PS4 pre-orders are through the roof

According to a post on Nowgamer the PlayStation 4 pre-orders for Shopto.net are through the roof, and they aren’t the only retailer who is expecting a windfall on the PlayStation release day.

James Rowson from Shopto has stated

“It’s unprecedented demand.

“It’s been the most successful console pre-order to date in our seven year history.

“It resonates with our customer base because we’re very much a hardcore gamers’ destination, so the launch of a new PlayStation or Xbox console was always going to be pretty strong for us.

“But it has been unprecedented in terms of numbers.

“On the actual reveal night our site traffic even at one in the morning was treble its usual traffic.

“We were bold and brave to put a preorder message on there, we were kind of on our own at that point.

“It also increased new registrations to our website as well as in people who’d not previously shopped with us who created an account just to place a preorder, so overall very successful and something we’ve been very pleased with.

“It’s been backed up by the various software titles, they’re doing well.

“Killzone and Watch Dogs are the two favourites but DriveClub’s been doing pretty well as well.”

But let’s look at the facts here, Shopto weren’t actually a real entity when the last round of console were released so any pre-order numbers they are getting are going to be breaking records. Shopto are a very hardcore retailer so the Wii-U never had a chance.

But across the pond in the land of the free, unless you want to board a plane then you are automatically a terrorist with C4 shoved up your rectrum… anyway where was I?

Oh yes in America Gamestop has a program which you can sign up for that will let you know when you can pre-order the PS4. So it’s like a pre-ordering system for pre-orders.. genius. Well that system now has 600 000 people on it waiting for the pre-order announcement.

I think it’s pretty obvious that the PlayStation 4 right now has captured the hearts of gamers and unless Microsoft pull a rabbit out of their hat at E3 I’m expecting the PS4 to dominate Christmas sales.

So have you pre-ordered it yet? I know BTGames is already taking pre-orders.

Nah, you forget pre-orders don’t require 100% upfront payment. Usually it’s like 10 bucks or something, at least that’s how it was with the PS3, and it’s games.

I’ve soured towards the practice of pre-ordering. While, I think it’s good that there’s this surge for the PS4 (leaving Pachter to eat his peanut-butter sandwich…), I think pre-ordering a console, while you don’t even know the price yet, is just.. plain stupid.

What you said, and I haven’t even had my second coffee. I also think that it’s BS because it allows for a false floating of ‘pre-order figures’…

Never truer words have been said, we don’t know much about the thing. I can understand pre ordering a console as limited stocks over preordering a game but even so wait to see what the thing is about first people.

For R10 I can pre-order the console at BT but now that would be daft to pre-order a console that’s going on sale in Christmas time.

The lack of backwards compatibility is a major issue for me unfortunately. Not that I have a PS3 at the moment, but it means that they are also unlikely to support PS4 games on the PS5… The Wii U on the other hand can play my guitar hero games just fine!

There’s actually a strong chance the PS5 will have BC for PS4 games, however, that hinges on whether the PS5 is constructed in similar fashion (PC parts) to the PS4.

On what do you base that? Did the PS2 support PS1 games, PS3 PS2 games, PS4 PS3 games?

Um…yeah the PS2 supported PS1 games. The PS3 (MY PS3) supports all PS1 and PS2 games. PS4 doesn’t support PS3 games because the architecture is so radically different. And it’s why the PS3 eventually stopped having full BC, because they actually had a PS2 on the circuit board of the PS3. The PS4 will have some kind of cloud service for PS3 games, however. No word on costs for that however. Then again, I’ve got a PS3 still, so I don’t really care about BC for the PS4.

So, really, the proof is that Sony has always had BC, for _every_ generation (except the upcoming PS4), it wasn’t until a bunch of bitching babies cried and complained about entitlement that the PS2 was stripped from the circuit board of the PS3, in order to cut costs so that the price could come down for people who weren’t familiar with savings accounts and setting money aside.

Does an out-of-the-box latest firmware revision unmodded PS3 support PS1 and PS2 games? No it doesn’t.

I don’t like speculating on what might be with regards to the cloud streaming of games. It will in all likelihood be region-locked and only available to people in the US of A.

“Does an out-of-the-box latest firmware revision unmodded PS3 support PS1 and PS2 games? No it doesn’t”

PS1 games, yes, PS2 games no.

But, you’re missing the point to this ultimately useless conversation from someone who thought the PS2 didn’t have BC. The PS2 has BC, the PS3 originally had BC, and was only removed to serve entitled gamer’s. If you have an issue with it, I suggest going out in the world and teaching the current wasted generation, that just because they live and breath, doesn’t mean they’re entitled to jack and shit. They’re entitled to work for their money and save up for the toys they want, just like the rest of us.

Yet you don’t know any details about the streaming. You don’t know what it will cost, what games will be available, when it will be available, whether it will be available here, whether it will be playable here due to our low bandwidth Internet connections and high latency.

Yes, I did not know that the PS2 could run PS1 games. But that was how long ago? After that Sony have repeatedly decided to not provide BC, or to even remove it from consoles that had the ability? That says a lot more about their future BC plans than one very old console that supports BC.

            March 14, 2013 at 10:55

And you know the details about the PS5? Pray tell, I’m sure everyone here is more than excited to hear about it. Most business won’t actually go into depth over a system that they haven’t completely finished yet. That’s…just smart business. Giving details that may end up having to be different can result in negative PR, something that any company tries to avoid.

PS3 had BC, everyone had the chance to get it, that you didn’t, is each gamer’s fault. Not Sony’s. They’re a company and trying to make money, they released the original PS3 for a huge loss, and still people belly-ached about the cost (I have a job, don’t whine to me about it). I’m really sorry Sony didn’t put free PS3 vouchers in gumball machines for 25c, but that’s not how things work in reality.

Your logic is severely flawed…severely. The PS2 and PS3 originally had BC, the PS4 will have a cloud service in lieu of BC for PS3 games. So…2 of the 3 applicable consoles originally had BC (PS1 excluded, since there’s nothing to BC to).

And what does the age of the console have to do with it, when we’re talking 10 year lifecycles? Seems like a silly argument to make.

          • Wyzak

            March 14, 2013 at 11:03

The PS3 doesn’t have BC anymore, even if you have one of the old models which has the hardware they disabled it. It is irrelevant whether it had it at some point. It doesn’t have it now and there are no plans to bring it back. The PS4 doesn’t have BC, it has a cloud service were we don’t have nearly enough information on.

So that’s 1 out of 3 consoles that has BC, and one that has something that will probably never work in SA.

It’s not the age of the console. It’s the evolution of their way of thinking. A decision made today obviously carries more weight than one made 10 years ago.

            March 14, 2013 at 11:09

It’s not relevant to you, but to the rest of us it means that Sony’s interested getting BC to their customers, provided it doesn’t murder them financially. I mean, they don’t have to make PS3 games available by a streaming service? The arrogant Sony could just say go buy a PS3 if you want to play PS3 games.

So, sorry, 2 out of 3 consoles. My console is stock except for the HDD which I upgraded and it has full BC, not my fault if people didn’t jump on the wagon when they had the chance.. You can try to spin this however you want, but I simply disagree with your conclusions, and also your curious way of not wanting to speculate about the streaming service which will be available this gen, but more than happy to speculate about PS5, which is at least 6 years away, if not more.

As the fella said the 1st ps3 (60gb) did support ps1 and ps2 playback but ppl where complaining about the price of the ps3 so sony decided to end that to make the ps3 cheaper to buy. The ps3 uses a cell shaded processor for its games, its a pig to program on, developers asked sony to change to p.c like hardware for ease of use, unfortunatally cell shaded games will not run without that cell chip hence why ps3 games wont play on ps4, but they can be altered digitally and streamed. Iv preordered a ps4, in putting money aside every month, I loved my ps3 for its exclusive games and for that reason I wont be looking elsewhere for my entertainment

Most of those that are pre-ordering have no clue of what the final price of the PS3 is and these pre-orders are not sanctioned by Sony.

I always wait a few months (probably 6 – 8 months) for the 2nd console addition to come out. By then they have hopefully worked out all the kinks or hopeful most. These new consoles should be beasts and will get nice and warm. Hopefully they don’t turn into leaf-blowers or vaccuum cleaners where you need headsets (wireless or plugged in) just to hear what is happening on the screen.
