PS3 3.50 firmware Update Kills Unlicenced Pad Support

BOOM

One of the coolest things about the PS3 is that you could pretty much plug in any HID compatible gamepad, and it would work just fine with your PS3. That’s no longer the case, as the latest firmware update for Sony’s black box has nixed support of unlicenced peripherals.

Before you fly in to a fit of rage (FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!), know that this is for your safety; apparently counterfeit PS3 controllers have developed a nasty habit of exploding. This is supposed to only affect unlicenced USB peripherals – but some are reporting otherwise.

Some users are experiencing issues with Guitar Hero controllers not working after the update, and a small set of licenced Mad Catz controllers are no longer working. don’t worry though, those horribly expensive fight sticks you imported work just fine. Also, Xbox 360 fans who’ve purchased those wildly expensive adapters to enable 360 controllers on the PS3 may be out of luck post patch.

According to Mad Catz the affected controllers are :

  • 2008 Wireless PS3 GamePad (Only the one released prior to 2008, current version in stores works fine)
  • 2008 Wired PS3 GamePad (Only the one released prior to 2008, current version in stores works fine)
  • PS3 Wireless MicroCon (Now discontinued)
  • Mad Catz will replace the controllers if they’re still under warranty, but good luck with that if you’re South Africa, as there’s no real local support for the brand. Do you have any controllers that no longer work on your PS3? Let us know.

Did you read the article? It’s for your protection. It’s all the cheap fake chinese controllers on ebay. They could explode so Sony took extra precautions just so they can’t get blamed for it…

Never heard of anyone being maimed or killed by an exploding controller. Wonder if Bin Laden has explored this avenue

The irony is that they will probably release a newer version of PS3 Jailbreak.

      So legit non-exploding controllers… don’t work.
      New Jailbreak.. works.
