Project C.A.R.S: Does it make next-gen racing look silly?

Cars

The backronymically-named Project C.A.R.S (community assisted racing simulator) from the enthusiast folk at Slightly Mad Studios is shaping up to be quite a glorious, impressive thing indeed; especially on the PC – which from the looks of it, will be visually much more sumptuous than the sort of racing games we’ll be seeing on the next generation of consoles.

Here’s a new trailer for the thing, running at max on a PC. It’s worth bearing in mind that this is based on alpha footage, which probably (hopefully!) accounts for the fact that cars seem to be floating above ground.

This footage was captured from a beefy PC running with the following setting, none of which really come through in a lossy Youtube video. Yup, 1440p.

Resolution: 2560 x 1440px
Texture Filtering: Anisotropic 16x
Anti-Aliasing: DS4X (Downsampling)
SMAA Post: Ultra

Here, for comparison and contrasting purposes, is what PS4 launch racer Drive Club looks like:

And here’s some Forza 5:

What do you think? Does C.A.R.S make Forza and Drive Club look silly – or do those games’ actual budgets make a difference?

Project C.A.R.S, like Star Citizen, is a wholly crowd-funded venture, and like that space game has a thriving, ludicrously active userbase. It’s coming to Microsoft Windows, Wii U,PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 next year, if everything goes to plan.

You probably want it on PC.

        It’s not a competition Emperor.
That would be unfair to the consoles.

I thought that’s why they always group consoles together when comparing to PC, so they’re not outnumbered.

It looks incredible! Those graphics are great.

however, the physics simulation seems to be a bit off. Probably still being worked on since it is in alpha but that is where the difference will come in.

It needs to be able to feel like driving the real deal if it wants to make it big in the racing scene.

But I am hopeful so we shall see what comes from this.

There haven’t yet been any official launch dates announced, just estimates and rumours. The current estimate is Q1 2014, with the original guess in 2011 being Q4 2013.

It’s only been in development for two years so far, half the time that Turn10 claim to have spent on Forza 5. The difference is that pCARS was shown off right from day 1, whereas normally games are only unveiled when they’re mostly complete and ready for the marketing oush to begin.

What? Sorry about that… Didn’t mean to drool all over the keyboard, but DAMN… Could be a nonsense game, for all we know, but it just looks so magnificently good and makes me just a little…

No denying it looks beautiful and PC’s will always have the edge, but at what cost? To run a game like this with the full graphics requires a PC that will set you back $4500 (looking at NZ price for an Alienware 23″ laptop for instance). I just don’t miss having to look at minimum specs only to realise 6 months after shelling out serious clams that I yet again have to spend more money.

$4500? You’re just crazy dude… It runs flawlessly on ultra with my system which only cost me in total around $1k… CPU = intel core i7 4770k (stock clocked), GPU = Nvidia GTX 970 (stock clocked), RAM = 8GB 1333mhz. Spending $4500 on an alienware system is just outright ridiculous and irresponsible, not to mention my system likely has better components than the one you’re talking about, therefor you could build a system with the same specs as the laptop you mentioned for LESS than what it would cost to build an exact replica of mine. Alienware is for the rich and or lazy, it’d be absolutely RETARDED to needlessly waste a ton of money on something you could easily build yourself for 1/4 the price!
