Man, I hope you guys are getting a decent bonus this year. Hot off the news that the Playstation 4 will be arriving on December 6, comes word from ITF Gaming that the console has a current RRP of R6299. That’s plenty of moolah. Fortunately, you only need one kidney to live.

Same. I put R8k and 10k ebucks aside for PS4 and games…. Epic December incomming… That said, I am a bit dissapointed with the local price….2 -3 years ago I would not have been able to buy this cash, and many people wont be. 🙁

Oef. Between a wedding, honeymoon and trip to Australia this is gonna have to wait. I’ll be happy with Rome II and GTAV for about two years, though. Chances are likely then that newer, less broken console models will be out by then.

The first Total War: Rome kept me busy gaming for three years. If this can do the same (and it looks fucking amazing already just from screenshots) I’ll be able to avoid Steam Summer Sales for years. Then I’ll just buy the next-next-gen thingy mabobob.

To be fair ps3 has many exlusives becasue they needed them to sell ps3s, people saw no reason to buy expensive ps3s when they could play on a cheaper xbox, i expect ms to throw alot of exlusives on xbox one in order to sell it.

Pretty sure PS3 had as many exclusives as it did, because Sony has so many in-house dev studios.

            August 23, 2013 at 06:05

Right thats why they brought haze along for the ride and then took quantic dream and sucker punch wasnt exactly owned by them, nor is insomniac that now are multiplatform.

          • Brian Murphy

            August 23, 2013 at 15:58

You realize you actually made no point there, right? Haze was made by Free Radical Design, not a first party developer. Sucker Punch is owned by Sony, and Insomniac was a 2nd party developer.

And…still, you made no point. If the only desire was to inflate the exclusive content on the PS3, then Sony probably wouldn’t have also been simultaneously developing for the PS2, PSP, and some PC games.

          • Dakan45

            August 23, 2013 at 17:04

actually i made a a perfect point, haze was multiplat they paid them off to make it exlusive, same with quantic dream and insomniac is not owned by sony, sucker punch was not owned by sony either. Now it is.

You said “because Sony has so many in-house dev studios.”

Only they dont. They made deals with many studios to get exlusives. Sony only had naughty dog and santa monica, the rest were not owned.

“If the only desire was to inflate the exclusive content on the PS3, then
Sony probably wouldn’t have also been simultaneously developing for the
PS2, PSP, and some PC games.”

Why you say that? psp is their console they threw some crap to feed it. The development budget is nowhere near the same as ps3 its not like they could just release those games on ps3 on BLU RAY disks. Back then atari didnt want to make ps3 games because of how expensive blu ray was.

ps2 was only kept alive due to low sales on ps3 and what about pc? Planetside was mad by mmo that was acquired by sony, consoles cant do mmos, now however they port them to ps4.

            August 23, 2013 at 17:29

Haze was never multi-platform, it was always a PS3 exclusive. Never said Quantic (2nd party) or Insomniac (3rd party) were owned by Sony. You’re right though, Sucker Punch wasn’t originally a 1st party dev in the start of the PS3 era, they actually started in 1997 as a Microsoft company, and then left and have simply worked very closely with Sony for ages, until finally being acquired in 2011.

Regardless, you still haven’t made a point. You suggest Sony threw a ton of money at these developers, and counting you, that equals one person who’s ever said this. Sony spent the entirety of the last gen not buying exclusivity, and then forcing developers to bring additional polish and content to any timed exclusives the 360 got.

You assert that Sony had to inflate the exclusives on the PS3 in order to make it attractive at it’s price point, and then balk when I point out the PS2, PSP and PC games they developed at the same time, not to mention that they were also simultaneously designing and developing for the Vita (rumors of the PSP’s successor went as far back as 2009, which suggest the Vita was in development before then).

If a company is so terribly concerned about the success of their current expensive platform, they don’t stretch themselves over 3 platforms, and another upcoming platform, to achieve success on that expensive platform They also wouldn’t remove backwards compatibility, which gives access to thousands of other titles and increases the desirability of the machine.

I was there when people complained they cancelled the other versions in the last minute.

“Haze is a first-person shooter video game developed by Free Radical Design and published by Ubisoft for the PlayStation 3.[4] It was released worldwide in May 2008. Releases for Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows were canceled.””

I Believe i made a perfect point, why dont you want to accept it? Somy did not have many inhouse studios, they just bought exlusives

” You suggest Sony threw a ton of money at these developers, and counting you, that equals one person who’s ever said this.”

Many have, suprises me you never heard of it, MS is doing it too now. Thats the point of consoles to buy them to play exlusive games, it has been like that since the 80s.

“Sony spent the entirety of the last gen not buying exclusivity, and then
forcing developers to bring additional polish and content to any timed
            exclusives the 360 got.”

Wait what? When did that happen? Sonny didnt force anyone. Hell MS paid rockstar 50 million for timed exlusivity on gta iv dlcs, why you think sony isnt paying the devlopers crapazillions to make those games exlusive? Ofcourse naughty dog and santa monica are theirs and there is the case of quantic dream looking for investors because their movie-game idea is not easilly appealing to publishers.

Yes i am saying sony made exlusives so people will buy ps3s. PsP games are cheap as hell we talking about playsation budget, you cant possibly compare them. Or you think that a syphon filter game could have been made for ps3? Ofcourse not. Those crash games were cheap as well. The gta games were made by some small rockstar studios, etc etc.

What “pc games” you talking about?

“If a company is so terribly concerned about the success of their current expensive platform,”

They gone around saying that people will be happy to pay more for ps3, they hunted down every site with ps3 hacks and yet the sales were lower than x360 titles, they also had terrible service at times.

The only reason ps2 was supported was because many used it since the ps3 was too expensive. Ms however ditched xbox quite fast.

“They also wouldn’t remove backwards compatibility”

Yes why did they remove backwards compability? Maybe because enough people bought ps3s so there ws no need to support ps2 titles anymore.

So yeah sony pretty much does what it does to increase their ps3 sales, nothing more.

          • Brian Murphy

            August 23, 2013 at 22:04

Sony had way more in-house and 2nd party devs, than Microsoft did at the time. That’s the point I’m making. And while Haze was originally slated as multi-platform, it represents one of the very few titles that Sony actually got exclusivity over. Now, whether that’s because they paid for it, or, that Microsoft simply wasn’t interested, remains to be seen, since there’s no actual information available to the public that indicates your conclusion. I’d be willing to go with the latter, simply because Haze wasn’t a terribly compelling game and Microsoft had Halo at the time. That isn’t to say I’m right and you’re wrong regarding Haze, it simply means we have no data to support either conclusion. But, because you have one example of one mediocre game going exclusive, doesn’t necessarily translate into a trend. Again, you’re drawing conclusions with circumstantial evidence at best.

Of course, you go on to rather prove my point with Microsoft paying for timed exclusivity of GTA, which Sony didn’t try to match. Why? Because Sony as a company was struggling financially at the time. PS3 dev costs, Blu Ray dev costs, a struggling TV and Camera division. They weren’t exactly an economic powerhouse at the time, and hardly able to afford the kind of cash expenditures you describe.

So they relied mainly on their in-house devs, and 2nd and 3rd party studios who’d been allied with the company throughout the PS2 era, to provide compelling content. Seriously, you are probably the first person I’ve heard of to make the claim that they purchased exclusivity for a slew of titles. Maybe I missed like…3+ years of news, but I was watching the industry pretty closely at the time.

            PC Games – SoE

People wouldn’t have cared as much about the PS3’s price point, had it actually had as much content on it, and had the worlds financial stability not imploded. Those two were cataclysmic events for the PS3, because people just didn’t have the expendable income that they had once had. Shit happens.

Sorry, I just don’t agree that Sony purchased all this exclusivity. They didn’t have the money for it, and the divisions within Sony were all hurting too much financially, to be able to afford shelling out large piles of cash for a console that was struggling to take off.

          • Dakan45

            August 23, 2013 at 23:09

haze was also gonna be released on pc, no one owns pc, so yeah they got paid to make it exlusive.

What about quantic dream? They gone exlusive as well.

No one WANTS to be exlusive, they only do it because they get paid to do it, now that bungie, epic and insomniac have broken free of contracts they make multiplatform games.

“Again, you’re drawing conclusions with circumstantial evidence at best.”

Your point was that ps3 had plenty of exlusives due to many inhouse development teams, which is wrong, sure it has more than ms but ps2 had exlusives becuase multiplatform development wasnt viable then, now however sony lost alot of exlusives like say dmc, resident evil, fina fantasy, sillent hill, etc etc.

I was there when sales were low and haze became exlusive in the last minute and since god of war 3 was far away all the focus was on resistance 1 and everyone waited for uncharted and killzone, then they dragged heavy rain in it. Thats how things looked back then, after that ms did the same and threw exlusivity on gears of war 2 and fable 2.

“Because Sony as a company was struggling financially at the time.”

Like i said they took a loss and threw exlusives to sell ps3s, if you have money problems you dont spend more cash to make games, unless you think you can improve your problem that way. That is the “logic” i was using.

            Makes sense?

Why do you argue with this? We basicly say the same thing, you think that nearly all of them were bought, obviously not but some exlusive deals were definetly made for profit and not due to sony loyalists alone.

SOE is a mmo company, you cant do mmo on consoles, sooo yeah.

“People wouldn’t have cared as much about the PS3’s price point, had it actually had as much content on it,”

……WHICH IS WHAT I FREAKING SAID ON MY ORIGINAL POST FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

Content= games, why buy a ps3 instead of a x360? Exlusives, thus ps3 needed exlusives.

      Ouch.

Taking R 6300 and dividing that by 399, gives you 15.79. Multiplying that by 499 gives you R 7878.95. So I believe you will be looking more in the region of R 7800 – R 8000 for the XBO.

      2007:

In the UK the price was 425 pounds. A pound was R14. = R5950.

      Sold for R5999

      2013:

In the UK the price is 349 pounds. A pound is now R15 = R5589.99

      Sells for R6299

By that logic the thing should sell hopefully for R5750 at launch with a good enough profit margin..

A 20k PC is overkill. You can get one (monitor, KB, MS excl) for R10k that will knock the socks off anything. But then you can go total overkill as well and spend 20k

            August 21, 2013 at 11:15

Well you can drop R10k+ on GFX card but a R2000 card will allow you max out settings. COD players tend want 150+ FPS so they go ape shit, if I have to play something on medium settings near EOL it doesn’t really bother me.

I have a 8 year old rig (mostly used as back up and server) than can still run most strategy games at decent settings.

Also consoles aren’t tax deductible 😉

No but you got dlcs, subscriptions, online passes and other crap such as patches, that dont work, so you uninstall the patch, reinstall the game and yeah, pretty much console gaming has become complicated. My biggest problem with consoles is that i cant customize controls, i have to stick to presets.

But I only know so much, sure other guys would give you a better idea…. But reall the price tag you pay for a next gen console cant be beaten by a pc anyday…

            August 23, 2013 at 01:46

If you upgrade instead of building one, that could work well. Every begining of a console generation is a big push in requirements but now pc hardware will be actually utilized and pc has been next gen for many years, sooo games may actually come out more optimized. Again next gen consoles use pc hardware.

          • HvR

            August 21, 2013 at 11:05

Hardware requirement flattened out quite a lot over the last few years; in the 90’s and early 2000’s it used to be 2 years max before upgrade. No you can easily go 4 years with minor R3k upgrade to extend it another 3 years.

Keep in mind games are half price so you break even after 10 games.

Problem is so many games on different platforms giving so many different types of experiences,

So a true gamer lets his family starve and gets everything.

The reason for that is that games are made for consoles and thus having limited graphical advances, also this gen is by far the longest, i hope ps4/xbone dont go for longer than 5 years.

7k can build you a decent pc that can run most games better than consoles. I spent 8k on mine and it runs everything on high. You just have to know where to shop for parts.

          • TiMsTeR1033

            August 21, 2013 at 11:11

Parts cost yes is important but what about top end graphics cards?? they like 5 grand alone… or atleast close… Talking about future games that are gonna push the shit outta current pc tech.

            August 21, 2013 at 11:12

thats where you wrong man ps3 and xbox 360 still look amazing and current pcs are needed for games like that on pc eg crysis, sure pc has higher textures ect but still looks amazing like gta 5. next gen games are gonna be massive you will need to have top range to get to the level of games of the future… if pcs were for soley gaming like had nothing else to run then sure they would be on par or beat next gen consoles but its never that way.

Current consoles run games at low settings. Also lower resolution and less fps.

7-8 year consoles doe that, you dont magically get better perfomance, you just run at dated graphics

“they would be on par or beat next gen consoles but its never that way.”

Actually that was always the case, go find me a 8 core cpu that is only 1.6ghz, you cant. Its too crap.

Quake 2 looked better on pc, half life 2 looked better on pc, morrowind looked better on pc. Oblivion looked better on pc. Pretty much everything looked better on pc

Hah, only if you’re making sacrifices. If you were to design a top of the line PC right now, you could conceivably spend R169,286.42. Maximum PC just put together their newest Dream Machine and holy shitballs, were they not kidding.

            CPU – Intel Core i7 3970X – R10207.20
Mobo – Asus Rampage IV Extreme – R4389.10
            RAM – 64g Corsair Dominator Platinum – R12248.64
GPU – 4x EVGA GeForce GTX Titan Hydro Copper – R47769.70
            SSD – 2x Samsung 840 Pro – R10207.20
            SSD – 2x Crucial M500 – R12248.64
            HDD – 3x WD Caviar Black (4TB/ea) – R9186.48
            ODD – Pioneer BDR-208DBK – R714.50
            Cooling – Custom Liquid Cooling – R10207.20
            PSU – LEPA G1600-MA – R3368.38
            Case – Corsair 900D – R3572.52
            Paint – Smooth Creations – R4082.88
            OS – Windows 8 Professional – R1020.72
            Monitor – Asus PQ321 – R38787.36
            Mouse – Steel Series Sensei – R765.54
            Keyboard – IBM Model M – R510.36

Yes, that’s 4 GTX Titans, 15TB of storage, 64g of RAM, 17 fans and two gigantic radiators. It pulls down 178 FPS in Batman: Arkam City at max resolution. And scored 17,199 in 3DMark 11 (high enough that at the time of publication, it was the 6th highest score in 3DMark 11, ever).

Just read all these comments and realized most console gamers have no idea what hardware costs. R20k for a PC? That’s insane. Did a full upgrade about 3 years ago which cost me R6k. Bought a GTX 660Ti about a month ago for R3k and I can run Crysis 3 on ultra. So no idea what your guys are smoking. Think most console gamers made the switch when hardware still lasted you about a year. Those days are long gone.

            August 21, 2013 at 19:16

The problem is, many of these folks have never actually researched building a PC, and don’t understand that buying the bleeding edge tech, is a waste of money. It took YEARS for companies to actually utilize Quad-core processors properly. It took years for companies to create engines that actually utilize GPU resources properly (and it takes AMD/Nvidia years to properly tweak the drivers appropriately as well).

There is no need to go all in, on a PC build unless you have an exorbitant amount of excess cash. The only piece of your PC you should gladly and willingly pay top dollar for, is the mobo. And that’s so that in the future, you have plenty of room for expansion/upgrade. The rest, as you say, can be mid-range, and the PC will be competitive for years and years to come.

We always get stock from the UK batch (same tv systems and power supply), so they work from the UK price. The UK sterling to rand exchange rate is what is pushing up the price.

Also the US price excludes VAT, so add 10% to 15% on what they actually pay in the US.

        Thanks for that.

I checked the UK price and current exchange: R5600 odd. So its R700 more on a direct price comparison.

Regarding the USA, sales tax varies from state to state, with about 4 of them having no sales tax whatsoever.

Well for direct comparison I would use our VAT rate (14%) since the retailer and MS wants to get the $399 out before taxes.

I think SK also needs to carry the extra shipping cost from the UK, this has gone through the roof (20% year on year I heard from people doing large scale import/exports).

I do not think SK as an “official distributor” is given free rein on pricing.

On that topic, maybe we should get data packages with a console in stead of a darft laptop….

Perhaps if they did the same for a ps4 then people would see the light…

With your phone/tablet, you get data and airtime back for free.

I promise you, you are not getting anything for free from Vodacom or MTN or Cell C, they make up for it somehow!!! They are shrewd buggers all of them!!!

Jikes!!! – It is a bit more than I thought (was looking around the R5500 mark) – But it will provide years of entertainment so I can justify the purchase (practicing my speech for the Missus).

    I don’t think it’s completely outrageous. I would pay that for a PS4.

Just a quick look at this from a mathematical point of view. We will be importing from the Europe (Like we usually do) and according to Playstation SA we need to consider the UK pricing (most likely their importing straight from the UK then) which is 350Pounds. The current exchange rate is R15.93. So 350×15.93= R5575.50. Then adding 14% VAT gives a total of R6356.07. Still think it’s not fair given they set it at R6299? So blame our region and our poor exchange rate. NOT Sony or the distributors

While, I’ve saved up well over the RRP (with enough for a couple of games), it’s still a crap load of money. December is going to be interesting. 😮

Wow you’ll have to pay even more than the euro price, and that’s already a 100$ more than if youd just buy it in dollars.
