PS3 compares poorly to the 360 on Fallout 3 – According to the PlayStation Magazine

[Update] PSM(3) has come out to clarify this point. Apparently the PS3 version is SLIGHTLY worse than the 360 version and the difference is purely down to a slightly choppier framerate and the objects are jaggier/rougher in the distance, not to mention that they textures are muddier up close. The 360 version looks better but it’s not like the PS3 version is bad so if you only have a PS3 don’t panic you will still love the game.

I would like to also point out that this doesn’t contradict or change anything in the rest of this story.

Fallout 3

And here we go again another AAA cross platform title is being reported as looking better on the 360 and PC compared to the PS3.

What makes this even more believable is that this is being reported by PSM(3), in their very own words

“”Fallout 3’s world looks incredible, tinged by the chill of the desolate, post-apocalyptic emptiness. But sadly, the PS3 version compares poorly to it’s Xbox and Pc counterparts. It’s not a deal breaker, but clearly the PS3 wasn’t the lead platform – disappointing, since Oblivion looked better on the PS3.”

Can I get the usual complaints out of the way now not to waste time?

We can blame the bad / lazy / stupid developers who didn’t understand the platform except that these are the guys who did so well with Oblivion on the PS3…

How about we start up the conspiracy engine and say that Microsoft has paid Bethesda to make sure that the PS3 version looks worse.. well it would have to be a lot of money to make a company gimp their own product.

No I think the reality is a little simpler than that and a lot worse for Sony, the 360 and PC development processes are very similar and as such it makes sense to lead on the PC and port to the 360 and polish it then. However porting to the PS3 is a bit more difficult and seeing that the PC and 360 markets are substantially larger than the PS3 market which version do you think the developers are going to be spend more time on?

Can Sony fix this? I honestly don’t know, it is a worry and I am hoping that with the exclusives they have they can force a market change to ensure that the games keep on coming thick and fast to both platforms.

However if you are thinking of getting Fallout 3 and have a choice it has suddenly become obvious which version you should be getting.

IMO, Oblivion looked horrible on all platforms – the environments/buildings etc were good, but character models were a joke

Hmmmm I wonder how “poorly” it performs. I was iffy about getting the game in the first place but if it performs poorly ill be getting something else.

Looking worse is fine as long as the game runs fine in whatever state it is presented.

ps3 maybe more powerful, but it is harder to develop on and it would cost more to lead with. powerful isn’t always better. David vs. Goliath. Who cares about the specs its about the games. For me Fable, Left 4 Dead and Gears beats LBP, and Resistance. Socom sucks I’ve played it. xbox has got 3 potential games of the year and the ps3 has LBP(great game) and maybe Resistance but i doubt it. Plus xbox’s back catalog is the best. Right now i can’t justify getting a ps3 especially with all this talk of multiplatform games being better on the 360. Plus bioshock has been out for over a year on the xbox so don’t act like it is an exclusive.

The 360 has better GPU.. and thats just the way it is, and the way its allways been… (yes the PS3 has a much more powerful cpu… but thats does not help the fact that it has a “not so sharp” gpu.. with only 256 mb ram (360 has 512.. and some other features”..

But hey… The PS3 is way better on Folding at home… Think about that the next time you chose a console… gameconsole ? or foldingconsole 🙂

I don’t agree, I would rather say that MS’s tools are better known because a lot of the libraries are shared between Windows and 360. If OPENGL and Linux were more widely accepted, nobody would complain about the tools.

COD4, Burnout Paradise, GTA4 are all proof of what is possible with cross platform developing. Maybe the talent is lacking at other developers?

Get it for PC if you got a gaming PC. Why bother with a more expensive and crappy looking console version.

PSM3 article concerning this where they explain the review. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=199997&site=psm

If you look at some of the other titles with huge worlds comming for PS3 one can see that it is just crappy port and that if the devs had more tallent they could most likely pull off a better looking PS3 version. Anycase, its done and anyone owning both PS3 and 360 will rather get the 360 version, else get the one for your platform or get it for PC if you got a good rig.

But Sony marketing told us the PS3 was more powerful so it must be! I mean look at the Killzone movie they showed 3 years ago…

They probably did lead with the PS3…ask anyone who develops for both platforms, you lead with the weak platform so you are sure everything works at least as well on the more powerful.

I like my PS3 b/c of the japanese support, but seriously…gimped GPU, split memory, and inferior dev tools do not a better platform make.

The PS3 will always play blurays better than the 360 though (smile). Seriously, I bought the the ps3 50% for playing blurays on my 1080 tv, and 50% for gaming, and it’s does a great job at both. And it’s also doing great at showing the thousands of photos and home movies I have. I’m disappointed that the developer didnt make the effort to make the ports equal, but Uncharted was great, WipeoutHD is georgous at 60fps, 1080 rock solid, and i’ve spent 250 hours on Oblivion so far (haven’t even closed any gates yet) and that does look better on the PS3. So i’m happy, and I wasn’t sure i’d be buying Fallout3 anyway, too many other games coming out and not enough time/money to play all of them.

Um… hate to tell ya but resistance 2 and gow are going to pretty much even each other out. I never liked fable or got what the big deal was. Run around in fairy land like and elf didn’t appeal to me. 2nd, yeah we got l4d on the 360 but you forgot Metal GEAR SOLID 4 – Best game ever imho. And Killzone 2! Oh yeah and lik you said LBP which I have but haven’t played yet. And finally, I got this game on the ps3 just like all others because of 2 reasons… 1. PS3 is more reliable and I want to keep all my games on the same platform (5 years from now I’ll be playing ps1, 2, and 3 games on the same box) and 2. I can use my fragfx on it and have a mouse! Microsoft won’t let splitfish build a fragfx or any other mouselike controller so control is the main issue for me.

This is one of many great links that adress the theory of the ps3 being more powerful. Its relatively even handed to boot 😉
Also in the graphics section there is a pretty decent explination of why games released on multi-platform are currently looking better “generally” on the 360.
Honestly only reason right now to pick a console would have to be what exclusives you wish to play. The rest is just rabbid fanboi’ism for shame 😛

For those who dont know the PS3 is more powerful, being it has 7 processors and the 360 has 3. Also, computers didnt even have that many when the PS3 came out so I would say that it is more powerful when the 360 came out before it. To wrap it up, rumor is that GTA5 may be and exclusive for the PS3 because they want to add all the GTA maps and add new things to the gameplay that would ONLY!!!! be possible on the PS3, which then proves more powerful. Oh I forgot to say that PS3 has dual nividia ultra graphic cards and 360 has ati graphics. In 2009 the PS3 will lead with more exclusives coming out. PS3 owners get ready to shine. Trophy system mandatory for every game starting 2009. The xbox will come out with another console and PS3 will still be sucking up everything around because it was announced that the PS4 would pertain everything the PS3 has just with a new price and a few extra possible things. To me that sound like sony thought pretty far ahead, thats why their not worried.

This whole PS3 is more powerful is old now, cause that’s the only argument the PS3 has.Think we all know it aint exactly bout how powerful the console is anymore(Wii?), it’s about the experience and the MS(as F-Up as they are) has done a pretty good job with the 360. Give pros when pros are due. This is good for the market, keep them on their toes, which means better games for us gamers.

No Alex I have played ps3 and xbox 360 versions and can certainly say that the xbox 360 version has better anti-aliasing, loads quicker, has better draw distance and it not very glitchy compared to the ps3 version. What you are talking about with disc space does not have any effect on how the game renders and produces graphics. It CAN have an effect on the texture resolution, however, because higher resolution textures means more data and more space needed. But, in the case of nearly every games developer, they made one set of textures and aren’t using blu-ray as a reason to make higher resolution textures. Also I should point out that fallout 3 on xbox 360 is only 5.4 GB big but the disc space is 6.8 GB. There is room for higher resolution textures which they just didn’t put in.

The framerate and picture is clearly superior on the PS3 and no one save someone with a serious personality disorder can defute that. I mean can you really lie to yourself? Maybe if Fallout 3 was on HD DVD it would be better…oh wait I forgot XBOX discontinued the initiative. After lowering the price 40% of course two months earlier. hahah Microsoft treats its costumers like whores. Pay for the internet server service too hahaha. Not to mention the C+ RPG’s Square Enix sells off to Xbox that PS3 obviously has no desire to pick up. Granted, PS3 has had its hyped up games as well, but the amount of hype behind Halo and Fable was just astronomical. I remember the dude at EB games trying to sell me the collector edition of Fable. Srry PS3 fanboys, who woreship the cell-processor, but except for exclusive games (like MGS4), the 360 wins, hands down.

Another thing that i notice that i play twice as much on my xbox360 than on my ps3 just because of the great service you get with xbox live, and the NXE is just an amazing menu to use. Alright, you have to pay 50 bucks for one year of awesome online gameplay, but it is nothing compared to online gaming on ps3.(I also play 50 bucks a year for my rapidshare accaunt, to dll all my pc-games, movies, appz, and so on)), so 50 dollars IS NOT A LOT OF MONEY.

Second: Just so you all know there are add-ons (or expansions (whatever)) for the fallout on the Xbox 360 and for the PC so I say you should go for the xbox version or PC becuase how would not like expansions for this good game, also I read about a download for fallout on the PC called “G.E.C.K” (you all know what that is) wich is like a Fallout editor and I think thats pretty cool.

I just want a reliable console that won’t die on me after a year (insert 54% failure rate of xbox 360s).

I don’t care too much about which has the fastest GPU or the prettiest graphics (xbox 360 or PS3, who cares?). I’m an old school gamer, I used to play text based RPGs and some of the more atrocious looking things on the Spectrum. So no, graphics do not mean that much.

What does mean a lot, is as I said, reliability, quality of games and whether or not the system will keep me entertained.

Anyway, Playstation magazine (PSM) is owned by Microsoft. If you believe anything those sods say, you’re probably retarded, much in the same way if an Xbox magazine was owned by Sony, I’d take whatever it said with a heavy dose of consumer scepticism.

The only thumbs up I can give is that my PS3 hasn’t died on me yet and I never had any probs with it. Something I can’t say about my X-Boxes. I’m on my 3th Xbox at the moment.. If this one dies, I’ll never buy a 360 again and gladly accept lesser framerates of Xbox (microsoft) games that are ported to my rocksolid PS3. ^^
