Pokémon Sun and Moon’s Pokédex entries are the stuff of nightmares

Poke-horror-(3)

Pokédex entries have been the core of Pokémon games ever since the franchise began. It was something worth pursuing, an idea to complete a library with as many entries as possible so that you could secure bragging rights. Over the years, the Pokédex itself has evolved to include more features, although reading through those brief descriptions of your recently acquired pocket monsters has always been one of my favourite quirks of the franchise.

Pokémon Sun and Moon however, is a little bit different. Because the Pokédex entries here are downright terrifying. Spoilers after the image, and thanks to NeoGAF for several of them:

Poke-horror-(1)

It all starts innocently enough, with some Pokédex entries detailing the physical feats of newly acquired Pokémon:

Bewear

bewear

This Pokémon has the habit of hugging its companions. Many Trainers have left this world after their spines were squashed by its hug.

Things quickly start getting a bit dark from this point on however:

Toxapex

toxapex

Toxapex crawls along the ocean floor on its 12 legs. It leaves a trail of Corsola bits scattered in its wake.

Golbat

golbat

Sometimes they drink so much blood, they can’t fly anymore. Then they fall to the ground and become food for other Pokémon.

Honchkrow

honchkrow

If its Murkrow cronies fail to catch food for it, or if it feels they have betrayed it, it will hunt them down wherever they are and punish them.

And then the nightmare fuel begins:

Gengar

gengar

Should you feel yourself attacked by a sudden chill, it is evidence of an approaching Gengar. There is no escaping it. Give up.

It apparently wishes for a traveling companion. Since it was once human itself, it tries to create one by taking the lives of other humans.

Primeape

primeape

It has been known to become so angry that it dies as a result. Its face looks peaceful in death, however.

Palossand

palossand

Buried beneath the castle are masses of dried-up bones from those whose vitality it has drained.

Frosslass

froslass

When it finds humans or Pokémon it likes, it freezes them and takes them to its chilly den, where they become decorations.

The soul of a woman lost on a snowy mountain possessed an icicle, becoming this Pokémon. The food it most relishes is the souls of men.

The entry for Drifloon, is somehow hilariously horrifying as it body-shames its victims.

Drifloon

drifloon

If for some reason its body bursts, its soul spills out with a screaming sound.

Stories go that it grabs the hands of small children and drags them away to the afterlife. It dislikes heavy children.

And then we’re back to the terror of a Pokémon who hunts and drowns its prey with a Glasgow kiss:

Araquanid

araquanid

It delivers headbutts with the water bubble on its head. Small Pokémon get sucked into the bubble, where they drown.

Mimikyu

mimikyu

Its actual appearance is unknown. A scholar who saw what was under its rag was overwhelmed by terror and died from the shock.

Glalie

glalie

Legend says a boulder on an icy mountain absorbed the distress and regrets of a stranded mountaineer, giving rise to Glalie.

I’ve saved the best/worst for last however. Here’s the entry for Phantump, which is just downright horrifying:

Phantump

phantump

These Pokémon are stumps possessed by the spirits of children who died in the forest. Their cries sound like eerie screams.

Well…I’ll never look at Pokémon the same way ever again. Although I do feel slightly better knowing that in-game children are left on their own to fend against such abominations when they take on their Pokémon challenge. Because I’m horrible that way. Pokémon Sun and Moon is out right now, and it’ll leave you scarred for life when you read the rest of the Pokédex…maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

I was just listening to Lamb of God’s Walk With Me In Hell, when I read this. Sort of fitting.

That’s some creepy ass stuff. But not as creepy as
“It happened one morning – a boy with extrasensory powers awoke in bed transformed into KADABRA.”

*shudders* Children are being forced to battle eachother and be slaves to other trainers.

Ah, the Pokedex! A groundbreaking, highly-advanced device made by the most genius scholars and scientists containing invaluable data about Pokemon… that usually begins with “legend has it this Pokemon…” or “it is said that this Pokemon”
