Playstation still PS from the block

Don’t be fooled by Sony and PlayStation’s size – they still have love for indie games.  In fact, they are punting four indie games on their blog!

And to be honest, they look pretty awesome!

Hohokum, coming PS4, PS3 and PS Vita in 2014, is a collaboration between artist Richard Hogg and Honeyslug.  Players take on the role of a snake-type character, except you’re also sort of a kite!  Hohokum strives to take away the pressure of video games – the being told what to do and fearing failure.

There are goals and secrets to discover. There are even Trophies. But at its heart Hohokum is a playground, a place to wander about, perhaps even lose yourself in.

Aesthetically is looks cool, and I’m curious about the game play.

CounterSpy (its working title) is a game from Dynamighty coming to PS3 and PS Vita.  Based in the Cold War paradigm, this game is a love letter to classic side-scrollers, using the 50s-60s aesthetic.  Although primarily a single player game, they are looking to add in some ways to compete with friends and even have cross-platform plans.  I just love how the lead designer describes it!

As an elite member of C.O.U.N.T.E.R., your goal is to infiltrate, sabotage, and strike at the heart of two opposing Super Powers embroiled in a frenetic Arms Race that threatens the existence of humanity. You are countering the insane plans of these Cold War foes, raiding their seemingly impregnable bases and undermining their mad military machinations, all before they can launch their ever more ridiculous weapons of mass destruction against each other.

How very retro James Bond-esque!

Rymdkapsel is a minimalist space strategy game coming to PS Vita.  Developed by grapefruit, aims to include all the fun parts of an RTS, with none of the "fiddly, stressful bits".  In it, you build your own space station – managing tasks and controlling minions along the way.

It’s not all smooth sailing though, when your base grows bigger as does your need for space and resources. All this expansion will surely attract the attention of the dreaded enemy. This leaves you with the task of balancing your quest for expansion with the safety of a small, tight, structure.

Martin Jonasson, the designer and developer, has a background in flash games, and the look of Rymdkapsel reflects that.  I just hope that it goes deeper than a flash game – otherwise he could just develop this game as a mobile game for the Wii U.

I think my favorite of the bunch is Doki-Doki Universe, coming to PS4, PS3 and PS Vita – and no, it’s not just because it’s FREE.  Developed by HumaNature Studios, you play as a robot that has been abandoned by your family.  When an alien named Alien Jeff comes to recall and scrap you, it’s time to prove that you do still have humanity – whatever that is.  Through your interactions with various entities on a range of planets, Alien Jeff will judge you.  Plus, there are personality tests!

You can get a full personality report from the Therapist who lives on your home planet, which by the way, you get to decorate. You even get to visit your friend’s home planets and check out their personality reports.

Doki-Doki is a lot more than just a game. It’s a huge simulated “living” Universe of intriguing content, filled with interactive stories and self-discovery.

Gotta love the effort Playstation is making with indie games.  They’re like, hipsters!
