PS3 Marketing Deemed False

58 second read

The ASA has declared that a PS3 advertisement that was being displayed on the CNA website is in fact false advertising.

The complaint was lodged by 4 hardcore Xbox 360 gamers (S McDonald, Craig Nicholson, Gareth Seiler and L Goller) against CNA and SK Games.

The base of the complaint was on the following two lines

The PS3 is built on the revolutionary cell-processor, which is 8 times more powerful than most computers.”

AND

RSX Graphics Technology – twice as powerful as the most advanced graphics engine available today

Ster Kinekor and CNA where unable to validate these claims and after reviewing all the information ASA ruled that these claims are invalid and must be removed.

It looks like Ster Kinekor is not ready for competition this time around and will now need to be more careful about what they say when they advertise the PS3.

Why was this complaint not lodged by Microsoft themselves though, they shouldn’t be relying on consumers to lodge advertising complaints.

You can download the full ruling here.

I might be an Xbox 360 owner but it doesn’t mean I hate the PlayStation 3, I simply detest misleading advertising. Oh and I’m 30 btw.

In terms of the Folding@Home benchmarks, read the PS3 FAQ on the website to understand the performance ratings better. http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-PS3.html

At least this info is getting wide coverage on most sites now.In my own opinion, the SA public get’s misleaded by false advertising, causing them to buy something according to and ad that they saw, and then the info provided to them is false.I mean this is not the way to promote a product in SA.After all not everybody has got R6199 to spend on something, that the consumer feels is his best option, but meanwhile back at the ranch there are other options as well.

    @ tibby.dude – Childish… Bah I’m 27 ( L. Goller ), not seeing your reasoning here.

With your logic we should just allow advertisers to say whatever they want, when they want, without the need for them to ever substantiate anything.

Sounds great… I can see it now, ” Toyota Yaris – 325kw engine, 0-100 in 3.2 seconds, blah blah blah”

@ Lazygamer – Not sure where you get your info from, but yeah who said I was a hardcore 360 gamer anyway?

I love the Xbox 360, I might get a PS3 when they decided to price it reasonably and have some decent games for it. Right now it’s a waste of money in my opinion.

    @Tokyo – poetic license 🙂

Congrats on your ASA victory though, always good to see the consumers win one….
