Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 - Xbox 360 vs PS3

So the much anticipated Rainbow 6 sequel has arrived simultaneously on the 360 and PS3, which means we have to compare to see which one is the better option.

If you remember back to the original, it took forever to port it over to the PS3 and then when it finally did arrive it was blatantly inferior to the 360 version. So have they learnt their lesson this time?

Well it did manage to release at the exact same time which is a big improvement. However how did it fair against the 360 version?

Videogamer.com has put together a very detailed and well worded comparison which is broken into 3 parts.

Graphics
Both versions are practically perfect however the PS3 version does suffer from a slightly unstable frame rate but does also appear to have better lighting. Framerate trumps lighting everytime though so the 360 takes it on graphics. But only a die hard graphics fan would notice.

Sound
No one can tell the difference between the two… It’s a tie

Gameplay
The PS3 does not come with rumbling controllers in PAL areas yet. So it isn’t counted in this comparison. The lack of rumble hurts the gameplay badly and the 360 wins it…

Multiplayer
The Xbox normally always wins in this regard because Live is still the better service, however that is not the reason that the 360 wins this round. For some obscure reason the PS3 version only allows 14 players while the 360 version allows 16… It seems like an odd thing to happen but there you go…

So all in all the 360 version wins but it really isn’t by much. If you have both consoles then they suggest getting the 360 version but if you only have a PS3 you really are not losing out in any way…

However it does need to be mentioned that with all the promises of the PS3, not one single cross platform game has really beaten the 360 yet. So we are in a position where I can either play Rainbow 6 on an Arcade machine for R1999 or a PS3 for R5500 and get the same experience.

I still don’t give Live a win on as a better service because it’s not official here 🙁

    Now thats an eye opener!

Not really the same experience with the 360 you get rumble and 16 player multiplayer 😀

Rumble doesn’t give it a win either. The shockaxiz controllers are available as imports ( and locally actually from some smart guys ) at +/- the same price as a regular sixaxiz.

Please dont say “yes but you have to import it” We all import games and a controller is no different

@Abe, I wrote that. Honestly if you disagree show me which cross platform game is better on the PS3

@hilt_ctn, Only hardcore gamers import. Your average (90%) gamer just uses what is available locally and at this moment in time the PS3 controller is not available locally.

This is just one of MANY reviews that puts the Xbox counterpart ahead of the PS3 game…

As a PS3 owner, this is all a bit disconcerting… A part of me wants to pull a “fanboy” and cry foul, but you can’t argue with the numbers… I’ve read too many reviews, and seen too many comparisons to try and dispute this story.

Xbox360, 2008 may be the year of the PS3, but you’re still #1 on the games-front…for now.

Very interesting indeed! The main difference in the static shots looks like it’s in the gamma levels more than anything – the shadow areas are a bit more open on the PS3 resulting in a lower perceived contrast. I’ve noticed this with COD4 as well, where I prefer the darker shadows on the Xbox 360. Of course this is something you should be able to tune via your TV’s calibration settings.

And to think that I haven’t even played the first RB6:V yet, I got some catching up to do this weekend! 😛

At current prices, if gaming is your only concern, the Xbox 360 is a bit of a no brainer. On the other hand, if you’re after a networked media hub you can think it like this: you can get a very decent wi-fi Blu-ray player for just R2000-2500 more than the price of an Xbox 😉

You need a memory card for that Arcade thats gonna set u back R349. So at anyone wanting an Arcade should budget R2349 for that console. The bonus though is that you don’t have to buy a rumbling control which sends the price of the PS3 back to the R6000 mark.

Oh and Incredible Connection is selling the PS3 at R5999 😉

Maybe not store front at the likes of Incredible, but there are several members in the PS3 forums that can provide locally

I imported a rumble controller, but I’m no hardcore gamer 😉

@Fox1, The arcade comes bundled with a memory card.

@hilt_ctn, Granted they are easy enough to get our hands on, but until they are officially launched here we can’t count them. The same way that Live should never be counted as a pro for a local Xbox…

That’s silly, so you are saying that even though you can use XboX live it doesn’t count?

So i guess then that RB6:V2 on XboX is rubbish because there is NO online?

I think we are being way too pedantic about this; does 2 extra players in online make any difference? If one could do 6 and the other only 4 i’d say okay, but when you are talking 12 or 14 there’s really no difference.

As for lighting against frame rate, it depends on the severity and according to the article they are negligible.

The rumble is a stupid argument, the PS3 has rumble. If i buy a wired controller i can’t say the game is crap because of it. Go buy a DS3 and you’ll have rumble.

Also bringing the price of the console has nothing to do with the game, and that’s what’s being compared here. PS fans can then go and say “If i buy the Arcade i have to wire up my whole house because it doesn’t have WiFi”.

If you buy both versions you’ll get the same thing.

@ Banana hammock. Hell yeah it makes a difference. 2 extra guys means 2 less guys looking for somewhere else to play. I suppose for a PS3 owner this is not a problem because they will have difficulties in filling up even one local game.

Yet another nail in the PS3’s coffin 🙁

PS3’s coffin? You must be joking.

The SA PS3 community is doing quite well actually and the guys i play online with have no problem filling multiple COD4 matches.

I just wish all these online MP games handled things like WarHawk, international games 24 hours a day on over 100 servers with no lag. I don’t know how they did it but some of these other devs need to copy them.

So another tie, give or take.

I think the fanbois really need to agree that the machines are pretty much the same in terms of power. Paying that premium is PURELY for the Blu-Ray player.

The PS3 fanbois are still waiting for that game that looks 10 times better than it’s 360 counterpart and that’ll only happen if the devs intentionally phuck up the the port.

I agree with Banana on the 12 – 14 makes no difference.

Anyhoo… Games like Rainbow Six are developed on a PC/360 architecture, and so the release on the PS3 SHOULD be technically inferior IF the Developers don’t put enough effort in to make use of the PS3 vastly different architecture.

Wait until the end of the year, when more developers have been persuaded to use the PS3 as their base development enviroment.
    Things will be vastly different.

Why should they move to the PS3 enviroment you ask?

Cos of MGS4, GT5 and Little Big Planet. They will push PS3 sales through the roof.

The question is then whether or not the Blu-Ray is worth the premium…. which can only be answered by the person who is about to buy it

Blue-Ray will be worth the premium when you can walk into your local rental store and pick up the latest movies (and all the classics) readily avaiable and your standard rental price of R25. (i can see these stores keeping DVD at R25 and BR for R35… or something equally ludicris). Naturally Rondebosch Video will have pirate BR discs for R10. 🙂

Having an awesome HD player (and yes, HD movies are soooo worth it, see, i can say Pro PS3 stuffses) is pretty pointless when the only HD movies you get are a small selection at your local musica selling for R250 PER MOVIE. The format needs to gather some momentum, in SA too.

@Milesh, the video store by me has latest releases on BD for R27. Not a big selection but it’s getting there. They also rent PS3 games for R20 a day!

It’s great stuff and will only get better!

    Are we arguing stupid again?

“If you have both consoles then they suggest getting the 360 version but if you only have a PS3 you really are not losing out in any way…”

There Lazy summarized it for everyone. No one’s losing anything.

Is BD support worth if for a R4000 difference? (arcade versus 40Gb+remote to be an actual “player”) That’s totally up to buyer to decide, but the question come in with cheap stand alone players almost certain to come out this year.

I make no value statement here but the question is “integrated all in one” or dedicated “leading” game console + dedicated, “superior” BD player, for less than the integrated device?

You know it’s not even like that?

Darth, I’ve said it many times, I have nothing against the PS3 itself, I simply don’t like it’s content firstly or it’s executives secondly. The first is a matter of personal taste, the second they’re a bunch of snarky lying twats, that’s all 😉 I think the MGS Steel PS3 looks very nice.

As for owning a PS3 it’s purely a question of why the heck do I need one? I’m not a full time gamer, I’m struggling with keeping up with the games I’m dying to play on the 360, I rarely have a gap to trade out for some of the A list games I missed, I would have no time to play anything on the PS3 anyway. Which leaves it’s BD player, which as I’ve mentioned before has little to no value to me.

The key issue is “no games I want”. I would have said GT5, but todays GRiD trailer just nuked GT5’s a$$ into oblivion.
