PS3 and 360: Not nearly as powerful as they should be

Alex Kierkegaard has written a very interesting article on his website about how neither the PS3 nor the Xbox 360 are anywhere near powerful enough to do true HD gaming. Nor do we really need it in this generation.

A warning though it is long to read.

To put it in a nutshell when you go home today and turn on your DSTV or eTV you are watching a movie/show in 640X480. If you buy yourself a huge HDMI enabled TV and plug your PS3 into it you can play games at 1080p (much better?). Now you tell me honestly which one looks more realistic? It’s not all about the resolution and if game developers and consumers stopped worrying about it we might get better games faster.

Now go out and buy an Xbox 360, an HDTV and Tecmo’s Dead Or Alive 4. On your way back stop over at a Blockbuster and pick up a DVD for comparison — say Zhang Yimou’s 2004 movie Hero (a martial arts flick to go with the martial arts game). Go home, unpack and set everything up, and get ready for quite a shock.
