Rage isn’t ‘dead’ says Id

It's merely resting

There have been some fantastic games this generation. There have also been some games which could have been much more, but completely missed the mark and wasted that potential to transcend the genre. Rage is one such game, a 2011 Id Software title that attempted to be the future of first-person shooters, but felt like more of a relic in patchy graphics. The game ain’t dead though.

Speaking to Joystiq at Quakecon 2013, Id co-founder Tim Willits said that there was a chance that Id would one day return to the world of Rage. But for now, the team behind the game was proud of what they accomplished with the game and id Tech 5. “I’m proud of what we did, I’m proud of the universe that we built,” Willits said.

The franchise is not dead. We’re not doing anything immediately with it, but when I designed the universe, I designed it in such a way that it would be easy to step back into. I’m still proud that we did something that was different – it wasn’t like the games that we’ve done in the past.

We really tried to do one engine that worked for everything. It really helps establish a robust tech that, as John [Carmack] said last night, we’re adding stuff into it based on the new consoles, and it’s allowed people to make different games because the technology is flexible and robust and works on everything.

That should be news that appeases all the Rage fans. All tens of them. Rage was a dissapointment to me really. It had some great idea and, some fantastic moments. But it was all hamstrung by various technical  and gameplay problems that watered down the experience.

I’d love to see a sequel, but one that has clearly learnt from the mistakes of the original.

Rage was a nice game, after one can get the game to render properly, next time they shouldn’t let Bethesda have a finger in the pie, whatever Bethesda touches turns into a bug.

I was fine with the game play. It was the story. The story is the reason I never finished it.

Rage is far better than DNF.

I think the problem most people have with DNF is that it’s a really just an old school shooter in a new engine, and everyone was expecting better because we’ve had so many good shooters over the years.

You have a good point but also missed, the biggest thing about DNF was that it was a re imagining of a title of the era of people booting up in dos, not used to a GUI, had no USB. It was a sacrilege to the old school gamers (I hate saying it like that, Im just not sure how else to put it in context other than that phrase)

It was however the last time I climbed the hype train, never again.

The combat was actually pretty decent in the game. I just hated all the graphical pop-in and it felt like Fallout: Light Edition but lacked soul.

Yup – guilty… I liked it. Will be honest and say that I finished it loooong after I bought it – just lost interest after a few days. But, when I got stuck in and went for the finish line, I actually enjoyed it. Better than some other offerings out there.

And, as Hammer said, the ending was terrible! But other than that, it was a fun, good looking shooter.

Count me in too. I loved making those explosive crossbow darts. Steam says I have clocked 36 hours on it 🙂

Still to this day, possibly one of the worst/most disappointing endings I’ve ever had to experience, I literally got a fright when the credits came up, and thought “What!? was that it?” after 7-8 hrs of gameplay. Overall I liked the graphic’s/style (once all the patches and textures are fixed) and the gameplay feel was pretty fun. The enemy movement and dodgeing was top notch, which ID software seem to always get right.

Yeah the enemy animation and attack routines were awesome which made the combat wicked. It was all those boring driving bits and crap outdoor pop-in textures that ruined the rest of the game for me.

I enjoyed it up to the end when it just ended. That really got me. It just ends. Got the expasion now where they said it, wont just end so you can play even after main story ends. The graphics was really bad but still the game was fun to play. I will give a sequal a go but I wont expect too much from it.

I loved Rage’s graphics. It was the linear, generic, story line with a pathetic, no contest, hyper easy to finish ending that really blew donkey for me.
