PS1 and PS2 emulation reportedly in the works for PS4

Final Fantasy VIII

Sometimes, you just want to head back into the past and play a game that didn’t have a million dollar marketing push attached to it, or was a fine example of back in the day when studios would take a gamble on weird ideas. Those days are dead. But the PlayStation 4 on the other hand, might just be ready to administer the kiss of life to your retro memories.

Sony’s PlayStation Now streaming capabilities currently has plenty of PlayStation 3 games coming in the pipeline. But according to a source who spoke to Eurogamer, PS1 and PS2 games will be emulated with a separate system, allowing people to dust off those old games in their collection and throw them into the console.

Something that will no doubt please the bandwidth disadvantaged. While later, less phat versions of the PlayStation 3 console essentially phased out backwards compatibility, the PlayStation 4 has a similar codebase that could be used to house emulator programs, something that Sony is seriously considering.

Even more positive, is the news that these games could get a slight bump in the HD department, making those jagged textures from yesteryear that much more appealing, and far better than the PS3 efforts on older games that were eventually ported over.

In short, there could be plenty of HD remastered versions of games coming to the console through second-hand, digital and re-release collections. Even though I’ve moved on from many, many of those old games, there’s still a bunch of PS1 and PS2 classics that I missed out on. And I’d be pretty damn happy if I could get a second chance to play them again, especially if its had a bit of spit and polish applied to it.

  1. Emulated with a separate system.. by that they mean a system on the console it’s self or in fact a console that’s sole reason is to play pl1 and ps2 games with added Hd effect to the games?

My interpretation: separate system from Playstation Now. I.e. the PS4 and maybe even the PS3 (for those awesome PS2 titles).

Okay lets be honest. They could do this rather easily. Write a emulator for PS1, 2 and 3. The power on the PS4 is MORE than able to run the emulator and the game based on the specs it needed from the older system.

They could also make them run old disc games even. Blu-Ray can read CD and DVD. So it CAN be done. They just don’t want to dedicate resources to making it happen and also the fact that people buying their old PS3 games on PS4 gives them more money.

I don’t get why they don’t just do this. I know they want you to buy the new games rather than old ones. But people will still buy the new games if they’re good, it’s not going to substitute them.

The PS2 and PS3 played PS1 games with no problem. Just another reason to buy the game centric console instead of the Cable box ONE.

I think there’s either an Xbone fanboy amidst or a downvote troll.

i know we all want to play old classics, but sometimes its best to leave those games as GREAT MEMORIES. I bought final fantasy 7 last week for my ps vita and…um, well….it just looks soooooooo kak 🙁
And i know its more about gameplay at the end of the day but not even that saves it. So if they do make this happen, the digital remastering has to happen

If my PC can do it I see no reason why the PS4 can’t.

Disclaimer: I own a PS2 and PS3. My PS1 was stolen several years ago and at the time the PS1 was no longer available for purchase.

I bought myself a ps2 last year, and three weeks later a ps3. Considering the ps4, but I will give it another year or so to mature, the main bugs will be sorted out and a good second hand game market will be established. Until then I have Max Payne 3, GT 6, GTA V and Okami HD to finish 🙂
