PS3 Firmware 1.82 coming soon

The latest firmware update for the PS3 is coming soon.

Version 1.82 is going to give PS3 owners the ability to playback AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files… That seems to be it…

Now since I don’t know what a H.264 file is maybe I am on the wrong track here but it seems a bit strange to release a new update for one type of video file…

It just makes things confusing, can a 1.81 version play online against a 1.82 version? Does it force you to update? Why not just pile them all together a do a quarterly update instead? It would seem to make more sense really.

Why couldnt they wait 1 week to bundle this into 1.81!!! Another 110MB download for H.264 codec playback compatability. That basically is the same codec format that HD-DVD uses to encode their movies if I am not mistaken and perhaps WMV playability?

    Weird !

I’d take that with a pinch of salt. H.264 ( High Def quicktime MOV files ) has been supported for a loooong time. I think since PS3s inception actually, but I could be wrong. I currently encode game trailers to H.264 and they work just fine

I forgot to add – After an update is ” published “, at your next sign on, it forces that update. You cant play online till you have updated

The Good – makes sure your entire base is on the same level, hence easier to support
    The Bad – it’s annoying !

Having said that, I’m all for updates. 1.80 showed just how much a little code can go a long way
