PS3 Price Drop?

The first rumours of another PS3 price drop are starting up and the new price for the 40GB being pushed around is $299… Now that would be a very good price.

However even the overly hopeful guys are only expecting this price drop to come into effect in January 2009, which is a very odd time to drop the price if you ask me.

If Sony did drop the price to under $300 before Christmas this year it would most probably hand them the holiday season on a golden platter. Can they afford it though?

I doubt it…

NO! Sony have too many losses to recover from financially.

I’m just wondering how Sony is going to manage beating Msoft in sales AND make money this gen. I know I know, Sony’s got a ten year plan but still, maybe Msoft got a 10 year plan as well.

Actually the Sony consoles are selling pretty well. People have accepted the price point and see value in it especially now with the HD-format wars over. They are either still making a loss on the console or barely breaking even so with decent sales there is no need to drop the price and further erode their profits.

Christmas will see many PS3s selling. It makes sense to drop the price after xmas and catch the people who can’t afford it. As long as there are some good titles being release around xmas and some good bundles, i’d say it’s a good move.

There will have to be some awesome titles (not neccessarily a AAA title, but something with mass appeal) out then. Xmas season is hot on the heels of Gears2.

They better drop the prise because before it was ridiculesly high. I have been waiting for a very long time for the chance to buy one and this just might be it.

A price cut always helps. If you ask me the wrtting is on the wall for the generation, Sony continues to out sell the xbox this year (however small it is still making up the sales). Unless MS does something extraordinary (which is not impossible), Sony will cripple them with a price decrease. Lets remember Sony aims to become more profitable by reducing the costs (there was an article on this site recently)

It won’t cripple them, because of their already large install base. But yes it will cripple their sales since the only reason you’d get a xbox is cos its cheaper than the PS3.

Also remember that price drops does not always mean a huge spike in sales. You have to consider if the market wants the product badly. This has been proven with toshiba pushing $100 HD DVD players and by the end of Jan ’08 they were still 50:50 against $400-$500 BD players.
