PSplus

One of the best things about being a PSN+ subscriber is the ability for your PlayStation to wake up in the middle of the night and update itself so that when you want to actually play a game it doesn’t take 2-3 hours to get into the game.

Well Sony has now seen fit to roll out this feature to all PSN subscribers, paying or not, which I think is a great move from Sony as they will definitely quieten one of the most common complaints about the PS3 with this update.

However this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stay a PSN+ member as the free games catalogue is easily worth every single penny dropped on the service and while I haven’t turned my PS3 on since GTA V was released it is something I will keep going back to so I can try work my way through that library.

Another feature added with this update (4.50) is the ability to now buy games via the web store and have them download while you are at work.

The PSN has been the weaker cousin of Xbox Live for a long time but it doesn’t look like Sony can make any mistakes at the moment and Microsoft are really going to have to buckle down if they want to keep up in this next generation.

The only thing that would suck if your not uncapped! Starts doing a gig update while you sleep, no thank you!

Uncapped is kinda a necessity. Any game you download for free of PS+ can be around 10 GIGs big.

No, but on a 4Mb line that would probably take you about a week?

Theoretically, you should be able to download about 43Gb a day on a 4Mb in a 24hour space IF your line runs at full capacity. But that never happens.

I guess that if I try and download Uncharted 3 it will probably take me three days. If I don’t download anything else.

Yeah, I used to have a 4 Mbps line and if memory serves, I got Killzone 2 (which was also around 40 GB) in about 5 days. But the line was shared between a couple of people, so it was quite congested.

That’s the biggest I’ve heard of. The biggest I tried was 16GB and that took a couple of days so yeah that makes sense.

That’s a bit of a naive view point. A lot of people in SA can’t get adsl because Telkom doesn’t want to install lines in those areas and so on. I know of a few people who want uncapped, but can unfortunately not get it.

Gavin forgot to mention that you can also use the auto update for patches etc. So instead of patching games and watching them break, just set your auto update to your current time, switch of the PS3. It will turn istelf back on and then do all your updates, trophy syncing etc in the backgorund. This way when it doe stop, you dont have to start that shit over.

I wouldn’t really call Killzone: Shadowfall being 50GB something done wrong. That is what you get when you get proper games on Blu-ray. Even PS3 exclusives were around 50 GB.

Touché! That is a valid point. However, I do think a 50 GB is do-able within a reasonable amount of time, even in SA, but it all depends on your ISP and ADSL.

They said already that you can start playing the game while the rest downloads. So you obviously don’t have to wait for the entire 50GB. It’s not just PS that has problems. Maybe you are a bit biased or you would have mentioned that XBOX also has problems as well as PS for instance.
