Over at the Sony Protection Group (Seriously?) they have put together a chart showing the first 24 months sales of the PS3 compared to the PS2 and PS1. As you can see in the chart the PS3 is outselling the PS1 by a mile and is close to the PS2 as well…
This goes to show the PS3 will dominate, well that is what they want you to believe. However the PS2 did not have any real competition and you can see by their own chart that the PS2 did not break the 7m mark until about 54 months (4 1/2 years) weeks (Just over a year). The Xbox 360 and Wii have already surpassed that in 18 months and 6 months respectivelly.

I think you got your timeline scale wrong, the PS2 broke the 7M mark in ~54 weeks and 190 months = 15.8 years (PS2 released in 2000). See http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e.html
