailers) between quarterly reports, and once the retail sale data come in, they amend it to include “sold” (i.e. to us).

In any case, as I’ve pointed out before, “shipped” is a sale, and they’ve already made their money on it, whether the retailers sell it, is immaterial, but if you post high shipped values, it must mean there is a demand, otherwise, you’re just shooting yourself in the foot.

That’s what came out of an article last night (while I was reading through N4G), although they could have had the wrong end of the stick.

If you consider how much consoles are, and how much we pay on average (a month or even a year on games), then the price of Kinect actually becomes less of an issue.

A link from inconsequential and unknown website? Fantastic!

The counterargument is that once their financial quarter ends and you reconsider what Microsoft declared was sold or shipped, it never really ads up to actual retail sales (although, Microsoft has been very reluctant to post their retail sales figures on their website, but the American NPD figures generally filled that void with extrapolated sales data).

VGChartz? No, they’re projections are as useful as predicting the future using tea leaves or cat’s entrails.

This is an old issue Jonni, which has been covered ad nauseum for the last 5 years. Whatever is released mid quarter, is “shipped”, regardless of commentary from inconsequential sites, Major Nelson or even blogs. (Unless of course, MS and Sony releases how they’re able to capture actual retail sales, in real time)*

*Speaking of which, I was reading some of the commentary on N4G, and one commentator hinted that MS might be using scanned tags (presumably scanned by the retailer as the item is purchased, which sounds plausible, but how would MS be getting that detail, from 10 000s of stores around the world, and crucially SO FAST!!?).

In any case, the easiest way to track your sales is how much you’ve shipped to retailers, and once the sales data trickles in, or you have reorders etc, you can start tracking actual sales.

In any case, Jonni, regardless of what your article says, the official press release from Microsoft says “retail sales”, and there’s no way of knowing whether they mean “sold to customers” or “sold to retailers”. Since MS generally uses “shipped” figures for their consoles, it would therefore be safe to assume that they’d use “shipped” values for Kinect as well.

But as I’ve already mentioned, even with the PS Move, once they sell it to retailers, it’s a sale. They’ve made their money on the item.

Watching my 3 year old drive the Xbox “Minority Report” style without instruction or guidance, or watching my wife freak out when the Xbox recognizes she’s stepped into view makes it crystal clear why even with its issues – a bit of lag, lots of space etc, Kinect gets a heck of a lot right.
