Prepare for all-new The Settlers

Settlers kingdoms of anteria

Perhaps it’s because I enjoy some micromanagement games, or maybe it’s the part of me that loves city simulations, but The Settlers always has a soft spot in my heart. Ubisoft’s Blue Byte has revealed a new iteration in the series, and it might finally surpass the re-release of Settlers 2.

Here is the announcement trailer for The Settlers – Kingdoms of Anteria.

According to Ubisoft, the new game will:

[…] Provide a completely new game experience by combining city building and real time strategy action. You will build up a prosperous economy and lead your champion through dangerous adventures in order to create a wealthy, bustling and glorious kingdom.

It would seem that there is a renewed focus on the champion (read: combat) aspect of the game, although I’m hoping that they keep true to the roots of the game. Fans of the franchise love building roads and buildings, upgrading things, worrying about whether there’s a well in the right place and if all the careful planning was for nothing when new buildings mean pure traffic mayhem on those tiny little roads. Wait, was that just me? I swear, I could never get those guys to carry the bread, beer and water around the town fast enough.

Will you be watching this new incarnation, or are you too faithful to Die Siedlers Zwei, the most revered version of the game? Do you think there is still room in the gaming market for these types of city-building simulation games, or has that market become so saturated in recent years that the older version are failing to connect with players?

I’ve never played any of the Settlers games. I’d also wait to see if it’s Simcity – Ubisoft Edition first too.

I’ve played the first three but I lost touch after jumping to console, it’s really a lot of fun. gathering resources, upgrading buildings and units.

Loved Settlers 2, could not get myself to play any of the other.
Had to stop playing settlers 2 when my iron turned into pigs. Really killed my industrial revolution.

I love these city building sims. But after Anno 2027, Sim City 5, no thank you. After Origin and Uplay, no thank you.

    Don’t support DRM.

I have to agree. The genre started moving away from what fans loved about it. Complex city management in a simple gameplay environment.

Adding strange gameplay mechanics and restrictions for the sake of change is not worth it. The first few anno’s are far superior and the same can be said for sim city.

We play the seafarers expansion, the Knights one just looks like a cash in to me.

We also played Ankh-Morpork, which on the surface did not seem fun but we played because, you know, Pratchett. Last round went as follows: Wife won. I would have won. My friend would have won. That close. It was AWESOME.

I’d definitely keen. I love the Settles games but will this one also come with always online DRM? I remember that was a no-sale for me the last time.

true, but sometimes I get bored with the slowness. I hardly every finish a game of Civ or Moo or whatever. I can see I will win, so I stop and restart

Thats also true, but i usually play these kinds of games at night. I find during the day i cant play them cause these games are so time consuming. One evening i played for like 5 hours straight and didnt even realize the time, but that usually happens when i play with a new race for the first time. I dont play these games often but when i do then it will be usually a time i just enough time for them as well.

Moo3 put in a clock so that would know the time, with optional alarms. Good idea that. Also remember Civ V ads, started with support group “One more turn”

Pity the rest of the game had some issues. I still played it loads and loads, but I figured the trick to killing the AI, so it just became processional after a while, even on the hardest
