PS3 Terms of Service Updated, Warns of 3D Risks

Sony has updated its Online Terms of service to include warning about the possible adverse effects of prolonged 3D viewing – and the dangers that 3D poses to you and your kin.

Effects include the obvious, usual suspects like headaches, eye strain, eye fatigue and nausea; but did you know that 3D could potentially damage the eyesight of those under 6. that aside, anything that tricks your eyes – and thus your brain – of seeing stuff that isn’t there, probably isn’t exactly good for you.

Terms of Service update:

"Some people may experience discomfort (such as eye strain, eye fatigue or nausea) while watching 3D video images or playing stereoscopic 3D games on 3D televisions. If you experience such discomfort, you should immediately discontinue use of your television until the discomfort subsides.
"SCEA recommends that all viewers take regular breaks while watching 3D video or playing stereoscopic 3D games. The length and frequency of necessary breaks may vary from person to person. Please take breaks that are long enough to allow any feelings of discomfort to subside. If symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

"The vision of young children (especially those under six years old) is still under development. SCEA recommends that you consult your doctor (such as a paediatrician or eye doctor) before allowing young children to watch 3D video images or play stereoscopic 3D games. Adults should supervise young children to ensure they follow the recommendations listed above."

Of course videogames and their systems have always shipped with warnings; Games can cause seizure, you know! Anyway, that cool tech that TV manufacturers are trying so hard to push down your throat is going to make you feel sick. Hooray for technology! Coupled with the fact that a large slice of the population has trouble viewing 3D at all, I can’t help but feel that home 3D is going to remain a bit of a niche thing for a while.
