PSN Pass makes renting games unaffordable

We covered the announcement of the PSN Pass last week which was met with a lot of resistance by our stronger PS3 fans and a lot of mocking from our Xbox 360 fans.

In essence I don’t disagree with the idea of charging for online multiplayer at all but I worry about the direction Sony is heading in with the PSN Pass as it all seems a little confusing.

Originally I thought a PSN Pass was only for certain PS3 titles and that it was a blanket pass to play online once purchased but that isn’t quite correct.

It is only for certain Sony titles but it is game specific. Meaning that if you bought Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3 (unconfirmed) second hand and wanted to play both of them online you would need to buy 2 PSN Passes.

One for each game…

Which is turn makes renting games a problem as you’d need to buy a pass for that game you just rented and then when the game was sent back to the shop you’d be stuck with a PSN Pass for a title you didn’t own.

I’d prefer Sony to offer a monthly PSN Pass fee for say $5 that gives you access to online play for all Sony titles instead of having one for each title.
