Prey

Ah, here we go Bethesda. Here’s yer problem right here. See this? Ya got a leak. Yeah, ain’t too nasty, but it looks like you’re losing all the pressure in your Prey 2 pipes. Better get that fixed before we’re knee-deep in Codename Danielle.

Rewind to the start of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 console generation, and one of the early hit games that arrived was Prey. Trippy, action-packed and filled with enough head-spinning physics to make your brain activate rollercoaster memories from a dodgy theme-park, the game was a hit.

Naturally, a sequel was on the way. If you were patient enough that is. Bethesda has been keeping a tight grip on the property, rubbishing any rumours and news that the game had been cancelled. And it looks like Arkane Studios is developing the sequel after all, which is operating under the codename of Danielle. Check out some of the design documents, via AGB:

If you don’t have time to read through all that, here’s the gist of it: Prey 2 will be a FPS with RPG elements and is currently scheduled for a Q3 2016 release on Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 4. Odd choice for a release platform there, as the Xbox 360 will most likely be phased out of big budget game releases by then.

Prey 2

Described as a spiritual successor to System Shock 2, Prey 2 will also be developed to unfold over 10-20 hours, with multiple playthroughs encouraged as the player gets a chance to explore stealth, hacker, fighter and psionic skills.

Enemies include your usual mecha, transforming aliens and creatures who will upchuck acid at you while you fight back with an assortment of weapons and abilities that affect gravity around you. Which means that I’m going to need some motion sickness pills before I play.

Prey 2 1

Not bad, but it sounds like your standard first-person shooter so far. So what gives Prey 2 that extra edge? Well according to the design documents which have a serious crush on the Luc Besson film The Professional, your character will need to take care of himself.

Players will have to eat and sleep, and can even fall sick during the course of the game. That can be countered by scavenging for medicine, as crafting will play a large role in the game. Interesting.

Bethesda has yet to comment, but hopefully E3 will shed more light on this project.

  1. That header image is so sexist! I’m shocked & appalled at the same time!! Firstly it starts with the name “Danielle” which obviously is a woman’s name. Then it’s compounded by the use of a bird logo, and bird is a negative word used to describe a woman. This is followed by the title – PREY. So clearly, women are the prey. Who are they hunted by you ask? Look at the “2”, it’s situated in such a way as to represent “square”. Obviously the “square” is meant to represent men, who are typically depicted as being straight line thinkers, while women are shown as circular thinkers. I’m on to you & won’t let this oppression stand unchallenged!!!

I thought Bioshock was supposed to be the spiritual successor :/

I have an idea. Why doesn’t someone make an actual successor, or does it have the curse of the 3 attached to it?

        So it seems dude.

System Shock 3, Half Life 3, will be TOP of my list. I’d even break my rule about not buying release games

Bioshock was, but it had training wheels, Inflatable armbands and adult supervision to protect the kiddies from a game that’s not COD and not too hard to finish

Hopefully Prey does, I’m dead serious though Bioshock was a Sunday stroll compared to SS2

It wasn’t very difficult no. Playing BI right now, outside of a few set piece fights it’s also not exactly challenging. Suppose I could play on hard difficulty instead of medium, but that’s usually more of a chore than a challenge.

Edit: That said, I’m really, really enjoying it.

I know you will not believe me, he actually couldn’t speak for about 5 mins after. Then he declared his undying love for Eva, which of course upset me as we all know she’s MINE…

I liked it, gave a lot of back story. So I’m interested to see where they go with the next episode.

Prey still remains one of my favourite FPS games of all time, really keen to see how they make a sequel.

So is this iteration the same one they’ve were working on (with the bounty hunter?), or did they turf that idea when they said they’re starting from scratch?

(also, that line about avoiding cliches of alien genitalia made me LOL)

I hope its the bounty hunter, looks damn good. That way you can pull in bounties with your chosen specialisation

As a fan of both games, no. I think the original concept for Prey 2 would have worked a lot better (the bounty hunter semi-open world design they had going). If you want to do a SS, do SS3, don’t take separate IP’s and mash it together. Each game has it’s own elements that made it great, and made it feel like separate worlds.

Completely agree with you. The original Prey 2 pitch sounds great. I want that game.
