Pointless Quote: Peter Moore talks

Gaming executive mercenary Peter Moore, who has made moves from Reebok into games, where he then shifted from Sega to Microsoft to EA, now reckons games will make the world a better place. Here’s what he told attendees at the MI6 marketing conference in San Francisco:

Games have the power to make people happy and to make the world a better place. And I do mean the world, because we are now opening up massive new markets like China and India that will bring billions of gamers.

Good stuff, but we should remember that Pete said this to a hall full of marketing and investment types, so they want to hear good things about games – even if they aren’t true. I’m not sure where all this ‘good’ will come from. Brain Train doesn’t make you smarter, Wii Fit doesn’t make you fitter and despite all the talk of improved hand-eye co-ordination, after years of playing games I still can’t throw a ball properly. If anything, games make the world a worse place – how often do you get annoyed because people want to do stuff while you’re having a cracking good time playing something? The agitation, the agitation…

You also have to wonder about all the poor folk out there who can’t afford the rising price tags of games. I guess they’re not getting in on the coming utopia…

I’m not sure about making the world a better place but gaming is good for something. According to a newspaper article in the Business Times about 3 months ago, gamers tend to be better at problem solving and thinking out of the box – both attributes ranking high on any company’s skills wishlist. Apparantly this is a fact that hasn’t escaped big corporates overseas, so there is hope for us.

I always knew putting “Hardcore gamer” in my interests part of my C.V. would pay off 😛

Gaming is good because if you play war games like CoD4, Battlefield games,Counterstrike: condition zero, those games could at least teach us something like how to survive a gun fight or be better prepared if you actually go to war like say Iraq. They could even improve our reflexes or split second decision making, etc.
