Home Gaming PS3 is just an expensive promise

PS3 is just an expensive promise

This posting was made by Doobiwan from Gamerza and I thought he hit on a lot of very good points and would love to hear your points on this?

————————————————

Lets talk facts then shall we, here’s opinion based on fact, not some brainwashing page ranker trying to feltch your wallet:

HD video?
Who ****ing cares. I’m not fighting a movie format war on a GAMES console to line some corporate’s pocket. HD constitutes less than 2% of the home movie market! Then benefit is MINIMAL over DVD when it comes to the overall enjoyment of the product, my life is no less enriched without it. My console is for games, thank you. If/when I decide to do HD movie I’ll do it when there’s a clear format winner, and a stand alone player costs me less than R2k.

The 360 wins here FOR ME because I’m not forced into spending on something that is unnecessary, not because it supports either format. Others may view things different, and boys there’s the difference. Just because I have a solid reason for not liking something doesn’t automatically make me a fanboy (I do other things for that )

Reliability?
1st/2nd gen 360 Reliability sucks rocks. Sure, I’ll admit it. Do I care? No, it has been addressed. I’ve never had a problem and now have a 3 year warranty. I can take it back to the store and swap it out in minutes. Should new buyers worry? No, the new pro/elite PAL ‘zephyrs’ all have the upgraded thermals and internals. It may not be the 65nm yet, but the problem has been addressed.

What’s more important is Why do you want one? Because . .

Games…
games.games.games.games.games.games.

The PS3 has games, sure it does, we know that, even a couple of fun exclusive ones. But, the 360 just has more, it has better, and it has cheaper games. It’s got AAA’s it’s got XBLA’s. It’s got them coming out of it’s ears. Mature games, Kids games, sports games, Arcade games. Hundred of great games. Sony promises a lot, and maybe they’ll deliver in time, but so far (I’m talking the last 10 years) they very often fall short of their promises. At the very least, for now ie 2007+, The xbox is the better platform for games.

Online games.
It also has absolutely kick a$$ online. Maybe the PS3 will catch up, but it’s still waiting. Home, may or may not appeal to you. FOR ME it seems to be an unnecessary layer I’d have to get through to get to my game, but I’ve never used it so I could be wrong. Warhawk and UT3 look like good starting points for PSN, but it still has a way to go.

Interface
The controller is the bit that binds man and machine, it’s the reason the Wii is a revolution. In my Opinion the 360 controller makes the SIXAXIS look like a throwback to a bad chinese made PSone ripoff. It’s better built, more ergonomic, has better battery management (external batteries) and I think rumbles more important than motion.

Other features:
The other stuff is really not that important, the consoles are for all intents and purposes on on par technically – the differences people will see will be more due to art direction than technical prowess. And once again both look great, it’ll be a content issue, not a console issue.

As far as 7.1 lossless audio goes? Same thing. I promise you the effect, especially for gaming, is no different to 5.1 and that’s if you’ve got more than R100k to spend on speakers alone. It’s a meaningless bullet point, like an 10 megapixel camera – who the heck cares, when you print the thing on A1 it looks the same as a 6mpx picture.

Media Centre?
Once again, if you’re buying a games console who cares? IPTV? also unless you have ADSL 2 it’s meaningless. On the other hand, if the likes of Telkom, AT&T, BT and Deutche Telekom start bundling 360s with their IPTV services, then Sony’s got something to think about.

Those are facts dude. Solid tangible facts. PS3’s is a big pile of really expensive promises at the moment.

Wow that was the most thought out, completely brilliant argument there Brian, you must make the PS3 fanbois really happy over at the camp. Doobiwan is correct at the moment it is expensive empty promises, when it does get some decent games and drops to a reasonable price I will probably pick one up, but at this precise moment no thanks.

Lol @ Brian, I guess he bought the wrong console so now he’s feeling sore about it 😛

Doobiwan brings up lot’s of good arguments and facts, although all of which can be argued since everyone is not the same, I know my cousin for example bought the PS3 for it’s media capabilities “and it plays games”.

on the games front 360 is dominating the next gen market. PS3 will get to that stage we’ll probably see a huge selection of games near the end of 2008.

As for the controller story I’ve always preferred the 360 I have no legit argument all I can say is “it just feels better”

Doobiwan every point you make can be viewed from the other side.
    Lets see:

I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again, Doobiwan etc etc. Your ilk make sweeping unfounded accusations. The guys, like me – that enjoy their PS3’s, have chosen to do so based on the facts, because the PS3 has that and more going for it. It may have 2 generations of support to help its currently struggling client base but it is thanks to quality products and reliability that it has been the mainstay of the local gaming market for the last 10 years.

I could continue in this vein but rather I will tackle the hardware and software issues you brought up.

    HD video?
Who ****ing cares? Would you still being saying this if the Console price was R2000 cheaper? Sure the primary reason for a gaming console is to play games, but why not have something more? I suppose it comes down to personal preference. Something which I wish certain members of this community would learn about. In your eyes “The benefit is MINIMAL over DVD when it comes to the overall enjoyment of the product” however speak to someone with a nice 42″ and I’m sure you will find that the difference is more than just minimal. As you say your console is for games, however mine is for games as well as movies and that was my choice.
The one thing that troubles myself as a PS3 owner is that Bluray might not even win the war, but I am fairly confident it will and that was an investment which I chose to make.

The PS3 wins here FOR ME because I decided to invest in a great piece of technology which in my opinion makes my console more than just a games station. Just because I have a solid reason for choosing my platform doesn’t automatically make me a fanboy.

    Reliability?
1st/2nd gen 360 Reliability sucks rocks. It really does even Doobiwan will admit it. Does he care? No, but he should. Yes it may have been addressed, but personally I would rather not have to go through the effort. Sure some people may never have the problem and they now even have a 3 year warranty. This was actually the main thing that steered me away from the Xbox, I dont want a faulty machine, pure and simple.

What’s more important is Why do you want one? Because . .

Games as well a wireless media solution.

Hundred of great games this is due to the fact that the Xbox is three times older than the PS3. Sony promises a lot, and hopefully they’ll deliver in time, in fact a few great title are already hitting our shores in the coming weeks and today the PS3 got its first 100% game rating.
I’ll admit that right now ie 2007+, The xbox is the better platform for games.
But if you have the cash I would still tell anyone to rather invest in the PS3.

    Online games.

It also has absolutely kick a$$ online. And again hopefully the PS3 will catch up, but again it is a case of time frame and I will refer again to the Xbox being three years older than the PS3. Home, may or may not appeal to you. Admittedly I dont know that much about Home and I cant say I think it looks that interesting, but I’ve never used it so I could be wrong. Warhawk and UT3 look to be two stellar good points for PSN, and RFOM has a good lag free gaming experience as well as Motorstorm.

    Interface

The controller is the bit that binds man and machine, it’s the reason the Wii is a revolution. In my Opinion the PS3 controller makes the XBOX’s uninspired controller look like a under developed standardised control. Many feel that the Xbox’s controll is better in many ways including an ergonomic design however I feel in one way the PS3 controller wins is that it has better battery management (external batteries SIFF !) Many people are devided over rumble versus motion sensing. Again I think it comes down to personal preference. Sure Rumble is cool and it is lacking in PS3 titles however motion sensing is a clever innovation which does excite me and besides the rumbling SIXAXIS hits Japans shore in October.

    Other features:

The other stuff is important, the consoles are for all intents and purposes on on par technically however it is my opinion that the PS3 is the superior machine. Once the PS3 title starting reaching their third gen games as the Xbox is now, it will no content issues but rather console issues that will see the PS3 triumph.

As far as 7.1 lossless audio goes? Its better than the Xboxes audio goes and that is that! Sure you might need a super staunch sound system to really hear the difference, but some people will and do own these systems and for them the PS3 is king.
On a slightly off topis note, Doobiwan do you know anything about Camera’s there is a million miles difference between 10mpx and 6mpx at that size.

Media Centre? Once again, if you’re buying a games console who cares?
But if you are buying a games console with media needs then it makes a big difference. I dont know much about the whole IPTV thing and so I will refrain on commenting on it and automatically succeed the point to Doobi.

Those are facts dude. Solid tangible facts. PS3 may be the more expensive of the consoles, but once again and I stress this it comes down to personal preference. That is what this whole lenghty thing is all about.
    PERSONAL CHOICE AND FREEDOM.
That is my right and I chose the PS3 because I believe it to be the better machine

imo this article is too biased to be taken seriously.

he even says the RRoD issue isnt a big deal and is nothing to worry about. idk why its considered bad when it happens then…..

and EVERY console lacks games when it comes out.

    360 controller is opinion.

ps3 online has no lag(that ive seen) and is FREE. i see nothing bad about that. and also, ut3 is expected to have cross platform play ONLY for the ps3/pc.

and I f*cking care about HD video. and anybody now who owns a ps3 and isnt interested will automatically have a bluray player once hd becomes more standard. and bluray is winning as of now according to the 2:1 sales ratio that has been going on.

besides how easy it is to swap hdd’s. and the fact that i can install linux, making it a computer. and the included wifi. and the CELL processor(i know its cliche’, but its true)

and dev’s are now starting to use the cell to stream textures and take a TON of load off of the gpu. the ps3 has it all, more power(which will lead to better graphics), extra INCLUDED features, standard hdd’s, and motion control. it feels tacked on now, but it also hasnt been focused on much. i know folklore’s use of it is VERY enjoyable, and lairs very well could be too.

all im saying is, both consoles have good points, and being biased doesnt help. fanboy.

p.s. i own 360 and ps3 and while i do favor the ps3 over the 360, i enjoy both on a regular basis. i was just demonstrating how ridiculously skewed views can be in regards to this situation. fanboys make me mad…really mad.

    WRONG.

@Eric – I own a PS3 too but have you considered that you cannot play PS3 games on a LAN? Yip, no system link like ALL X360 games. Thats why you cannot have a PS3 LAN @ Rage with mostly no PS3 games available that have such a LAN feature.

I purchased 3 BR movies when I got the PS3, now I dont really see anything new on the market in SA for over 5 months! Maybe 300 is the latest movie I can think of.

Like Doobi said, games make or break a console and thus far Sony hasnt delivered what they promised. 2008 will hopefully see this change but for now I only have Tekken 5 & fl0w to entertain me.

I don’t read this article saying Xbx 360 is and always will be better than PS3, i read it saying today it’s better. Not because it’s a superios piece of technology, but because it has more favourable points AT THIS TIME.

OK, on point 1, HD: I personally DO care about HD and so do tons of other people out there because frankly, if you can afford a 50″ 1080p HDTV you sure as heck are gonna want to use that puppy to it’s full potential. Why settle for DVDs (upscaled or not) if you can have something better?

2 Reliability: Agree on this. We’ve all probably read the article about the stress test that the PS3 was put through and it came out fresh as a daisy. MS did a pretty big disservice to it’s customers by continuing to use the same manufacturing process knowing full well that the internet was cluttered with reports of RRODs.

3,4: Agreed also. PS3 is gonna have some top titles in future. Mature – Killzone 2 and ‘less’ mature – LittleBigPlanet. Both seem like console clenchers to me.

5 Interface: This one goes down to preference.

6 Other features: Again depends on preference. If you’re an audiophile the smallest, most minute difference in audio quality is gonna affect you. But for the most part, people can’t tell the difference.

7 Media: Well I care about IPTV. 🙂 That’s IF (a pretty big ‘if’) Telkom can give it to us for a reasonable price.

@DriftZilla – Yes, I think that XBox has more support from developers and has more games etc, and there’s no doubt that at the moment it is ahead.

But, those damn XBox’s keep breaking! I think they cut back on manufacturing/testing time so as to get a head start on sony. And sure it’s paid off, but with all the consoles breaking, in the end, has it really?

Yes, Xbox is cheaper, has a wider install base, at the moment has better games, nice and easy to use, has it’s uses as a heater in winter. Is it the better console? I don’t think so.

I love the smell of flamebait in the morning 😉

Thanks for the comments everyone, even Brian, that was beautiful and insightful.

As the first paragraph clearly state’s this ‘article’ – it was a response to some typically inane comments – is that this, is in fact an opinion. I fully expect some people to disagree, that’s doesn’t make them wrong, because it’s just that, an opinion. If everything was black or white, we’d all be eating vanilla ice-cream and driving toyota’s.

When I say ‘based on fact’ once again that’s all it is, is the basis of my argument. For example:
“The PS3 library is limited at the moment and the future exclusives to not appeal TO ME, however the games on the 360 do.” which is why I, as in me, prefer the 360 at this time. If however You’re not a fan of say, shooters, Sci-Fi, whatever, and you eat, sleep, dream Final Fantasy, MGS and Gran Tourismo then you will prefer the PS3. That’s lovely, enjoy, I wish you well to play them.

The same goes for opinion on audio, on HD movies everything.

Contrary to what many people believe, I’m not a PS3 hater, it just, at it’s current price makes no sense for me. Even if next year the world decides the PS3 is the way to go and it starts to outsell the 360, and or Wii. “I”, that’s me the guy writing this post, not you the guy reading it, prefer the content that’s due on the 360. If one day it hits the same prices as the PS2 I may even pick up a PS3 if I feel the games warranty it and I have the time between PC, 360 and Wii.

PS3 supporters seem to be totally offended by the fact that people have different views on what constitutes value in a console, and all I would suggest is that they consider tempering their views based simply on the sales figures.

And stop freaky out like little girls at the slightest mention of the 360.

When I discuss something with someone, I expect people to formulate thoughts and respond with a smidgen of personal insight which evolves the discussion.

Taking my post, Replacing “360” with “PS3” and putting a NOT in every sentence does not constitute an insightful argument.

The whole argument about HD is so subjective. Clearly all PS3 owners also have 50″+ Sony Full HD Bravia’s and state of the art 7.1 Full HD Dolby Digital sound systems, they have eyes that can see every nanometer of details and ears that can hear the whole audible range of sound!!

Come now, get real. Most people cant afford to regularly buy Blu-Ray movies and dont have HD TV’s. All they want to do is game. They have a DVD player already. The Xbox360 lets you game, the PS3 let you wait for the next big title to come out!!

Thus PS3 is a promise!!! Simple!

Why? Well, the truth is a person’s opinion is not the basis for an argument. “I like eggs” is an opinion, you can’t argue that no, in fact I don’t like eggs 😀 . You follow? grr… you all poofs… both consoles are equal… and both consoles have the SAME sales… i mean that by the fact that @ say 4 or 5 months they sold the same about of console…

EVERY thing is in relation to another, that means, there’s NO god dam winner as of yet…
the thing is, you can’t be so subjective like this, thats why racism is a big problem… so what we think and say, are two EVERY different things… it is a new kind of bigotry… Fanboyism…

I hate bigots, and i hate fanboys the most, which makes me a bigot, and a fanboy hater fanboy 🙂

But seriously people, GROW UP! gees, most of you are like 16-35 years old, which means, you old enough to have a job… but you aint mature enough to accept others…

Errrrrm, scotty, weren’t you the one that said in a comment a few days ago that you’re a self confessed PS3 fanboy? And now you say you hate fanboys the most?

Anyway, I personally think the PS3 is gonna come out of it’s shell next year. This year the 360 and Wii have won the battle but there’s gonna be some pretty sweet titles coming to PS3 in future. If I have the cash, I’m definitely gonna pick one up.

Next post is gonna be #50! Is that a record here?

Well i have both consoles and unfortunately at the moment my PS3 collects dust, looks of dust (damb shiney blackness) mabey in time there will be ps3 games that pull me from my 360 (there had better be this thing wasnt cheap) but at the moment and even leading up to christmas the 360 line up is just so strong i sometimes feel i should just put my PS3 back in its box.

this blog post has 2 b the most anal i’ve seen on the net.

doobiwank said on prophecy his only experience with the ps3 is 15 minutes at a shop so his opinion is biased and subjective and doesn’t count for jack. but the ps3 obviously worries him, as he sure does spend a lot of time pissing on it. else why would he care?

but then again who cares what he or this blog thinks. they both noobs on the scene. and ironically, they both fat.

SublimeEffect, well from the 53 posts the majority either agree with him or at least argue against him with a bit of logic and intelligence.

You unfortunately feel it’s better to call him fat… that’s fantastic :D…

    Thanks for reading…

Now Let me take a look…

first off i’d like to say that that article does contain more fact than opinion and the ppl who are arguing and saying its biased are the biased ones and probably didnt even read the article

lets take abes first response(i doubt hes ever even played on a 360) for egsample…
every single point he made can be argued by just looking up at the article and seeing what doobiwan said about it

    what i say about things

    HD video
most ppl dont even have an HDtv anyway and as he said”who ****ing cares”

    reliability
my 360 has never had a single problem at all.sometimes i wonder if all the “360’s reliability is horrible” stuff is even partly true

    games
he pretty much said it all

    online games
on the 360, you go to online battle select quickmatch and viola you’re playing
you have gamerpoints and reps etc to extend that.what more could you want

    interface
the 360 controller is solid reliable and so easy to use you feel like you’re a pro before you even start the game
the sixaxis, most of the time its just used as a desperate attempt to make the games look and sound cooler so more pple will buy them, its normaly not even fully used

    other features
the 360 has XBLA which is worth the R3,5k on its own

    media centre
    once again he said it

now dont get me wrong, i think the PS3 is a great console (though i do hate the fanboys who put up futile arguments for no reason) i just think that sony should stop hating their fans and keep their promises
