David Cage’s Quantic Dreams is working on at least one exclusive game for Sony’s new console, and as is the company’s wont, it’ll feature some of the console’s very best in graphical fidelity. According to a job listing, Quantic Dream is looking for an Animation Director – and that guy will get to work with one of the most advanced motion and performance capture hardware on the planet.

Here’s what the ad is looking for:

  • We are looking for an experienced Animation Director who wishes to mark a new stage in his/her career by supervising a highly experienced team working on promising subjects with equipment that is unrivalled in Europe:
  • You will work in collaboration with the director, supervising the animations produced daily in the studio. You will define the ambience, style and pacing of sequences while maintaining the internal unity and artistic continuity, but also monitoring the workflow of the different contributors;
  • Along with 3 leads, you will supervise all the departments dedicated to animation: the in-house soundproofed Performance Capture studio (74 Vicon T160 cameras), the body animation team and the facial team.

The Vicon T160 is a 16 megapixel motion capture camera, one of the most advanced of its kind, and a performance capture studio stuffed with 74 of the things certainly makes Cage’s performance capture studio one of the largest in the world.

It seems that Quantic Dream’s latest will certainly be next-gen in terms of performance capture – but my single hope is that whatever it is he’s working on fares better in the story department. Cage has always wanted to make games about emotion, and performance capture goes a long way in to having believable game characters.  Beyond: Two Souls had some poignant moments – but descended in to the worst B-grade sci-fi twaddle by its conclusion – and no amount of capture can better bad writing.

The last thing we saw from Quantic Dream was this demo, called The Dark Sorcerer.

    For some reason reading about this makes me think of the Project: Morpheus VR headset.
