PS3 trophy fan site blasts Sony – But they do raise a valid point

Ever since Trophy’s and gamer points were added to the PS3 fans have been trying to emulate the Xbox 360 gamercard’s on forums and websites alike.

Sony unfortunately hasn’t offered this functionality yet and as such sites like PS3TrophyCard have appeared and you can sign up to them and proudly display your latest trophies and gamer points to the world.

That was until last week, as according to PS3TrophyCard

“Sony has invested resources to actively work against sites like PS3TrophyCard.com which has made it impossible to update newer games with our current system”

Now I honestly cannot believe that Sony have intentionally gone out and blocked this websites ability to read new trophies and points. Granted they may not like what they are doing but Sony have a lot more important things to work on than trying to 51 693 players from bragging about the PSN… it just doesn’t make sense.

The thing is, since the PSN doesn’t have a publically accessible API and changes that Sony make to their system could inadvertently block these fan sites access to the system.

What Sony needs to do is copy the industry standard and open up some AIP’s for these calls so that they can work in conjunction with fan sites and not against them. I just hope they don’t take Microsoft’s cue on this one and make people pay for using the API which just screams cheap.

One last thing… At the moment Sony Europe does actually offer a gamercard service to it’s users which shows the trophies and points, how is it possible that one company can offer entirely different interfaces to their combined network in this day and age. Surely whoever is creating these gamercards for Sony Europe can just use that same code on the Sony American side?

its not only sony that tries to lock things down. apple are well known for being picky about what they allow… even dstv’s anal about their epg.

so i wouldn’t call it arrogance, just short sighted.
