Rejoice! The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will use a new engine

Literally ten minutes before I found this information, I was moaning in the comments section of Nick’s news piece on Skyrim’s announcement. Clearly my Google-fu is a little slow this morning. I’m not sure which I’m more excited about: the fact that we’re getting a new Elder Scrolls game, or the fact that it’s built on a brand new graphics engine.

Picked up by eagle-eyed Twitter followers, Bethesda fired this scrap of information onto the Internet a few hours after the game was officially revealed. That scrap, however, is probably the best news about the game so far.

There’s no name for the new engine but according to Bethesda “it’s spectacular”. Awesome; I’ll take two of them.

Many (me included) have been a little underwhelmed by how the Gamebryo engine (used for Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout: NV) has fared over the years. Fallout: New Vegas was the last game to use it and it has definitely started showing its age. No need to stress about Skyrim now though. Instead you can start stressing about whether or not your PC will run the game when it comes out. Time to get rid of the old 8800GTX I think.
