ESEA opened shop in South Africa several months ago which added an extra opportunity for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive teams to compete on the global stage once more. The league, and Global Challenge, formed part of their ever popular online pug system where local teams could compete at a much higher level. ESEA in South Africa struggled in comparison to its international popularity, but slowly the system kicked off, which included Season 22 of the Global Challenge, with the preliminaries won by Bravado Gaming. Season 22 of the Global Challenge culminated this past weekend in Katowice, Poland, but Bravado Gaming were unable to attend due to VISA issues on such short notice. They instead went to the WESG Africa and Middle East Qualifiers, where they placed second.

Registrations for Season 23 are now open, but they close Monday the 5th.

Season 23, all you need to know

You can register your team on the ESEA site, and registrations will cost $9.95 (R150). This will place you and your team into a two month qualifier consisting of a best-of-one round robin. From there the top 8 teams move on to the play offs (with their qualifying seeds intact) which will be a best-of-three single elimination bracket. The playoffs will run for a month, making the entire qualifiers a rough 3-4 month process. ESEA have upped the prize pool for the Global Challenge from $130,000 to $140,000, meaning the teams who go can walk away with a decent purse, with the added benefit of travel and accommodation costs covered by ESEA.

Regions included are Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, Brazil and South Africa. Both Europe and North America will include premier teams, while the rest are open. Winning the qualifier will send you to the Mountain Dew Global Challenge LAN in December, with the venue yet to be announced. Hopefully this time around South Africa will have a presence, with the previous VISA issues sorted out.

The entirety of the ESEA qualification process was covered by nAvTV in Season 22, and we can look forward once again to their coverage of Season 23. South Africa’s presence on the global stage is slowly rising, and teams are slowly but surely preparing to take on the bigger European and North American sides. Here’s hoping the ESEA Season 23 readies the local teams for a fantastic end to one of the most exciting competitive years in CS:GO history.
