Question of the Week: Your scariest gaming experience ever

QOTWscary.jpg

Greetings boys and girls and welcome back to another horrible Monday at work, another week of office drudgery and indeed another week of gaming.

To make Mondays seem a little brighter for everyone I have decided to make Monday the official host of our new Question of the Week section.

What this is is pretty simple. We ask a question every week, usually involving gaming experiences and fun stuff. There will be nothing serious here to dampen your day so get ready to share your campfire stories. This section relies on you our readers to let give us your answers and opinions, tell us your stories and open up topics for discussion.

If you are one of those people who have always been too shy to comment, or just purely not bothered, now is the time to speak up and tell us of your experience because to sweeten the deal and kick off the new section I have organised some prizes. We have very recently had a “comment spam” competition and we just happen to have an extra copy of Bioshock (PC) and DMC4 (Xbox 360) lying around which I have organised as prizes for this week. We will pick the two best, funniest or interesting stories and the winners will be announced next week (maybe sooner).

This weeks question is of course: What has been your scariest gaming experience ever?

I myself have been the victim of many a pant-wetting experience, from playing Friday the 13th on my 8-bit when I was but a child to having the living daylights scared out of me recently in Condemned 2. What experience have you had that has left an imprint on your gaming life and of indeed, your underpants. The type that had you going outside for ten minutes just to catch your breath again.

[Just a quick note. To avoid spoilers for other gamers, I suggest that you begin your comment with the title of the game first so that if someone hasn’t played it or finished it yet they can just skip to the next one.]

If you have any questions that you want to suggest for our question of the week feel free to email me at nick@lazygamer.co.za.

    Resident Evil 2

I got this game on the Playstation as it was still known as then.It is still the scariest game for my wife. I actually had to stop playing during certain sections as my wife watched as I was playing. She beat me with her fists to stop as she was terrified of what was going to happen next. She watched it through her fingers as she covered her eyes and trembled. I told her not to watch while I play but she insisted to finish it. At night I made those gnawing sounds as the zombies ate you in her ears in bed and we are still childless today. She still hates the game and zombies and when I told her a new one is coming to the Xbox she forbid me to buy it. I will buy it though as I know her curiosity will get the better of her and she will fall in the same trap and watch it again with the same consequences. 😈

Yes there was a pants wetting moment in this game, you are Roger Wilco walking through a deserted town and there is this “person” walking around too, when ever they intercept you their face, their blood curdling scream, still haunts me it does.

Dude! That part where the licker comes through the two-way glass nearly killed me. It comes in as one of my top 3 scares for sure. It happened in the middle of a sunny Sunday afternoon and I paused the game there and just went outside and sat in the sun for like 10 mins. That scare probably took a couple years off my life.

Have to agree. I was 14 at the time. Me and two of my friends damn near crapped ourselves. We turned off and went outside for about an hour. I think that has to be my number one scare of any game/movie/anything really.

Scariest gaming moment for me is probably the Haunted house Scene in Vampire the Masquerade : Bloodlines. That and the first time I played Resident Evil 1; Those nasty window-breaking hell spawned canines of death almost gave me a heart attack.

I know that in a few months, this’ll be replaced by scenes from Left 4 Dead though. 😉

    The original Silent Hill.

I’ve never been as scared in my life.
Every time that radio crackled, I’d have a drizzle of pooh down my leg.
I stopped listening to the radio for the fear of losing signal and having to hear that crackle in real life.

The sounds those little creatures made were enough to make a grown man cry little girl tears.

My therapist said I’ll get over it soon enough, until I showed him the game, now we see the same therapist.

I still sleep in in the same bed as my parents with all the lights on

I was playing at night, in the Administration section where you find the area where it looks like people were doing satanic rituals, it was about midnight (almost exactly) and the lights in my room start flickering. I switched off my PC right there and went and hid in bed.

    True story.

@OddSock, that haunted hotel in Vampires scared the #@$! out of me too, I remember playing it and just wishing the stage would end. 😛

For my money it was the original Alien Vs Predator on the PC playing as the Colonial Marine. There was this one part where you’re in this really dark area with your motion tracker beeping ominously and a face hugger scurrying about.Every time that damn thing jumped me I think I wet myself just a little bit. Then the one day my sick sadist of a father (I think I was about 13/14 at the time) came up behind me (I was wearing headphones) and poked me in the ribs. I got such a skrik I fell of the chair. To this day I don’t think I’ve ever played with headphones ever again and my father has been getting socks and soap-on-a-rope for Xmas ever since.

A mate borrowed a projector from work. Living in a double volume loft gave him a massive wall for a screen. The image must have been a 4m by 4m. All the lights were off to give max brighness. Next thing we know, a beasty boss jumps out. Beers and chips went everywhere !

    Doom 3

early on in the game when you are walking around in a bathroom and it’s really quiet and dark and of course you looking for pickups in the stalls (it really make little sense to pickup health in a toilet!? anyways) there is a large mirror above the sinks and as you do in all 1st person shooters you look into the mirror and see your character and marvel at the new game’s engine to pull off ‘the mirror’ when *BAM*

An f.loud Mad Shreeek sound blasts through my headphones and a deamon covered in flames appears behind you – but only in the freakin mirror!! My heart virtually popped out of my chest. 😯

I have never produced so much manure in my life.
The whole game was just a scare circus from start to finish, from the freaky intro scene, to the pant wetting mirror scene to the crazy gouge out your eyes floating lady thingy.

Not to mention the atmosphere was enough to put a choke hold around you when ever you played the game all alone

ok, I have 2 games, fear and doom 3… for different reasons

you see, F.E.A.R was just a very well made game, and a lot of time
was spent on the whole music and sounds… so, while you playing,
you would hear that dark disturbing music, and the screams or the
sounds of the enemies intercoms… But that little girl, my god!
when you play this little scary b!tch pop’s up, and way-hey, all shit breaks loose 🙁
Must most of all, i have to say that those invisible guys were
scary… (and i think my skill in that game are also scary:D)

Now comes doom 3 (i played FEAR 1st) an average game, no doubt, the gameplay is alright… but the thing about that game is the god dam lighting… IT’S SO DARK! my word, most of the game you forced to use a torch and that even sucks(you would think they’d use duracell)
and so you running through this map, un-able to see most of whats around you, except for that little circle that the light makes, and BAM! you get attacks by a monster thing and you frantically press your numbers to get A gun, fire 1000’s of rounds, flick back to your torch, discover you’ve blow away half the map and so you continue the game thinking every things sweet… only to find that you pass through a sliding door and those monster things are waiting just for you, and you near shit yourself…
But what makes such a game scary is that you always play after work or school, and so you start at around 6pm, and you play until it **** [edit – Nick] dark, and there’s no lights on where your computer is…

eish, memories, and i’m now afraid of the dark 🙁

This gaming experience was so intense for me I never even got the dics out of the box. That either says something about my overactive imagination or it brands me a total pussy:)

In 1995 I was ten years old. At the end of that year a Sierra published game called Phantasmagoria was released
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantasmagoria_(computer_game).

For those of you who don’t remember this game it was a horror title notable for being one of the first releases to be comprised of entirely live action video sequences. So real actors would play out all the parts. At the time it also held the record for number of game discs (7).

One of my friends’ parents picked up the game a couple of weeks after it was released and needless to say my friend got to play the title. The game was dealing with a lot of controversy in the media for having scenes of rape and intense, pyschologically taxing violence, so of course it wasn’t really a title that parents were rushing out to provide for their kids, but my friend had pretty liberal parents.

For weeks after my friend played it he would divulge the gruesome details of the game: how scary it was, how gory, how pyschologically scarring. I had to play this game!

Problem was, i was a kid with a seriously overactive imagination. I spent most of my childhood hiding in fear under the duvet every night from fear of Freddy Krueger, and I hadn’t even seen Nightmare on Elm Street! Just looking at the film covers in video stores used to freak me out – the powers of imagination!

So to say that i was nervous and freaked out by phantasmagoria would have been an understatement. But i was incredibly intrigued as well. Finally i got the courage to buy the game. My mother had to take me to the store, but she was oblivious about games so she had no idea what i was buying. I walked into the store and paced around for a bit before picking up phantasmagoria (on a side note the store clerk didnt even bat an eyelid when this 10 year old purchased an R rated game. not that i was complaining!.

The car ride home i was a mess, fidgeting and and agigated due to the mix of excitement and fear, but mostly fear. When we neared my house i was actually so overcome with terror towards this game that my mother could see it on my face and in my body language. She asked me if something was wrong and at that point i totally pussied out and asked her if we could go back and exchange it. We went back to the store and i was so freaked out i couldnt even go in and change it myself, my mother had to go for me. I didnt even tell her what to get i didnt care i just didnt wanna be around this game.

So my mother went back into the store and had a word with the clerk, asked him what was appropriate for a boy of my age. the irony… he gave her duke nukem 3d! (which actually turned out to be one of my greatest game experiences ever)

    on a side note:
For my 21st birthday my friend who had phantasmagoria gave me his old copy as a joke to try out. That game is tame! but it just goes to prove the power of imagination in young children

    Clive Barker’s Undying –
without a doubt the most girly-man-fying game out there that reduced me to a withered wreck. That game takes the cake as being consistently freakish. Not sure of her name but I think it may have been the first sister bossfight.. . that bitch could motor!! She nipped around like a bloodlusting cockroach and plucked my manhood one strand at a time.
It’s a game everyone should play. I’m actually getting the chills thinking of it now.. good thing it’s daytime, otherwise I’d be crying my last tears.
