PS3Slim

Sony has confirmed over night at GamesCom that there is indeed a secret PS3 Slim in development and it will be hitting a store near you in the first week of September.

The PS3 slim is 32% smaller, 36% lighter, it consumes 34% less power and the real good news is that it’s about 30% cheaper as well.

Starting from today the PS3’s you see in the shop should now be priced at $299 or R2408 in a direct conversion. Or if we are converting from the new European price tag of EUR299 then we can expect to pay R3400.

Which would still work out to be around a R1000 price cut which is nothing to sniff at.

The new PS3 Slim has a 120Gb HDD and will arrive in the beginning of September at that same price point.

    Time to get me one!
Been wanting a PS3 for ages but having an Xbox was enough, and could never justify the price. Now at R1000 cheaper, it’s something worth getting considering my friends and family all have PS3’s and I can just loan games from them 😀

Now I have only one question, seeing that the ps3 have
slow bd read sped, and blue ray is now 3 years old, why did they not increase the read speed on the new model ?

Agreed… although I’m a little disappointed at the fact that it seems like all day I’ve tried to write stories that were already being covered  . Tu Che Boss man… you leave me dishonored and ashamed. :cwy:

Given its size, it’s probably using what is effectively a notebook BD drive which has a rotational speed limit of 24x (CD) It can only go so fast before noise/vibration become a problem

Are any of the local retailers going to be dropping their prices from today? Or is it going to take ages for the cut to take effect in SA?

Any news yet on SA price ? If memory serves the old gimped 40 gig models were 299 and they sold for R4500 in SA although I’m tipping it will come in at about R3999.00 with a game chucked in

why would they do that? why increase the cost of something that can’t really be utilised. developers cant really take advantage of the speed if older ps3 models dont have it

keeping is slow might actually prolong the life of the drive. over working the optical drive does damage it over time… ylod and probably cause of some 360 failures.

i’m just guessing, maybe some one can elaborate?

R3999 is still too steep. We need R3500 to make it feasible to the average South African.

When I purchased my Elite, the PS3 was retailing close to R7000 locally. Oh and it didn’t just have 2 games

And that brushed look for the slim looks so familiar
