PS3 price drop confirmed; 40GB pack revealed

So some big news coming out of Sony in the last couple of hours. Firstly the 60Gb PS3 has received a price drop and will now be 75 pounds cheaper than before… About R1000 hopefully for us (R5400).

Then if that isn’t good enough they have now announced a 40GB PS3 which will retail for the same price as the Xbox 360 Elite (R4400). However the 40GB model is not quite a fully functional as the 60GB. They have removed 2 USB ports, the memory card reader and ALL backwards compatibility. While I agree with there not being that much use for the backwards compatibility I can see a lot of disgruntled PS2 owners upgrading unless Sony advertises this properly.

So in the life cycles of the PS3 we have now seen a 20GB model, a 40GB, a 60GB and a 80GB…. anyone want to place bets on when we get to see the next model?

If you said instantly you may be right. Comnetslash is reporting that a 160GB model is being manufactured for Japan as we speak. However I wouldn’t put much hope in a 160GB, dual HDMI, triple ethernet port PS3 just yet.

So who is going to be picking up a 40GB unit? I can say it is the most attractive proposal that Sony has made yet and could well be the model that wins this Christmas rush. I wonder if how Microsoft are going to counter this?

I dunno… Sony is very clever, So I assume they planning for some big ass things… A ps3 @ the price of an elite? thats sounding like some competition to me hey… and the ps3 40gb might not have a big hard drive, but all it takes is a couple of R100’s and you got you’re self a 120gb Hard Drive… also that means, it costs less to upgrade the ps3 with a bigger hard drive then the xbox(those hard drives are DAMN pricey)

And with home coming to the ps3, there’s more reason to get one!

How can you even compare the 40GB to the Elite? 2 USB ports less, not card readers and a puny HDD in comparison plus no BC?

To me it sounds like they are DESPERATE to sell!

At the end of the the day, the nerfed PS3 is as lame an idea as the XBOX Core.

But also remember that the Core, SOLD! I know of quite a few people who will never connect to XBOX Live who picked up their Core’s on Cellphone contracts.

As crap as it sounds, it’s a good way to pick up people who can’t afford the PS3, especially around the silly season.

I think the new core (Arcade package) is actually a great deal for single player gamers. Same as this new less specced PS3… Either way though this is only good news for Gamers, however the PS3 now having a price drop twice in one year cannot be good for Sony’s bank balance.

Technically it’s one price drop for the US and one for the PAL territories. The US may still decide to follow suit tho.
I also dont think the price drop is hurting Sony that badly considering that they haven’t removed the Wifi. If they were really desperate I’m sure they would have removed this option.

I’m still a bit confused about the removal of the backwards compatibility. It should be free to put it in the console cause it’s software based but I guess it costs a fair amount to have a team of developers working on it. I wonder if this means that we wont see any more PS2 games added to the list of compatible titles??
