PS3 Firmware 2.17 released

[Update]The official PlayStation blog has been updated and it has been confirmed that version 2.17 does nothing more than stabilise the operating system.
[/Updated]

So it has been a while since firmware 2.10 was released for the PS3 and people have been wondering when the next one would arrive.

Well it’s here, 2.17 is now available to download (no idea what happened to the other 6?). So what does it include.

Well so far it appears that it doesn’t add anything to the PS3 at all. It has some security updates, some stability and performance updates and that is about it.

It is 119Mb so if you don’t need to update I would recommend against doing it, it just seems pretty pointless all round?

However if you feel the need or have nothing better to do you can either upgrade through the PSN or click the links below to get the updates

    119mb?
So essentialy this update doesn’t include any new sounds or graphics or stuff like that, its just lines of programming code they added. How on earth do they get to 119mb of lines of programming code? Lazy, have any suggestions since you dabble daily in the arts of software development?

@SlippyMadFrog, I have to admit I have no idea how they do that. There must be a lot of code inside of it.

As an example my latest project that I have started has roughly 7000 lines of code at the moment. Before compiling and with all the user interfaces and the rest it is only 8Mb. The code only takes up about 500Kb of that as well, the rest is images and helper files

Sounds like you are using C#. Our company is busy migrating from a mainframe system to a C# with Msoft SQL server. Its a great language considering what we used to code in.

Anywho, I reckon they have to redownload the whole module they altered since I don’t think you can just “plug-in” new code into an existing module. Or it has soemthing to do with the super advanced cell architecture? 😉

Its big cos every update is the entire history of updates.
Ie someone updating for the first time, would recieve all the things such as divx ect!

Tried to post this yesterday, but like all firmware upgrades the new one has to include everything for every previous firmware version. As Abe says: Someone who buys a PS3 now only has to install the latest firmware release to get all the goodies.

@Abe and Banana hammock, sorry that doesn’t actually make sense… Well it makes sense but it’s the worst possible way to do it..

Rather just allow the user to download the latest patch, the latest patch can then check the firmware version running and if required it can then download the missing pieces.

Imagine how big this patch is going to be in 2 years time?
