That scheduled PS3 maintenance yesterday? that was to prepare the system for 3D, apparently.The PSN is now serving 3D games, with the first 3 available today, and a demo coming tomorrow.
If you’ve already jumped on the 3D TV bandwagon, you’ll be able to download 3D enabled versions of WipEout HD, SuperStardustHD and PAIN, with a 3D-enabled demo of MotorStorm: Pacific Rift tomorrow.
- WipEout HD in 3D does not include the Fury DLC
- PAIN includes two new modes created specifically for 3D called Alien Toss and Ice Blocks which is free with the TV pack, or individually
- SuperStardust HD in 3D promises to “transport you into a spectacular space settingâ€
- MotorStorm 3D Pacific Rift Demo includes the single player race around the Kanaloa Bay
“PlayStation has always been about outstanding entertainment,†said SCEE president Andrew House. “The stereoscopic 3D Collection showcases the depth of technology behind PS3 and gives us a feel for the potential for future releases.â€
“Stereoscopic 3D technology coupled with the likes of PlayStation Move motion controller allows us to create an ever more compelling, realistic and immersive experience. Add to that our online capabilities, community interaction features, our film and music services and you’ve got a very exciting proposition for the future of home entertainment.â€
If you already own those games, a free patch will bring them to you in 3 whole dimensions, and they’ll also be bundled should you purchase one of Sony’s shiny knew 3D Bravia TVs. It’s become increasingly evident how Sony’s used the Ps3 to push their other tech on the consumer – starting with Blu-ray. It worked out pretty well for that HD media format, but I’m doubtful 3D gaming – a gimmick i’m not yet convinced by – will catch on that much – this gen at least.
It’s going to be pretty difficult to convince people to replace the large HD TV’s they’ve recently bought.

They have booths set up with 3D Bravias aorund the world cup ticketing centres in the world cup host cities or at least in mine anyways. Go check it out its pretty cool. Im thinking of getting one next year but mostly for movies. I think the gaming will be a little bonus.
I was also wondering if this would be a flop like you Geoff but then you see Nintendo announcing a 3DS and Microsoft teaming up with LG to bring 3D to Xbox and the entire Blu Ray group getting in on the act and it looks like its here to stay. Also it was posted on N4G that VIVID and other porn companies approached Sony about a 3D porn deal. If its got the porn industry interested then you know its gonna be big 😆 It will be slow going like Blu Ray was and still is but at the end of the day its a nice addition and feature to use every once in a while. Im sure everyone will be tempted as prices come down in the years to come.

My theory is that this new rumoured Xbox slim might also have a change in the HDMI port from 1.2 to 1.3 or 1.4 the latter of which seems better equiped for 3D. I dont see all the big players getting into this without some sort of confidence in the future of 3D television and gaming.
@Werner:The only rumoured price drop so far has been the Sony Lifestyle site listing a $199 dollar PS3 but take that with a pinch of salt for now because a $100 price cut is a bit big. That might just be a typo or Someone at Sony might be getting fired for letting the cat out before E3. I was expecting Sony and MS to package Natal and Move and keep current pricing but hey what do i know. I do expect all three to make price cuts at E3 which can only be a good thing for the industry.
