PS3 Exclusive Heavenly Sword Made Ninja Theory No Money

If ever there was an argument for 3rd party exclusives being stupid, this is it. Ninja Theory, the fellows behind PS3 exclusive action game Heavenly Sword have revealed that despite selling over one and a half million copies of the lauded title they’ve yet to break even.

"It’s difficult. Heavenly Sword came out pretty early on the PS3, and we sold, I think, a million and a half copies, and that’s still not enough as an independent studio to break even," said Ninja Theory co-founder and game designer Tameem Antoniades.

"The publisher potentially breaks even at that point, but the developers don’t," he explained. "It’s just that when so many people have Xbox — I mean over half the market or more has Xbox 360s — why limit yourself to one platform?"

It makes sense then that the developer’s next project, Enslaved, will be heading to the PS3 as well as the Xbox 360 – and that’s a good thing too, because it’s actually looking pretty good. It just makes sense for 3rd party studio to develop multiplatform – unless given truckloads of money by platform holders, of course. the more people that play your game, the better.

Heavenly Sword was released early in the PS3’s life – and while it was a very polished, and pretty well received, I can’t say I enjoyed it much. At least it was better than Lair.

Am I the only person who is stunned that such a garbage game sold so well? I borrowed HR a few weeks after I got my PS3 and thought it was rubbish.

ARE YOU ALL FREAKING MAD! Heavenly Sword Was MAGNIFICENT! I  that game, it was so well executed and brilliantly story driven, I have yet to see any game’s acting and facial animation come even close to what that managed to do.

Look class, it’s a Heavenly Sword fan. This is a rare species indeed, given the lack of depth to the combat system, the needless implementation of Six-asis, the annoying voice on the main character, and the over mediocrity of everything in the game apart from the graphics. A special sighting indeed.

Never had a PS3 when this game came out.
Yet I don’t feel like I’m missing anything.

I might have gotten it for Xbox (at the time[If it was MultiPlat]) coz I was looking for a hack&slash around then.

Just as a side thought, after reading this.

If GT5 does come out soon will it be able to turn profit?
Even if it sell 2x or 3x more than this game… is that enough to cover cost of 5+ years of Dev and turn mega profits?

they sold 1.5 million copies and made over 100 million dollars in revunue, seriously, this reeks of bad management, alot of games sell less than that and are still profitable, if you want to use the golem to motion cap ur game , expect to pay heavy losses.

GT5 costs were 60 million stated publically, which is probably 80 million at the moment because of delays GT prologues has sold 4.6 million units and has mitigated the huge dev cost, GT5 will have to sell more than 2.5 million to make a substantial profit. But reports claim that gt prologue paid most of the dev costs

GT5 will be the true console seller. That why they release close to Xmas. Think about… 3 months later… BAM 3 million games sold

Ah but you’re forgetting, Microsoft will retaliate by perma-banning 3 million xboxes from Live, thus ensuring 3 million retard sales (just in time for Halo: Here we go again!).

The game was rather crap to begin with. Apart from the pretty cinematics, there wasn’t any core experience there.

Gameplay was really watered down in comparison to other titles in the genre.
