Practical uses for Kinect Video Capture

For those of you who has been following the work of Okreylos, here’s a bit of an update.

Up until this point we’ve seen him utilize the Kinect in order to render images of himself and his room and even insert 3d objects into these videos. That’s impressive enough on it’s own, but things have just gone up a notch.

Read more after the jump.

I decided to do a bit of research and found out that Okreylos, or Oliver Kreylos, is a Researcher working for the University of California Davis and more specifically concentrating on the area of Virtual Reality. For years he has been looking for a cheap 3D Camera that could help him simplify his interface with VR. He finally found a company that was developing a $200 peripheral that would do what he needed it to do. Not long after that Microsoft bought the product and redesigned it to work with it’s Xbox 360 platform (which coincidentally worked out to $150 at the end of the day). Due to the encryption protocols, Oliver decided to pay it no mind, thinking to hack it would be pointless.

But as you all know, a chap called Hector Martin, managed to hack it for pc use, and Oliver looked at the project with renewed interest.

Now going back a bit in Oliver’s history, one of the main things he has been trying to accomplish with his VR research was implimenting it to practical things, which I’m thinking he plans to integrate into everyday life. One example of this is building molecular structures or Buckeyballs as he likes to call it, as can be seen below:

However, he wanted a more “hands-on” approach, and now, using his trusty Kinect, and a Wiimote, he is able to do so a lot more practically as demonstrated below:

Personally I think we are approaching an age in technology where things are becoming easier and easier. I’m thinking a combination of Kinect and Robotics might not be too far off in the future. What do you guys think?

I meant in the long run, the buckyballs seems to be a first step of sorts.
